Tips to avoid potential Bishopric assignment
lilered replied to LDSVALLEY's topic in Priesthood Quorums and Scouting
I would recommend you wear a sign on your back this coming Sunday all the time you are at Church, asking for everyones vote, that you be the new Bishop. The sign should ask them for their vote and give the Stake Presidents Home Phone Number -
Snow: I respectfully disagree. The point is that those that wrote about the Birth of the Savior (Diciples), gave their account. Your point is that those Biblicial accounts differ. My point is that these accounts were written from memory, many years after the occurances. Human beings view things and remember things differently. Understanding this phenomana gives understanding as to how their can be differences between the versions surrounding Christs birth.

Are you sure about that? If you are talking about the new K.C. Temple, I was told it will be in Clay County!!

Haven't you ever heard of the repeat button? Pam hit it 13, 659 times.

glennh: Obviously you are mistaken. I checked with my wife (who is the hottest women alive) and she is adament that she has never appeared on your homepage.

A man feared his wife wasn't hearing as well as she used to and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family doctor to discuss the problem. The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the doctor a better idea about her hearing loss. Here's what you do," said the Doctor, "stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to 30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response." That evening, the wife is in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was in the den. He says to himself, "I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens." Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?" No response. So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, "Honey, what's for dinner?" Still no response. Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, "Honey, what's for dinner?" Again he gets no response. So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. "Honey, what's for dinner?" Again there is no response. So he walks right up behind her. "Honey, what's for dinner?" (I just love this) "BOB, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!"

I may be mistaken, but I am under the understanding that if the individual holds the Aaronic Priesthood, the local Bishop governs, thus a Bishops court is convened if necessary. If the serious violation ocurrs with a member holding the higher priesthood or Melchizadek, the the Stake President has authority and or a Stake court may be convened.

While I did not read everyones comments I did read a good many. What seems to me to be one of many explanations for many of the differences is that each of the Diciples had very different writing styles, in addition each had their own personality. This would be no different than if you ask the Quorum of the Twelve to seperatly write about the birth or life of Prophet Hinkley. There would be many different versions of the same story. This phenomena is exactly why we should be careful about hanging on every single word in the scriptures and/or taking it out of context or looking for hidden meanings. Instead, we ought to be more concerned with understanding the various themes that are being taught and spend the effort on trying to improve on our obediance to the commandments.

Aesa: You are welcome. There are many on the forum who have similiar expierences. Feel free to ask any questions or to make comments anytime you feel the urge.

We are to pray always as commanded by God. We are also told in the scriptures to pray over our flocks, our fields, etc. It seems to me that being so commanded indicates to me the importance of praying for our needs and righteous desires. Less important would be the place or time. More important is that we think about what we are praying for and when we do this, it is as if we receive a healers balm. One should think of those things that are truly needed. We should bring our goal, our hopes, and dreams to the Lord and set them before Him. Heavenly Father wants us to approach Him and ask for His divine aid. Explain to Him the trials we are facing. Set before Him our righteous desires. I personally have prayed in the shower, in my car, on my knees, standing, sitting, etc.,. If we are to pray always, then sometimes it is necessary to use other methods beside kneeling. Always would indicate that it should be more than just at our church meetings or a structured environment.

Theadvise concerning watching the movie Fireproof is a good one. My advise would follow the same lines as some of the previous. You can not change your spouse, but you can change yourself. Doing the same thing over and over will only end up with the same results. Thus, if you both refuse to commit to caring and loving one another, then love will not grow. The key word is love. You must be willing to love your husband enough to overlook his weanesses, his mistakes, etc. and your own needs, and instead concentrate on making your home one of love. Don't be pulled into arguements, find ways to compliment him on the good things he does, and overlook the bad. Tend to yourself, by going to church, the temple, etc. invite him to go if he chooses. Pray often. Change your attitude. If he really does care, he will eventually start to change because he too will be drawn to the light.

Wow! I just thought I had heard every reason to join the church. Now I must add a new one.

It seems to me that you should be seeking to understand what you core beleifs really are. Do you beleive in God?, Do you believe in Christs atonment and sacrifice, Do you believe that God speaks thru Prophets today? Etc. If so, then why is it so hard to accept that Joseph Smith while being a Prophet, was still a man, therefore fully capable of being tempted by the devil at times, make mistakes at times, and yet was no different that many of Biblicial Prophets. A great example was Moses, look what a great and wonderful Prophet of God he was, and yet because of his mistake, he was not allowed to set foot in Israel before he died. There are many more similar stories.Comments in red: I do hope you firnd the answers you are seeking.

One of the toughest things in life to do is love someone so much that you allow them to be responsible for their own actions. Most of us want to help those who are addicted we make excuses for them, bail them out, and overlook their mistakes. Problem is that we can't save them from themselves when the keep on wanting to be addicted and for some of us, it takes a long time to learn that. I know it did me. Once we finally, figured out to quit enabling after many years and unsuccesful tries, and let them face the music, after much prayer and faith, one of our children finally got their act together but only after we quit rushing in to help pick up the pieces and pay the bills.

Our ward scout troops have been selling candy bars to raise funds for scout camp. At the close of the daily event, I observed that a few of the scouts had placed some of the candy bars aside and upon questioning, they were theirs, even though they had not purchased them. Upon further questioning I learned that during the selling process, some customers had simply donated the cost of the candy bar, but didn't want the candy bar. The scouts turned the donated money in, but retained the candy bar in these type of situations. Further they indicated they had been instructed to do so from their parents, reasoning that these candy bars were free and therefore could be eaten by the scouts. I instead insisted that the scouts turn these candbars in for re-selling by the scouts to further aid in the fund raising. That to do otherwise would be unethicial and the intent of the giver was to donate the purchase to the scout project not to the scout individually. Only when the pre-paid candybar was sold, would the project receive a free donation as intended by the giver, otherwise it was no different than selling a candybar the normal way. A couple of adults disagreed, indicating that they should not be resold but given to the scouts. Your thoughts?

I am in favor of a flat tax on gross income. To me, this would be a fair way to apply a tax principle. Using as a basis of 10%, then if one makes, say 15K, then their tax bill would be $1500, if one makes 1.5 M annually, they would pay $1500, (no deductions). I am against using net income because their are numerous different deductions that could be withheld that everyone would not have nor afford. Example 401K, medicial, dental, stock purchases, etc. The arguement that only businesses find loopholes for taxes is erroneous. I know several folks who hide income from the government in various ways. I.E. Small home businesses such as crafts, sewing, baby sitting, homecare, house sitting, garage sales. For business I am not sure how a flat tax would work . Everyone I know who runs a small business has a much greater opportunity for using their business for personal gain. I.E. Company Vehicles for all company officers (Husband and Wife joint owners), buying things thru the busines, then taking them home for personal use. I.E. Boats, Summer homes, Motorhomes, Trailers, Tools, etc.

I have to agree with the basis above. Women have different needs and desires than men as pointed out. It takes a lot of effort from both to make a great marriage and caring enough for each others needs to make the effort to fulfill them. In the case of the woman, most women do have a tendency to gain weight during pregnancy, but not all continue to pack it around afterwards. No different than we men who continue to get a larger beer gut the older we get. It is much wiser to be physicially and mentally responsible the older we get and to keep ourselves attractive.

Power corrupts whether it be in business or government. We have a lot of recent examples of this. What should bother everyone is apparant impunity that exists for those caught stealing or making bad business decisions at taxpayers expense. Either way, we the taxpayer/employees end up with the affects of this behavior. I have witnessed greed and unethicial behavior at all levels of business and government so I don't think that just executives are guilty. For me, it makes a great witness for term limits in politics, tougher enforced laws for mischievious behavior, and mandatory prison sentences for blue and white collar crime. The Boards of thes huge companies should also be held accountable and given stiff penalties when these business break the law.

As a point. What if you owned a building and you had it advertised for lease or rent. Everyone knows you own the property. A client wants to lease the building for 10 years say. Wants to open up a porn. shop/strip club and sell pornography and booze/ smokes. Will you lease it to him, knowing what the building will be used for? -
Fact or Fiction: Donnie Osmonds' real boss is Marie. Poligamists like doublemint gum because they like the jingle: Double your pleasure, double your fun, take two wives to marry, instead of just one. Clint Eastwood was a reincarnated Porter Rockwell.
