On October 22, LDS.org published a series on “Plural Marriage in Kirtland and Nauvoo” on their gospel topics page. The essays quickly spread online and became a common topic of discussion amongst members of the Church.

Yesterday, mainstream media outlets covered the essays including CNN, and The New York Times. Headlines promoted that, The LDS Church had admitted that their founder had wed up to 40 wives.

In response to the mass coverage of the Gospel Topics series on polygamy, Mormon Newsroom released a statement titled “Church Provides Context for Recent Media Coverage on Gospel Topics Page.”

The press release explains that the Gospel Topics page serves as a resource for members of the Church to study a variety of important LDS topics surrounding the history and doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Additionally, the plural marriage series was added as a way to compile all of the previously known information on the subject into one location for members to study.

The release also said,

As a Church, it’s important for us to research and provide official, reputable, historically accurate information about our history and doctrine.
