11-Year-Old Girl Becomes Football Phenomenon

1955

Samantha (Sam) Gordon, has taken to out-running the boys on the football field again. After taking a year off to focus on soccer, the 11-year-old female athlete returned to the football field to score some touchdowns. Gordon, the smallest player in her league, posted a video of her 2014 Season Highlights to her YouTube channel on November 18, 2014.

Gordon first got started in football by running drills on the sidelines of her brother’s practices. When the coach invited her to join the team on the field for the drills, she decided that maybe she’d want to start playing football.

The young football sensation, who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, first became an internet sensation in 2012 when she shared her story of meeting a former Brigham Young football player on the Cougarboard. Along with this story, Gordon posted a link to a video of her football highlights.

Forget overnight success, within just three hours The Ellen Degeneres Show had called the Gordons in hopes of having the then 9-year-old sensation on the show. LDS Living reports that the next day, Good Morning America was on the Gordons’ doorstep, camera crew and all.

Since her rise to fame in 2012, Gordon has not only appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show and on Good Morning America, but the Mayor of South Jordan has named a day after her, she’s been honored at a Utah Jazz basketball game, interviewed on the Conan Show,  and she has become the first female football player to have her picture on a Wheaties Cereal box.
