How Are We the “True Church”?

Elder Holland came down from the stands, pacing back and forth. He asked this group of church leaders what it means when we say, “we are the true church.” We are not the only church with true scripture. We are not the only church to teach truth. We are not the only church with good people. We are not the only church with spiritual gifts.

President Eyring has said, “This is the true Church, the only true Church, because in it are the keys of the priesthood. Only in this Church has the Lord lodged the power to seal on earth and to seal in heaven as He did in the time of the Apostle Peter. Those keys were restored to Joseph Smith, who then was authorized to confer them upon the members of the Quorum of the Twelve.”

Because of these priesthood keys, the temple is authorized. Temple sealings and marriages are authorized. That is what sets The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints apart from all other churches.

Are we the true church? And what does that even mean? If we see Godโ€™s guidance, blessings, and miracles in other churches as well as our own, what are we to make of that? As weโ€™ve explored other churches that stemmed from Joseph Smith, these and similar questions have been asked by listeners. With guest Christopher Blythe, of the Angels and Seerstones podcast, Scott and Casey explore such questions in our latest episode, โ€œWhy Does God Guide Those Not of His Church?” (w /Dr. Christopher Blythe).
