In the context of Latter-day Saint temples, the phrase “be one” embodies the principle of spiritual unity. It calls for believers to unite with God, with one another, and with their eternal families. The temple is viewed as a sacred space where individuals make covenants that deepen their relationship with God. Through these covenants, members strive to live in harmony and foster a community that reflects the love and unity Christ prayed for in the New Testament: “that they may be one, even as we are one” (John 17:11).

The phrase also highlights the eternal nature of familial bonds. In the temple, Latter-day Saints participate in ordinances such as eternal marriages and sealings that unite families not just for this life, but for eternity. “Be one” extends to the family unit, reinforcing the idea that families can remain united in God’s presence forever. This eternal perspective brings a profound sense of purpose and togetherness to temple worship.

Additionally, “be one” reflects the broader unity of the Church. Through the ordinances performed in the temple—such as baptisms for the dead, endowments, and sealings—Latter-day Saints connect with both the living and the deceased in a shared mission to bring all of God’s children together in Christ. This vicarious work for the dead underscores the belief that spiritual unity transcends time and death, uniting the living with those who have passed in the service of God’s eternal plan. In this way, the temple is a place where all are invited to “be one,” creating unity not just among members of the Church, but with all of God’s children throughout the ages.
