  1. Gramps’ answer could stand some clarification. Scripturally, the thousand years would only be applied to those who are ultimately reaurrected to a Telestial glory—unrepentant liars, adulterers, murderers, and the other ne’er-do-wells described in D&C 76.

  2. Other have answered the OP with greater knowledge and understanding than I would, but I'd like to address this question, because we (and Christians of all denominations) hear it a LOT when confronted with doctrines that require a certain standard within Christianity. The answer is simple. Because without the Gospel there is no universal definition of a "good person." Take 10 different people and ask them to define a good person. You'll get 10 different answers. Sure, there are some universal elements like "A good person doesn't kill, steal or rape." Okay, not much meat there. Let's talk about the variances. When would a good person find it acceptable to lie? When would a good person find it acceptable to sleep with someone? How much money does a good person donate to charity? Under what conditions would a good person be justified in killing? Does a good person get an abortion? What political issues does a good person support? Who should a good person vote for? Ask 10 different people that set of questions and you'll get 10 different answers I guarantee it. And once you have those 10 answers, who gets to judge which among them goes where in the afterlife? And once you've decided that, ask yourself what makes your perspective wise enough to make that call? And, if you're a wise enough person to realize that it takes godlike wisdom to judge, then you know we have to leave it to God to do just that. He's given us the standard.

  3. Amen Unix! I caught this bug around my early-mid 40's too. Now I'm 5-6 years into it, and have many successes to show. - At my best, I was 30+ lbs under my all-time high. (Right now I'm 15-20 under.) - My 3-digit weight had a "2" in it for the first time since high school. For almost a year. (It's back to a "3" now, hence all the effort I'm putting into this thread.) - For the first time in my 4+ decades, I am doing real pushups, not just from the knees. (I even can stick my legs on a bench, and push up from the floor, though not much.) - Many benefits of pushups, but probably the most rewarding is that when I'm eating right, my chest sticks out more than my belly. (Without me puffing the top one out and sucking the bottom one in. That's lying!) That hasn't been a thing since 1986. - My original motivation back 5-6 years ago: I had joined my work's medical response team - and as we went to our first real call, all the timid people were letting me lead the way, and I was out of breath and slow just walking across the building. I figured never again. Now I can do a cross-building speed walk justice. Effort brings consistency and habits. Those lead to a changed lifestyle and reaching those life goals. You can get yourself into skydiving shape and rock that indy car. All it takes is a short period of time of painful effort, and then a long period of time of refusing to let go of your better lifestyle. You got this!

  4. Good news: I got in an extra workout before curling by pebbling 4/5 sheets, which was basically walking along the entire practice hockey arena with a tub of hot water strapped to my back while waving a metal spraying rod back and forth the whole time. Bad news: it was my first time, so I was sloppy and got my shirt so soaked that it was still wet two hours later. Also, my entire right arm is sore. Good news: I got a bit of exercise when I shoveled the driveway before work this morning. Bad news: I don't think it helped the arm any (although sleeping on it during an after work nap probably did more damage) and it kept snowing, effectively making my work ineffective. Good news: I have consumed way fewer calories than normal this weekend. Bad news: it's mostly because there is a nuclear attack on my sinuses that hit me Fiday morning. My eye has leaked at least five times and I've gone through a quarter box of Puffs already today.

  5. Dreaded weekend is here. Here are the lies spawned from lucifer's bloated belly: "I'm all driving around after helping someone move, and might as well do taco bell because it'll be too late for lunch when I get back, and the good people say it's important to not skip meals." "I only lost one lb yesterday, it's not worth it, I've spent my whole life around this weight and it ain't like I'm having health problems or anything." So I had lunch early, and I'll bring carrots to the move with me. And checking in here to get dat good ol' peer pressure motivation going. I am not gonna blow my diet today when I'm driving around, nor when I get home.

  8. My official weigh in is today. I'm down 6.6# this first week--yippee! My goal is to be down 23# by March 15--totally doable. And I ran after the kiddos today in nursery, so got in some exercise too.

  9. Are we still food logging? This thing needs to work. I have a bunch of things I've been putting off for years because of my girth. I want to skydive, I want to ski and I'm a big fan of IndyCar and Formula 1 racing... there's a track not far form here where you can actually drive an open wheeled race car around the track... but you have to be able to fit safely in the car... I'm 44. Young enough that I can still do these things safely, but old enough that the clock is ticking. And while my doctor tells me all my blood work is good, that ain't gonna last forever unless I get fit. It's a miracle I'm not diabetic.

  10. Well, this week I went out once to Taco Bell, and a second time I took my wife out to a lunch date at a steak house... Then last night also went on a Dinner Date with my wife to a Diner, had chicken fried steak. Ate a little better though, slowly. Had some meals brought from home for lunch this week. I felt hungry many times in the afternoon. Haven't lost much weight yet...people in this thread seem to lose weight quickly. I'm no match for them. I DID buy a scale for my home, I suppose that's an improvement. I still have to take it out of the box. I think I'll put it in the bathroom as that seems to be a popular place for them.

  11. Awesome. Yes the point is to be working hard enough that you do more than your body is accustomed to so that it adapts. From the strengthening and endurance side of things that is lifting heavier loads and doing more repetitions, from the cardiorespiratory fitness side of things that is creating a need for increased oxygen delivery requiring increased blood distribution which is accomplished in the short term by increasing heart rate to keep up demand, but in the long term adaptations take place where all throughout the circulatory system your body gets better at handing off oxygen where it's needed and the heart adapts by being able to pump more blood per stroke so the heart rate doesn't have to increase as much at the same workload. It sounds like you worked at a sufficient level to elicit adaptations in all of these areas which is wonderful. Now you'll have to let us know if you experience any residual soreness in the next few days. A little is good, and I'm strange enough to kind of like it, but too much is just unpleasant and likely means one has overdone it. I suspect in a short but intense 15 minutes you may have a little soreness, but hopefully nothing crazy.

  12. Good job on being prepared, NT! Weekends are always the most difficult. Stay focused on WHY you want to be healthy. I'm fighting my snacking monster today. I want a big ol' bucket of buttered popcorn, but I'm kinda stuck inside (we got a bunch of snow dumped on us and staying off the roads is a good idea). But being stuck is good as we don't have popcorn in the house. I will splurge a bit and have a diet soda (in addition to my water intake). Stay strong!

  14. Everyone loses weight at different rates so don't get hung up on that. A lot of the time it's due to water retention, bloating, inconsistent bowel elimination - especially when the weight fluctuates often and quickly. Try not to feel like you are being left behind if others appear to be making faster progress. Consider when Roger Banister did "the impossible" and ran a mile under four minutes, the record only lasted a couple months, because suddenly the impossible was possible. So while he ran that distance faster than ever recorded before, instead of getting discouraged, other athletes took that as their cue that they could do it too. Try to think of it in the latter frame of mind. If others can do it, you can do it too. I'm glad to hear that you are eating a little better, how did you feel about the week?

  15. This is what the Doctrine and Covenants Section 76 says will be the fate of those good people from other religions: 71 And again, we saw the terrestrial world, and behold and lo, these are they who are of the terrestrial, whose glory differs from that of the church of the Firstborn who have received the fulness of the Father, even as that of the moon differs from the sun in the firmament. 72 Behold, these are they who died without law; 73 And also they who are the spirits of men kept in prison, whom the Son visited, and preached the gospel unto them, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh; 74 Who received not the testimony of Jesus in the flesh, but afterwards received it. 75 These are they who are honorable men of the earth, who were blinded by the craftiness of men. 76 These are they who receive of his glory, but not of his fulness. 98 And the glory of the telestial is one, even as the glory of the stars is one; for as one star differs from another star in glory, even so differs one from another in glory in the telestial world; 99 For these are they who are of Paul, and of Apollos, and of Cephas. 100 These are they who say they are some of one and some of another—some of Christ and some of John, and some of Moses, and some of Elias, and some of Esaias, and some of Isaiah, and some of Enoch; 101 But received not the gospel, neither the testimony of Jesus, neither the prophets, neither the everlasting covenant. It seems to me, from the above, that good people from other religions, if they continue to adhere to that other religion in the spirit world, and turn down the offers of accepting the gospel and the proxy work that has been done for them in the temple end up in the telestial kingdom. In speaking of the conditions of the telestial kingdom, Doctrine and Covenants 76:89 says 89 And thus we saw, in the heavenly vision, the glory of the telestial, which surpasses all understanding; So it doesn't look like such a bad place to be, its just not as good as where we could be

Me: Last week's cheat day had me up 3, the weigh-ins have been 3, high 2, and low 2 this morning. Must continue to not screw up today, and then get back in the routine groove on Monday. On track for a cheat day next week. Gotta hit up 1, then up 0, then down 1 for my cheat day.

Indeed... As a point of clarification though. If the church itself quotes Handbook 1 (say in a press release) you can post a link to the official church page that does so... You just can not reproduce the quote here. Basically the for us the Church controls all expressions of Handbook 1... This is true of any restricted church content. Say for example the temple ceremonies. If the church were to publish them we would allow links to the official publication but we do not allow reproduction of any part of them here.

It took about 15 minutes to do the four exercises, 15 reps each (except the reverse lunge, which I did 16 times, otherwise one leg would have to do more than the other, and that's hardly fair), 3 times. It left me breathing hard and straining ye olde muscles by the end of each round - I'm assuming that's the goal. I'm actually looking forward to making this a habit and seeing improvement. (It's kinda shocking how quickly the muscles atrophy without you noticing it until you need to do something that used to be easy years ago.)

  22. I agree with many of e-eye's points. I would include a couple of additional ones to the list: -Word of Wisdom clarifications -more leadership opportunities for women in the different areas of the church The reason I think that there might be some updates to the way that the Word of Wisdom is defined is that it was never originally intended to be elevated to 'commandment' level, and wasn't lived as such until the early-mid 20th century. Also, there is too much loose interpretation on what an appropriate vs. inappropriate 'hot drink' means. Around the world, a lot of different hot drinks besides coffee and tea are consumed (kava, matte, etc) and they aren't expressly forbidden by the church. However, often members in those parts of the world use that as a way of defining a more robust level of faithfulness (those who don't drink kava vs. those who do), and it causes a lot of judgment, misconceptions, etc. After all, we have other prophetic counsel (staying out of debt, food storage, etc), that aren't given the same 'commandment/temple recommend question' status. I can just see that the modern day interpretation of the Word of Wisdom is steeped in a lot of the 'Utah' church tradition and not really in what it was originally intended to be. Anyway, my prediction is that in the globalization and de-centralization of the church that is happening now under President Nelson's leadership, I can see this Word of Wisdom clarification/update as being one of the changes. My two cents...

  23. No, it isn't moot, of course, it was an evil spirit. To be held down, not allowed to move freely sure as the dickens wouldn't be caused by an angel of the Lord or one of His messengers! During the last 5 years of my abusive marriage AND before I re-activated back into the LDS Church, I would have night terrors where demon arms would come up through the mattress trying to pull me down through the mattress, the floor and where ever they were coming from. I went to the Dr (who is LDS & also was the Branch President) to get meds to help me not have these terrors. I also told him that I had marks on my body from their claws/talons extremely long nails. Since I had no fingernails (chewed them down to the nubs) and these marks were impossible for me to have done it - he believed me. He also sent two High Priests over to give me a blessing and to bless the house. They encouraged me to pray at bedtime and to ask Father to banish the adversary from me and the house.

  24. Then it's a moot question to ask if it was evil spirit or sleep paralysis until it happens to you again. When it does happen to you again, try my suggestions. Then it will be clearer.

  25. NONE. The Great Apostasy is a matter of faith in the same manner that the Restoration of the Authority on Joseph Smith is a matter of faith. No evidence is sufficient to prove that the Apostolic Authority of Peter, who is considered the first bishop of Rome, did not get passed to Bishop Linus, the next Bishop of Rome (the 2nd Catholic Pope after Peter). Just as there is no evidence sufficient to prove that the Apostolic Authority of Peter was passed to Joseph Smith. All this is a matter of faith. Any attempt at evidence-pointing beyond that is simply... Catholic-bashing. The Catholics have a ~2,000 year history. It has survived for that long. The LDS Church has a ~200 year history. Anti-Mormons have plenty of LDS history material to bash LDS with in just 200 years worth of cultural history, the majority of which is anchored in the USA. You will have to multiply that by 10, and add the stage of the formation of the entire European continent and the drastic changes in prevalent culture for 20 centuries to match the resources anti-Catholics can use against the Catholics. This is what I always tell everybody - you can't convince people of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and the authority of the LDS Church by showing how the other Christians are wrong. This is the way of the Atheist which is fruitless. The only way you can convince people of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and the authority of the LDS Church is by showing how the Book of Mormon and the LDS Church is true on its own merit. I know this sounds like I'm raining on your parade. This is not my intent. I'm simply stating my opinion as a faithful LDS converted from Catholicism.

  26. While food journaling can be useful for some people long term, especially those who find an app they enjoy using to help with it, I usually just use it for a few days at a time as an information gathering tool to see what areas of improvement will yield the biggest results in the least amount of effort. There are certainly different options, but one thing that is unavoidable is that you do need to make adjustments to what you're doing currently. You can't expect different results from doing the same things. Rather than keeping a log you might do better using a meal reference sheet. This could be something you simply keep in your pocket or on your phone that has a list of things your meal should include. If you read through this article https://www.precisionnutrition.com/fix-a-broken-diet and find the starting point portion recommendations for your body type and have them all listed on a card, then all you have to do is make sure your meals match the outline. Where is the protein coming from? how much? Where are the vegetables? Healthy fats? Work to make your meals match what is on your card (or phone reminder) and you'll be making great progress. If your meals match the guidelines over 90% of the time you'll be well on your way to success.
