Open House Announced For Historic Salt Lake City Temple
The Salt Lake Temple, a witness to generations of faith and sacrifice, is preparing to reopen its doors after a major renovation.
President Russell M. Nelson announced today, February 14, 2025, that the historic and iconic Salt Lake Temple, under restoration since 2019, will once again be accessible to the public with an open house from April through October 2027.
“Today, exactly 172 years after the groundbreaking ceremony, I am delighted to announce that the temple will reopen for tours during a public open house from April through October 2027,” President Nelson said.
This news marks a historic moment for Latter-day Saints and all those who desire to know the peace and purpose of a temple of the Lord.
A legacy of sacrifice and faith
On February 14, 1853, Latter-day Saint pioneers, under the direction of the prophet Brigham Young, laid the cornerstone of the Salt Lake Temple.
What followed was a four-decade journey of hard work, challenges, and unwavering faith. Year after year, generation after generation, the builders persevered until finally, on April 6, 1893, the temple was joyfully and reverently dedicated.
Today, more than 130 years after that historic dedication, the temple is in the final stages of its renovation.
“A current and complete renovation to strengthen this sacred house of the Lord for future generations is nearing completion ,” the prophet explains.
This process has not only ensured the structural integrity of the building, but has reaffirmed its eternal purpose: to be a place where God’s children can draw near to Him, make sacred covenants, and receive His guidance.
A sacred invitation to the world
During the open house, everyone—regardless of religion or belief—will have the opportunity to tour the temple and learn more about its meaning and divine purpose.
We warmly invite our friends to come and learn about God’s plan for His children and to rejoice in the love of Jesus Christ.
It will be a time to contemplate the beauty of this sacred building, but above all, to feel the spirit of peace and revelation that emanates from the temples of the Lord.
Specific details of this event will be shared as we get closer to April 2027, but as of now, the invitation is open to all who wish to experience this unique event.
The nearest temple: a refuge in the present
As we gratefully await the reopening of the Salt Lake Temple, President Nelson reminds us that temples already dot the earth, providing sacred opportunities to draw closer to God in the present.
As the houses of the Lord now dot the earth, I invite you to appreciate your time and service in the temples nearest you as we prepare for the reopening of the Salt Lake Temple in 2027.
This announcement is not just about a building opening, but about the very purpose of temples in our lives. It is a call to prepare ourselves spiritually, to strengthen our faith, and to make the temple a priority in our journey of discipleship.
The wait will be short compared to eternity. When the Salt Lake Temple reopens in 2027, it will be more than a reopening—it will be a testimony to God’s faithfulness, the devotion of His people, and the eternal blessings that await us in His holy house.
