#1 – Johnny Lingo

I’m pretty sure this is the most well known on my list. This romantic short film produced in 1969 is sure to make you swoon. The plot includes a wealthy, handsome man named Johnny Lingo. He comes to an island looking for a wife. The islanders are confused when Lingo decides to marry the “ugliest” woman in town, Mahana. Why did he choose her? What happens next? You’ll have to watch to find out!

This story teaches lessons of self-worth, kindness, and believing in yourself. I also think it teaches men how to treat their woman like a queen. It’s a lovely story that I can’t wait to show my future kids.

#2 – The Phone Call

Another classic. If you feel the need to relive your awkward teenage dating stories, this is the one for you. This film is about a young man named Scott who is struggling with his confidence to ask his crush, Pam, on a date. There are some amazing one-liners in this old church video that you’ll find yourself quoting on a regular basis.

The Phone Call gives me major Napoleon Dynamite vibes and I can’t get enough. You’re going to love this one!

#3 – For a Wise Purpose

This is the seminary class we all secretly wished for. Magic portals? A giant copy of The Book of Mormon? Sign me up. I don’t know why the Church stopped making videos like this. They’re golden.

If you’re struggling to grasp all the nitty-gritty details about the gold plates and structure of The Book of Mormon, this video is perfect for you. I love the visuals and creative ideas!

#4 – Pride

Living the commandments can be difficult at times. Don’t you wish there was a way to practice? Well, this video allows one family to practice identifying pride in a simulation exercise! These futuristic vibes definitely make me laugh. At the same time, I learned a lot about how pride has different appearances.

This would be a fun video for a family home evening about the sin of pride. You could try thinking about situations you might have been in before that are similar to the ones in this short film!

#5 – Act For Themselves

I saved the best for last. Act For Themselves is my personal favorite of the old church videos. It makes my stomach hurt with laughter. However, it teaches a very important lesson of why we have commandments and how to use our agency.

A young man’s alter ego shows up to teach himself a lesson about freedom and the power to choose. The facial expressions and music are truly amazing, but the lessons are even better. This film makes agency so much easier to understand!
