  1. General Conference music April 2020 Well my friends, for a long time I have been sharing what I know about the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square (TCATS) music for General Conference. This April things are different. First, TCATS will be performing both sessions of Saturday and both sessions of Sunday conference. We haven't done that in a good long time. Although I believe there is a good chance that this music may come pre-recorded, and not live. Second, when the list of music for Conference was published, for the first time the list was accompanied with a request that we keep the list confidential, and not share it. And when I saw a particular song listed for the Sunday AM conference session, well. I guess that's why. But I don't really know. I'm not sure, but I don't think we have sung that song in GC since 1893. hmmmm... I debated for a week or so whether I could in good conscience share only the rest hymns, and honestly I don't see how that could possibly be a problem, but I have decided not to share anything. Sorry! Carry on, and try not to miss Sunday morning conference. BTW, the next 3 weeks of 'Music and the Spoken Word' will be pre-recorded.

  3. This post may or may not have something related to my previously posted comment earlier today. The SLC Church leadership are spoiled. Until just recently, if they wanted to go to the temple, it was just a phone call, electric cart ride and 10 minutes away. Now, they've got to run up to Bountiful or down to Jordan River (or maybe Draper) and it takes literally hours to do, beginning to end. So I think in General Conference, on Sunday AM, they will dedicate a portion of the Conference Center as a temple. Probably the 'little theatre'. You're welcome. 🙂

    Mosiah 4:7

Adam can and does have multiple meanings. He is the first man born into a world. 1 Cor 15:45 Is it possible that some of the members of our pre-mortal existence went to another ‘Earth’ with it’s own Adam? Yup. I do think that everyone that falls under the umbrella of Jesus Christ’s atonement had the opportunity to sustain him during the pre-mortal existence.

  5. This is one aspect that I loved about BYU and how some professors would intertwine gospel truths within their discourse/lesson material. This teacher wasn't taking time to relate gospel truths. Something I have loved about the Book of Mormon is the symbolism of Nephi building a boat after the manner the Lord showed him, not after the manner of man. We live in a day where a covenanted member is wanting to teach and have accepted relationships that are not after the manner the Lord has shown us, but after the manner of the natural man.

  6. That was common when I went as well. I remember some classes beginning with prayer, and, especially in religion but also in other courses, professors would definitely relate lessons to the gospel from time to time. That would have been 2007 to 2011 so not that long ago. I would have just walked out of this guy's class and dropped him after a stunt like this. I'd take the W on my report card if need be.

7 I say, that this is the man who receiveth salvation, through the atonement which was prepared from the foundation of the world for all mankind, which ever were since the fall of Adam, or who are, or who ever shall be, even unto the end of the world. Does this verse, by seeming to limit the effects of the atonment to those born in the time between the fall of Adam and the end of the world. in any way detract from the idea that the atonement covers all God's creations, in whatever world, and whenever they may have lived?

  8. Hi @mimi_kute, I'm an LDS Christian lady married to a generic Christian dude. We have an amazing marriage. Here's my advice: It is essential that you date/marry a guy that respects you-- which includes your morals and relationship with Christ. If he's not 100% on board with that, then he's simply not worth your time. Simple as that. My husband isn't a member, but he respects me. He waited with me. He honors my time at church, supports me when in comes to teaching our daughter about Christ. He's kind, considerate, smart, and loves all of me. Don't settle for a thing where all of you is not truly loved and supported. If this dude loves your morals and relationship with Christ, then he might indeed be a good catch. But not if he wants you to give up that huge part of yourself. As you're having such trouble in person, I would maybe suggest reaching out over online.

Well things are changing so quickly. UK government have held off shutting schools and implementing social distancing and getting lots of flack for not following most european countries. But different companies and organisations are cancelling events. I have now been personally affected as the university has been shut down and remote teaching for the next 3 weeks followed by 2 weeks of easter break. Still waiting to hear what is happening to placements, not sure many hospital wards are going to want students in the way. And UK travel to US is going to be added to the banned list from Tuesday

  10. Dear Sister, I hope that the following scriptures will be of some benefit to you. Please read and pray about them humbly and with faith, willing to submit to all things the Lord calls on you to endure, knowing that He is mindful of your thoughts and feelings and desires to bless you according to your faith and works and His love for you. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. (Old Testament | Exodus 20:14) 41 And moreover, I would desire that ye should consider on the blessed and happy state of those that keep the commandments of God. For behold, they are blessed in all things, both temporal and spiritual; and if they hold out faithful to the end they are received into heaven, that thereby they may dwell with God in a state of never-ending happiness. O remember, remember that these things are true; for the Lord God hath spoken it. (Book of Mormon | Mosiah 2:41) 8 Now, the decrees of God are unalterable; therefore, the way is prepared that whosoever will may walk therein and be saved. 9 And now behold, my son, do not risk one more offense against your God upon those points of doctrine, which ye have hitherto risked to commit sin. 10 Do not suppose, because it has been spoken concerning restoration, that ye shall be restored from sin to happiness. Behold, I say unto you, wickedness never was happiness (Book of Mormon | Alma 41:8 - 10) 25 Wherefore, thus saith the Lord, I have led this people forth out of the land of Jerusalem, by the power of mine arm, that I might raise up unto me a righteous branch from the fruit of the loins of Joseph. 26 Wherefore, I the Lord God will not suffer that this people shall do like unto them of old. 27 Wherefore, my brethren, hear me, and hearken to the word of the Lord: For there shall not any man among you have save it be one wife; and concubines he shall have none; 28 For I, the Lord God, delight in the chastity of women. And whoredoms are an abomination before me; thus saith the Lord of Hosts. 29 Wherefore, this people shall keep my commandments, saith the Lord of Hosts, or cursed be the land for their sakes. 30 For if I will, saith the Lord of Hosts, raise up seed unto me, I will command my people; otherwise they shall hearken unto these things. 31 For behold, I, the Lord, have seen the sorrow, and heard the mourning of the daughters of my people in the land of Jerusalem, yea, and in all the lands of my people, because of the wickedness and abominations of their husbands. 32 And I will not suffer, saith the Lord of Hosts, that the cries of the fair daughters of this people, which I have led out of the land of Jerusalem, shall come up unto me against the men of my people, saith the Lord of Hosts. 33 For they shall not lead away captive the daughters of my people because of their tenderness, save I shall visit them with a sore curse, even unto destruction; for they shall not commit whoredoms, like unto them of old, saith the Lord of Hosts. (Book of Mormon | Jacob 2:25 - 33) 4 Ye have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked mournfully before the LORD of hosts? 5 And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are set up; yea, they that tempt God are even delivered. 6 ¶ Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. 7 And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. (Old Testament | Malachi 3:14 - 17) 6 And now, I, Moroni, would speak somewhat concerning these things; I would show unto the world that faith is things which are hoped for and not seen; wherefore, dispute not because ye see not, for ye receive no witness until after the trial of your faith. (Book of Mormon | Ether 12:6) 15 Therefore, be ye strong from henceforth; fear not, for the kingdom is yours. 16 And for your salvation I give unto you a commandment, for I have heard your prayers, and the poor have complained before me, and the rich have I made, and all flesh is mine, and I am no respecter of persons. 17 And I have made the earth rich, and behold it is my footstool, wherefore, again I will stand upon it. 18 And I hold forth and deign to give unto you greater riches, even a land of promise, a land flowing with milk and honey, upon which there shall be no curse when the Lord cometh; 19 And I will give it unto you for the land of your inheritance, if you seek it with all your hearts. (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 38:15 - 19) 32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not…………… (New Testament | Luke 22:32) (I prayed specifically for you before posting this that you will be succored and strengthened by those in your ward and that your faith fail not) 31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. (Old Testament | Isaiah 40:31) 9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. (Old Testament | Psalms 37:9) 14 Let not your minds turn back; and when ye are worthy, in mine own due time, ye shall see and know that which was conferred upon you by the hands of my servant Joseph Smith, Jun. Amen. (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 67:14) 28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows. 32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. (New Testament | Matthew 10:28 - 32) A Prayer of the afflicted, when he is overwhelmed, and poureth out his complaint before the LORD. 1 HEAR my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee. 2 Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily. 3 For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth. 4 My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread. 5 By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin. 6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert. 7 I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top. 8 Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me. 9 For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping, 10 Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast lifted me up, and cast me down. 11 My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass. 12 But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations. 13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come. 14 For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof. 15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory. 16 When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory. 17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer. 18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD. 19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth; 20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; 21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem; 22 When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD. 23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days. (Old Testament | Psalms 102:1 - 23) 7 But ye are commanded in all things to ask of God, who giveth liberally; and that which the Spirit testifies unto you even so I would that ye should do in all holiness of heart, walking uprightly before me, considering the end of your salvation, doing all things with prayer and thanksgiving, that ye may not be seduced by evil spirits, or doctrines of devils, or the commandments of men; for some are of men, and others of devils (Doctrine and Covenants | Section 46:7) 17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him. (Old Testament | Isaiah 8:17)

  11. I would not want to argue that the following was not a revelation from God to Joseph 4 Nevertheless, I suffered it that ye might bear record; behold, there are many dangers upon the waters, and more especially hereafter; 5 For I, the Lord, have decreed in mine anger many destructions upon the waters; yea, and especially upon these waters. 6 Nevertheless, all flesh is in mine hand, and he that is faithful among you shall not perish by the waters. 14 Behold, I, the Lord, in the beginning blessed the waters; but in the last days, by the mouth of my servant John, I cursed the waters. 15 Wherefore, the days will come that no flesh shall be safe upon the waters. Mosiah 4:7

Those born during the millenial reign of Christ will be born at a time when Satan is bound. It's possible to assume that with Satan being bound, and living under the reign of Christ, they might live a life without sin, and thus may not need the redemptive power of the atonement. It's also taught that this group of people will not die, but they will be changed, and thus may not need the resurrective power of the atonement. This leads to the conclusion that there may be some who do not need the atonement and will be not be a candidate for eternal burning.

  14. If you’re singing the Hosanna Anthem (as I thought you were hinting in the other thread) . . . I think I might still take that bet. Not all the GAs live in Salt Lake (Oaks and Uchtdorf live across the street from each other in Bountiful). Even if the Q15 were just dedicating a site for their Thursday prayer meetings, one would think the Church Administration Building (where their offices already are, and which is beautifully decorated) would more than suffice. My money is that if you’re singing the Hosanna Anthem, it’s either a) as a generic celebration of the Restoration; or b) because the conference will have been joined by a Very Special Guest. Sadly, if it’s b), I’ll probably be feeling a little too crispy to celebrate my clairvoyance.

  17. Panics and scares (legitimate or otherwise) follow similar patterns. What has usually been up next, is a run on banks as everyone takes out their money. 2 things different this time around: - The panic/scare is about touching infected things, and people think paper currency is a prime candidate for infected things. - Electronic currency is bigger than ever before in history, and our grid is more resilient than ever before. People pay for groceries with their apps, and waving their phones at things. A generation has passed since people place a premium on physical currency. Also, the pipeline of halfway decent information to the dumbest among us is bigger than ever before. Online, shaming people for ignorance is the new black. Nobody wants to be on the clueless end of anything, so they've all got access to some pretty good information. I can see this happening in various discord and facebook and youtube interactions. Jocks aren't the bullies anymore, smart geeks are. It makes people get smart out of self defense.

  19. Yes indeed, that notion is enshrined in his platform. Only people who "need" extra protection should be able to have it (assuming they can afford private credentialed security. Poor women with restraining orders against violent predators are out of luck.) It's not a right, it's based on need and ability to afford. The "need" part is implicit in his statements/platform/actions. The "afford" part is the big evil glaring hole in his stupid opinion, and he should be metaphorically clubbed over the head with that hole every chance people get, until he abandons it. (I'm not passionate about this topic or anything, why do you ask? )

    BYU classroom lecture

In part, at least when I was at BYU, it was not uncommon (perhaps required) that professors (art, computer science, etc) would take time to bear their testimonies or share how their subject matter related to the gospel etc. What happened in this particular case, I don't know.

  21. If these comments were made during a lecture that was supposed to be about business, I would be unhappy about that. It sounds like 10 minutes being spent on material totally unrelated to the primary subject or purpose of the lecture.

  22. Too many variables. Falls into the general category of “how to tell someone a truth that they don’t want to hear?”. Depending on temperament, relationship quality, and sincerity—they may need to be mollycoddled, or they may need to be told point-blank that they’re full of crap and need to repent. One approach might be “look, a cabal of progressive HCO employees and faculty thought they could advance your cause by making you the subject of a theological turf war between themselves and CES, and it blew up in their faces, and you got hurt, and yes, it’s a terrible thing, and hopefully the people responsible will be fired and hopefully we’ve all learned a painful lesson about the dangers of falling for false doctrines that the prophets warned against but that we were already psychologically primed to receive.”

  23. Follow the link provided to read it in context. It's vintage McConkie dry humor. Here is the paragraph: In the Old Testament, Genesis is the book of books—a divine account whose worth cannot be measured. Exodus and Deuteronomy are also of surpassing worth. Numbers, Joshua, Judges, the Samuels, the Kings, and the Chronicles are all essential history, interwoven with deeds of faith and wonder that form a background for an understanding of the Christian faith. Leviticus has no special application to us and, except for a few passages, need not give us permanent concern. Ruth and Esther are lovely stories that are part of our heritage. The Psalms contain marvelous poetry, and the portions that are messianic and that speak of the last days and the Second Coming are of great import. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Lamentations are interesting books; Job is for people who like the book of Job; and the Song of Solomon is biblical trash—it is not inspired writing. Ezra, Nehemiah, Obadiah, and Jonah are the least of the prophets; and all the rest of the prophets—Isaiah above them all—each in his place and order set forth the doctrinal and prophetic word that must be studied in depth.

  24. I believe that the book of Job gives insight into how God works with men. As Elder McConkie said, "Job is for people who like the book of Job." I do not believe that God and Satan casually chat, as the highly formulaic retelling in Job might suggest. I don't believe that Satan goes before God to request permission to afflict people, and that God then grants that permission. I do not believe that Satan creates life or manipulates non-human life to afflict mankind. Insofar as the book of Job suggests otherwise, it's clear that the book of Job is speaking figuratively or in allusion or as a fable. Job may well have been an actual man, and the trials that he faced in the book might well reflect actual trials faced by a real Job (and perhaps by the rest of us). But to use that to draw the conclusion that Satan bargains with God to afflict mankind is as absurd as using the Biblical account of the sun standing still during Joshua's defeat of the Amorites to draw the conclusion that the sun circles the earth.

    Is it hard?

I have come a little late to this conversation. I really liked @anatess2 ‘s first response. She may not realize how often and much I agree with her because I seldom make note of it. I will start my remarks from here with a little parable about cycling: When I first started cycling I posted a little note on my handle bars of all my gear ratios with color highlights for rapid gear changes. I studied training information, equipment and various advantages. Often I would take “training” rides to concentrate on various elements to improve, strength, endurance and tactical elements of riding. I thought this would come in handy when competing. However, as I grew to enjoy riding and commuting by bicycle to work I found I did not need training rides – I could incorporate everything in to my commuting and that I could improve and enjoy ridding doing the same thing. Over time some things I did to learn evolved such that I did other things – I no longer care about gear ratios except when I purchase or upgrade my equipment. Now to apply the parable – there was a philosopher (forget their name) that criticized Christians by comparing them to geese that waddle around all week in the mud – but then on one day a week they waddle to a meeting place to talk about flying. After which the waddle back through the mud to their regular place and continue to waddle around in the mud. But they never fly – they only talk about flying. The goal of true religion is not to read scripture, nor to pray nor to mediate and think about G-d. Though these things can help us achieve divine goals – they are not the goal. Jesus taught this very principle in his parable of the Good Samaritan. The Levites and Priests exhibited the most piety. Of all people among the Jews – the Samaritans were considered the less religious or without piety. But it was the Good Samaritan that most exhibited the worship of G-d by loving his neighbor. The first commandment is to love G-d. Some think that means to go to church and worship – that is being religious. But Jesus said that the second great commandment was just like the first – meaning that in true worship they cannot be separated. If we are like the ancient Levite and Priest that do not help the dying and wounded in need – then all our scripture reading, praying and going to church is worthless. Another way to put this is: Going to church, reading scripture and praying will no more make a person a Christian than sleeping in a garage will make someone a Ford or Chevy. It is not what you do while all your Christian friends are watching that makes someone a Christian – not that those things should not be done – but the real effort to be a Christian happens when only you and G-d know what you did. I believe when you are this kind of Christian – you do not need pick-me-ups, balance, rest or revival. I believe Jesus (scripture) put it this way – “You will walk and not be weary; run and not faint.” You will enjoy cycling – weather you are commuting to work, riding on a weekend or competing in a race – you will enjoy the hardship of a hot sunny day or a windy stormy day because it is what you want to do. All those pix and memes showing the meatless sausage and soy milk still on the shelves while everything else is gone? I'm seeing it in real life. But all my usual crap was still available, while everyone else was fighting over the last quart of milk. I'm stocked up on soymilk, fat free cheese, and Big Bowl of Boring brand cereal. Plenty left for everyone else.

Australian saints, and probably saints in many countries are faced with a situation where they have to choose between God and government in a way that I thought would never happen - the church says we cannot attend church but our government says we can attend church as long as its not more than 500 people. I never thought I'd live to see the day when the government says we can attend church and the church says we cannot!
