Colby Ferrin, a recently returned missionary who served in Mexico City, compiled a rap video featuring a before and after perspective of his mission.

Ferrin wrote on his Youtube page about his mission,

My experience as a missionary was the best of my life and changed me forever, but now I’m excited to get into college life and especially to get back to making music.

Here are lyrics to Ferrin’s rap:

BEFORE THE MISSION

Man, it’s crazy

I’ve been waiting my whole life for this moment and it’s here

I take a look at my childhood and wonder where it went

I’m on the front lines of this younger aged experiment

I still remember when I entered with the letter from the Church of Jesus Christ

Which stated where He wants this Elder sent, it said,

“Elder, you’re called to serve, go share the joy that you have that we all deserve,

You’ll leave your home and pack your bags,

And say your “goodbyes” to Mom and Dad

Because it’s time to teach the Plan until they all have heard

‘Til they have joy and they know why

Until they have joy because they know Christ

And I’m preparing and I’m counting down the days until I’m leaving

Man, it’s crazy how quickly that time can go by

I’m saying goodbyes to my close friends

When we next meet I don’t know when

I’ve been living with guidance holding onto my parents like a rope

But it’s looking like this is where the rope ends, from here it’s

“Do good, That’s all. We knew that you would, stand tall.”

I’ve had my hands around my family

But I’m leaving so now I feel the pain of being alone as my hands fall

I won’t get paid, but it’s the toughest job

Man, I can’t wait to share my love of God

I’ll be bold with my song to the top of the hills sing

And hold to the rod so I don’t drop with the building

Not even going to sit down til every person in my sight has heard that

He lives now and is still King

There’s a big “how?” but I’m gonna witness even if my bones are ripped out,

If it kills me

Sends me now, with cheer I go,

In Christ there’s no fear I know

Goodbye to the 18 years I’ve known, watch out world here I go

I said, “Send me now, with cheer I go, in Christ there’s no fear I know.”

Goodbye to the 18 years I’ve known, watch out world here I go

I believe and I will defeat

For the people with me, I’ll get on my feet

I believe and I will defeat

For the people with me, I’ll get on my feet

AFTER THE MISSION

It’s been 2 years, it’s been 2 years

I taught a few people and conquered a few fears

And I’ve seen miracles, yes I’ve seen miracles, oh I’ve seen miracles,

But man, have you ever been hated or discriminated against?

Preached love and peace and received pain and offense?

Have you ever looked at the sky like, “it’s raining again?”

But you walk those miles because they need the Savior amen.

You see, I gave up sleep so they could have rest

Shed tears so they could cry less

My family gave up 2 years of being together

So that other families could be joined together forever

And for He that paid the ransom, I gave up first-world life

To help others find their heavenly mansion

And though we taught what Christ said we should and should not be

So some people simply could not or would not see

They didn’t get why salvation is a big deal at all

Or how Christ saves us from an actual fall

They don’t see we’re divine beings

We’re more than just monkeys that were made from a bomb

But, on occasions there was an amazing person who was searching for the voice we were raising

And they made our trials seem like minor pains

When compared to our smiles, lifes were changed

LIFE AFTER THE MISSION

Wow, now it’s over,

Although when I think about it, it isn’t over

This is just the start and this part is better

Now my name tag’s written on my heart forever

So here I pledge to light a spark in this people

To raise a loud voice against darkness and evil

And to shine a light glowing with the splendor of youth

As a soldier of Christ, a defender of truth

So send me now, with cheer I go, in Christ there’s no fear I know

Goodbye to the best 2 years I’ve known, watch out world here I go

So send me now, with cheer I go, in Christ there’s no fear I know

Goodbye to the best 2 years I’ve known, watch out world here I go

Now I know, the painful road

I’ve learned the love when life get’s tough

I believe and now I know and I will defeat the painful road

For the people with me I’ve learned the love,

I’ll get on my knees when life gets tough

There it is, its a mission for ya
