Leaders for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined together with the community in Lisbon on Friday to break ground for Portugal’s first temple.

Elder Patrick Kearon, President of the Church’s Europe area, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. Of the temple, Kearon said,

The temple will be a bright symbol of our faith, our gratitude to our loving Father in Heaven and His son Jesus Christ. We pray for those who will be involved in building this sacred place, and know that it will be a blessing to the people of Portugal.

Mormon Newsroom reports that the temple’s interior will feature Portugal landscape inspired artwork. The Church will announce open house and dedication dates as the construction of the temple nears completion.
