    Fallacy question

The argumentum ad logicam is "the fallacy of assuming that something is false simply because a proof or argument that someone has offered for it is invalid". That's not exactly what you were talking about, but it's similar.

    Victory Garden

In the spirit of water conservation and letting my lawn yellow and to heck with the parking strip, I followed a weird suggestion from a Facebook gardening group and will be growing melons in said parking strip. So far they've sprouted like I have never had melons do. I'm quite excited.

  4. But a beloved strawman it is, always dragged out and dutifully flogged in such situations.

  5. I just want to make it clear that literally nobody is making the argument that men and boys don’t have responsibility over their own thoughts and actions. That is a straw man claim that always gets brought up in this discussion.

  9. Some years ago I had a public debate with a prominent atheist concerning the existence of G-d. I discovered that my atheist friend had a false concept of G-d that I could not believe in any more than he did. The problem, for me, was frustrated because I could not convince him that his concept of G-d was false. But this frustration, for me, is not just with atheist but with many religious types - especially those that espouse the Trinity doctrine of G-d (which was what my atheist friend thought was the proper understand of G-d). Jesus taught that no one can know G-d the Father without knowing his Son (the Messiah and Christ) that was sent to redeem mankind. I am convinced that there can be a disconnect in our understanding of the Son of G-d that can lead many to have a false faith in the Messiah and the Suzerain of Heaven that is G-d the Father. What I believe we ought to understand is that the light of Christ draws us towards Christ but that we cannot know him except through covenant - and the first such covenant is Baptism for the remission of sins so that we can receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands by someone with authority. Unless and until we covenant with G-d we cannot exercise faith in Christ. The Traveler

  10. No. Conduct yourself modestly because it’s the right thing to do before God. Not to do with others. Now hold on a minute. When @Fether summarized modesty as a standalone principle, every point came back to cultural norms and acceptable behaviors with other people. I don't think you can divorce modesty from culture anymore than you can separate the first great commandment from the second.

  11. I actually did not know that, even though I love the play. My favorite of his is Macbeth with Hamlet being 1a. Mercutio has some truly funny lines (so does the nurse) but it’s hardly a comedy.

  12. There has been talk that the recent spate of 9-0 decisions is at least partly a response to court-packing plans; SCOTUS’s way of saying “no, we actually aren’t all that politically divided”. This decision seems to be in harmony with that theory; it apparently (per Politico’s coverage) dodges the substantive issue and doesn’t really accomplish a whole lot.

  13. That it was 9-0 is very surprising.

  15. My first thought was "yes," but the more I think about it my answer would be "no." Faith is a choice and a gift. When we exercise faith we are "acting" for ourselves and not being acted upon. In this case, an atheists is being "acted upon" by the "light of Christ" without them even knowing it.

  16. Christ is the only thing we can have faith “in”. What atheists are doing is they have faith THAT this particular good action will make them feel good or that it will benefit it them in the future.

    First Responders

In prepping and 2nd amendment circles there is a saying... "When seconds count... the police (or other first responders) are minutes away." I have every respect for our First Responders, but there is a lot to be said about the idea of being able to correctly resolve issues or at least keep them from getting worse until the pros can get there and do their thing. But that would require many people to really know what they are doing

  19. Sharing a personal experience: when I was 10, I attended a soccer training camp at BYU. One afternoon we had some water sports at the fields, to which we all wore our bathing suits (me in my one piece). As the day came to a close, I got separated from my group. Lost and distressed, I went into one of the buildings, hoping someone could give me directions. The response from the lady at the front desk “Come back when you are dressed modestly, then I might be able to help you.” We need to be very careful on how we approach some gospel topics.

  20. My aunt one time went through something like this. Her daughter brought home a guy who dressed like a fool-saggy jeans, trashy tank top (this was over 20 years ago), etc. In a moment of extreme brilliance my aunt started talking about how cool he looked. Guess what? Her daughter lost all interest in the guy. It’s the same kind of thing here. Once you start talking about how cool and hip your daughters new outfit is, she’ll probably be mortified and go change.
