Australian Broadway star, Graeme Purcell, claims that his performing career has helped enrich his faith in the Latter-day Saint religion.

The returned missionary is an actor in “The Lion King” musical touring Australia, in which he performs as part of the male ensemble and plays the role of Simba’s understudy. Purcell explains his role in the musical, saying,

We sing all the company songs, like ‘Circle of Life,’ ‘Hakuna Matata’ and when Simba is sick or on leave, I go on as the main role.

Purcell spends most of his time rehearsing and preparing for the shows. MissionGeek.net reports that Purcell performs eight shows over the course of five days each week. Despite having such a demanding career, which causes Purcell to miss YSA activities, firesides and even some Sunday meetings, Purcell still fiinds ways to stay strong in his faith.

In addition to keeping a picture of the First Presidency in his dressing room, Purcell explains that he also tries to attend lunchtime institute and teach with the missionaries multiple times each week.

Even though his professional acting career may prevent him from participating in activities that many other young adults are enjoying, Purcell says he loves it and that performing in “The Lion King” even helps him live his faith. He says that the musical reminds him of the Plan of Salvation and that it can help people find God.
