On November 14th, the BYU Management Society gave its Pioneer in Leadership Award to veteran baseball player Dale Murphy.

For more than two decades, Dale Murphy excelled as a professional baseball player, driving in almost 1,200 runs and hitting almost 400 homers, a record that the Church News says “terrorized” pitchers. Twice he was named the National League’s Most Valuable Player.

It was off the field, however, that Dale Murphy gained a reputation for his clean, religious lifestyle and love of family. His charity work led him to sharing the 1987 title of Sportsmen and Sportswomen of the year from Sports Illustrated with seven other athletes.

At the awards ceremony at BYU, Murphy said that humility goes hand-in-hand with service, and that his most humbling moments were not on the field but while serving as president of the Boston Massachusetts Mission from 1997 to 2000.
