  1. There are studies that explain that in the ancient Hebrew culture, "white and exceedingly fair" refers to clothing and related covenant or temple language. Racism often intersects culture and ethnicity (as well as attitudes about many other human characteristics and constructs, both natural/genetic and social), and this is why I think they often get merged into "racism". It is hard to tease them apart, and one form of power abuse (bigotry) is no better than the other, anyway. I don't think the Book of Mormon condemns racism explicitly, but its teaching that all God's children are treated equally under the Atonement of Christ ("all a alike unto God") and its record of laws for inspired secular (Mosiah 29:38, Alma 30:11) and church (Alma 1:26) government certainly sends a the message that racism is (among all other forms of inequality) is wrong.

What are the “doors of the sea” mentioned in the very next verse? There’s such a thing as being overly literal with scripture; especially with a book like Job that is primarily intended as a meditative work of poetry/philosophy rather than “history” as we understand the term in the 21st century.

    socialism

This is a true Story. I was in Switzerland last September 2019 eating in a nice restaurant in Lucerne with several friends. The conversation varied, but at one point I held out against Socialism and railed against the evilness of it. Topics were changed and we went on to other subjects. As we were eating dessert, a couple came to the table and stated that they had overheard the conversation about the evils of Socialism. They were from Russia, and had lived there during the Soviet period. Now living in Chicago, they stated that anyone who has lived in a socialist society hates socialism. They hated it, that's why they emigrated from Russia as soon as they could. They came to hate their local politicians in Chicago, and were looking to leave there as well. No one who has lived through what happened behind the Iron Curtain likes socialism except the ones who had privileged positions in those societies. As far as the NHS goes, I have been in the UK many, many, times and have some good friends there. My friends wife made a very good living selling...………….wait for it...…………...Health Insurance! The NHS is not for everyone for sure. Also it is a big political football. Almost daily in the press the NHS has front page headlines. Good or bad depending on the POV of the newspaper. So why any normal government would want to take on the responsibility for the general health of their population is beyond me. A way to buy votes, I assume.

    Angels

Catholic traditions/Tradition teach of some people being created / some not, and a whole bunch of different species* (God, humans, various angel classes, etc). Besides God, all other persons had a time where they did not exist and then when they did. Also in Catholic tradition, some persons have the right to choose, and some do not. LDS beliefs are different. A person is a person, no different species*. All existed before this world was made, and before any recording of time (there's no time they didn't exist). All have the right to choose. It's actually super simple. @Jonah, if you want to engage in conversation here, that's always welcome. *"Species" = is a poor fitting word here, but it's the best I have.

  5. I would counsel them to continue conversing exactly as they normally do. If that includes complimenting the current administration or identifying falsehoods others speak, go for it, and let the chips fall where they may. Better to be wrongfully cast out than to sit silently so as not to offend the taskmasters.
