Two football players from Brigham Young University have received a very special preseason honor. Taysom Hill, quarterback, and Jamaal Williams, running back, have both been added to the watch list for the 78th Annual Maxwell Award. The award is given to the College Player of the Year, recognizing him as the nation’s most outstanding college football player.
KSL reports that Hill will enter his junior season as “BYU’s all-time leader in QB rushing yards, with 1,680.” In addition, the only person to top his 14 career rushing touchdowns, was quarterback Steve Young, who had 18.
In 2013, Williams had a total of 1,233 rush yards, which ranks as the fifth highest single-season rush yards at BYU, according to KSL. Entering his junior season at BYU, Williams is only 1,448 rushing yards away from breaking the current BYU record.
BYU has only had one athlete to ever actually receive the Maxwell Award. In 1990, quarterback Ty Detmer was acknowledged by the Maxwell Football Club as the nation’s most outstanding college football player.
