President Dieter F. Uchtdorf dedicated the Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Temple on Sunday, May 4, 2014. Now, just over a week later, Church News has posted the transcript from the dedicatory prayer.
During the dedication President Uchtdorf very clearly stated what members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe this new temple will accomplish:
Thou hast sent Thy prophet Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children and the hearts of the children to their fathers. This holy temple opens the gates to eternity that these purposes may be fulfilled.
President Uchtdorf was referring to the biblical prophesy in the Book of Malachi. Mormons believe that Elijah has returned and that the work performed in the temple ensures the salvation of themselves and the entire human family. (thus turning the fathers to the children and vice versa)
