Kimy Aguirre, a mother of five and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, didn’t just want to eat healthier: She wanted to create something that could truly “nourish and strengthen the body,” as the classic phrase in many prayers about snacks at Church events goes.

And she did it with a donut.

During the pandemic, Kimy stopped eating sugar, bread, and dairy products. Within a few days, however, she felt the craving for something sweet.

Disillusioned with the “healthy” options on the market, she used what she had at home—sweet potato, oats, egg whites, and a natural, calorie-free sweetener—so she started experimenting. The result was a soft, sweet donut made with only natural ingredients.

This is how Doatnut was born, a gluten-free, dairy-free, and sugar-free donut with just 90 calories and 1 gram of sugar.

What started as a personal recipe quickly grew in popularity, especially among people with dietary restrictions or simply seeking a better relationship with food, so Kimy opened a shop in Oceanside, California, and started dreaming big.

Kimy applied to the popular TV show, where thousands compete for investment from entrepreneurs like Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner. Although they don’t usually accept products that already have a physical store, she was selected to appear on Season 16, Episode 3.

I was told from the beginning that I was a wild card. They don’t usually put on products that already have a storefront, but they all loved my product. That was the best part.

During the episode, Mark Cuban and Lori Greiner, investors in the show, offered him a joint deal: $200,000 for 30% of their company.

Kimy accepted without hesitation, and now works with them to take Donut nationwide and launch a subscription system so anyone can get these healthy donuts delivered to their home.

But behind all her business success is a woman deeply committed to her family and her faith. Kimy gets up at 2 a.m. to set up the store so she can return home in time to have breakfast with her children and take them to school.

“It’s important for them to see me chase my dreams because I want them to feel like they can do that,” she said. “But when we are together having family dinner or on Sundays, I want to be present. It’s not always perfect, but that is the goal.”

In a world where sweets are often fraught with guilt, Kimy Aguirre offers a purposeful alternative: a product that reflects hard work, health, and faith. And now, thanks to Shark Tank, her dream is poised to conquer many more tables—with or without a prayer before snacking.
