  1. For those of you who enjoy laughter, and think it might help you live long, research laughter yoga. Then go watch the Stooges. Also research Gabor Matte and his studies on stress. Will laughter stop all heart attacks? No, but less stress might stop a few.

  2. Clean eating to me also means staying away from processed and packaged foods. Eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats. Staying away from sugars except for the natural sugars found in some foods.

I don't find much of a conspiracy theory in that at all.

I was going to suggest the term, eating clean, is just plain dumb. I thought, conspiravy theory, was kinder. Apparently I should have just used, dumb.
  3. I am not sure that recognizing the billions of dollars being spent on diet and exercise is being paranoid. But, I have been watching a lot of X-Files episodes, that could be rubbing off on me. so that and Folk Prophet's Ph.d. in psychology have me pegged.

  4. What does eating clean mean? I see that phrase thrown around quite a bit, but I do not believe it is anything more than a cultural meme the diet/exercise/industrial complex came up with to scare us into futility. If one "eats clean" then that same person can "eat dirty"?

The Twinkie Diet was nothing more than one researcher's attempt to see if people could lose weight on an "anti" low carb diet. And he did. The media got a hold of his study and ran with it. I do not think he promotes it as a life style change. He did not just eat Twinkies either...his diet "evolved" into 1200 calories of junk food a day.

Tom Naughton was one of the gentlemen who watched Super Size Me and cried "bologna"! (Literally) His term. He made a responding documentary called Fathead. Interesting stuff, and he did eat fast food for a month and lost weight.

Roy Walford wrote Beyond the 120 Year Diet. His research showed, in "lower life forms", life could be extended through calorie restriction. It is presumed that such practice could extend human life significantly as well. Aubrey de Grey, at Oxford (Cambridge?), believes he is on track to extend human life expectancy indefinitely. Hugh Nibley presented an interesting essay/talk on "the boredom" of endless life titled "But What Kind of Work?" it can be read in Approaching Zion.  It certainly would be a challenge, but according to Mormondom's gadfly, worth it.

  5. Some years ago I felt like the calling of Elder's Quorum President was headed my way. Within a reasonable amount of time the then presiding EQP was released. After that I was still reaching Gospel Doctrine. I thought I was being arrogant to have had such thoughts.

Fast forward a few months after that when a member of the stake presidency spoke. It is not uncommon for men and women to be prompted to feel ready for a calling in which just one person would be called.

  6. I find Catholicism fascinating, am not Catholic, and find this thread interesting. I might be a blunt instrument because I'm not sure I see a need to address it (the thread) in any other manner for which it was intended. Let me answer my built in question, I am a blunt instrument.

  7. After a lackluster Super Bowl, a disinterest in basketball, and endless chatter about Tiger Woods on the Golf Channel, baseball season is about a week away. I am pulling for Oakland, even though I live in the Colorado/Seattle television market. Go figure that out.

  8. My brother is doing this and has had great results. I've been doing the Sprint8 program (Dr Mercola). It's free and so far I've really enjoyed it.

Dr. Mercola is an interesting fellow. I have watched a couple of his Youtube posts. I have not done the Sprint 8, but have cut my strength training down considerably an I am still seeing progress in strength.

  9. Thinking about all this, I don't think Crossfit is what I'm looking for but I'm already involved in a lot of physical activities throughout the day. Like some others have mentioned, I also love yoga and have been taking a class a couple times a week for just over a year now, I really have fun doing it. I'm more looking into some new workouts that my husband might be able to do. So far I've looked into PX90 and now Crossfit, it seems like these two are well suited for men. My husband is super busy and does a regular workout with me throughout the week but I think he gets bored and wants to push himself some more. He is in good shape and is 40-something. I am in good shape and am 20-something. Basically, we both have pretty good cardio but that's mostly what we do together is run or swim, he does some intermediate strength training and I do moderate.

Your posts have been really helpful. Thank you.

    Hi Bini,

If you are looking primarily for your husband, and his back is OK, try the DDP Yoga program. Developed by a professional wrestler, Diamond Dallas Page, for regular guys.

  10. Rhabdomyolysis seems to be a term being bantered around the net concerning Crossfit. It is a condition where the muscle tissue breaks down, leading to accute (?) kidney issues. However, this appears to be more of a problem caused by over-zealous Crossfit-ters and less to do with responsible Crossfit studios/gyms. I personally, cannot do the Crossfit/boot camp type workouts due to congenital hip and back deformities.

There has been a Crossfit gym that has opened in town. I have not been in, so cannot give an opinion. I will say, when it first opened, I chuckled and thought the two PT's in town have to be high fiving their way to the credit union. But, I have not heard any talk about the business one way or the other, so I guess things are great.

  11. I would like to say yuck to this thread, and probably would, but after turning 50 this last week I joined AARP and there was a rather interesting article on their website on Bill Clinton and his turning vegan. Apparently he has reversed his angina, and his biomarkers have improved substantially. I truthfully never liked him much as president, but he does seem like a pretty amiable guy. So, good luck to him.

  12. Yes,

I have been watching Premier League on Fox Soccer for several years. Also I take in the Bundesliga on Gol TV. Most chores around the house come to a stop during the Euro Cup and World Cup.

I was a bit surprised this year that Manchester City took the cup from Manchester United, but that is what keeps it interesting.

So, youare a West Brom fan?

  13. I have played chess for many years and even belong to a chess club, I have a U.S. Rating of 1956. for some of those who know what a rating is.

I tried to start a ward chess club but no takers.

That is excellent, an A player pushing Expert. They say Humphrey Bogart was an A player. LDS folks don't seem to be keen on games. Keep trying though.
