“The Wise Men’s gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the Christ child were not only treasures fit for a king, but also profound symbols of Jesus’ divine mission. Gold represents kingship. In ancient times, kings were adorned with gold and it symbolized their power, wealth, and authority. By offering gold, the wise men acknowledged Jesus as the King of Kings, the Ruler of all creation who would reign in perfect righteousness.

Frankincense was used in sacred temple rituals symbolizing worship and the prayers of the faithful rising to God. This gift reflected Christ’s role as the high priest who would intercede on behalf of all humanity. Through His perfect love and sacrifice, He would bridge the gap between heaven and earth, reconciling us with God.

Myrrh, used for embalming and anointing, carried a sobering message. It foreshadowed Christ’s sacrificial death and the Atonement he would perform for all mankind, but myrrh also reminds us of the hope of resurrection for through His death, Christ conquered the grave.

Each gift points to Christ’s divine roles; the King who reigns the High Priest who redeems, and the Savior who ultimately overcomes death.”
