  1. My duties on the High Council include Stake Missionary preparedness, prospective Elders and returned missionaries as well as an assigned Ward. Recently, my Stake President has asked me to prepare a presentation for the Stake Presidency and High Council on how to better prepare our youth for missions and also best practices to keep them active and growing spiritually when they return.

I m really hoping for some feedback :-)

Does you Ward or Stake do anything special to prepare youth for their missions and their return?

Also, any ideas or thoughts on either of these subjects is greatly appreciated!

  2. LeSellers...I am not sure how some blessings can happen in the life to come. For instance, being told you would have excellent health and will live a long life, but instead are sickly and die young. We will all be raised to incorruption, so, how then does this type of blessing get fulfillled?

Joseph Fielding Smith (or some other prophet/apostle) was adamant that man would never walk on the moon. When they did, the apostle/prophet was asked about it. He said "Well, I guess I was wrong about that, huh?"

Well, he spoke as a man right? Patriarchs are men to be sure, but the blessings they pronounce are from God and the only ones ( I think) that are recorded in the church.

  4. So, the blessing is not a recitation of future events, but of possible future events? My blessing said I would experience a health problem...I did, unexpectedly. (Heart attack). What of those that are faithful and worthy and still those things do not come to pas?

  5. I am grateful for my Patriarchal Blessing and have at times been amazed at the accuracy. I know that we are told that sometimes, the blessings may not occur during this life. But, what about blessings that say someone is going to marry in the Temple but doesn't or that someone is to serve an honorable full time mission but doesn't or can't do to circumstances beyond their control?

Why would a Patriarch pronounce things that do not come to pass if led by the Spirit to do so? We know the Lord knows the future and would know if circumstance or even choices made by an individual would prevent or preclude them from doing certain things.

I have pondered this for a while as I have met people who's blessing said they would marry in the Temple and they did not or that they would serve missions and they did not. It would be easy to dismiss and say, it was because they chose to not do these things. And that may even be true....but, why then would this be part of someone's blessing? A blessing from the Lord who knows all including what we will do.

    Thoughts?

i've been taking various forms of karate on and off for twenty five years. I've seen it all before. To me a sensible martial arts instructor who doesn't think they are "Indestructible! Unbeatable! I belong in Mortal Kombat real life tournaments!"  is like a round square or a married bachelor. Just ain't gonna see it.

Yes, I'm being slightly over the top.

I have studied Rex Kwondo extensively

  7. Speaking of personal apostasy. The missionary that baptized my youngest son, that brought the Gospel to my home and helped reactivate my family is one who now champions this issue and all things leftist politic. He doesnt resemble the excellent missionary that was so spiritual at all and now has long hair, flowing beard and is involved with such worthy organizations as Occupy and now ......is shacking up with Kate Kelly of Ordain Woman fame. After a quick view of her Facebook page, I wonder how anyone could ever have really been a disciple....

Talk about heart breaking....seeing this young man change so much that has meant so much in my life and my families. Total confusion..

  8. I think it all boils down to the Gift of the Holy Spirit and our desire to have it lead and guide us every moment of every day. Without it, it's easy to be deceived and sometimes things which should have the appearance of evil begin to appear good and desirable.

Wherefore, take heed, my beloved brethren, that ye do not judge that which is evil to be of God, or that which is good and of God to be of the devil.

For behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night.

For behold, the Spirit of Christ is given to every man, that he may know good from evil; wherefore, I show unto you the way to judge; for every thing which inviteth to do good, and to persuade to believe in Christ, is sent forth by the power and gift of Christ; wherefore ye may know with a perfect knowledge it is of God.

^This.  "Gender" is a grammar construct used in languages in which nouns have a feminine or masculine (or sometimes neuter) gender.  It is applied to words, not living things.  In the late '80s newscasters started using the word "gender" because they were too squeamish to say "sex."  It caught on and for a while the two terms were interchangeable.  Now it's a convenient word for people who want to promote this stuff.

Perhaps the First Presidency should change gender to sex....

ALL HUMAN BEINGS—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.

  10. I think the video is a hoax. I will admit to finding breastfeeding in public....unusual, but would never approach someone and insult them. I think most would just ignore....especially if there was a man with her.

That said, the ...militant breast feeders are out there and I think look for confrontation. My wife is a High School Principal and there are some militant mom's that have come to parent meetings and breastfed....not infants, mind you....but small kids.3-5 years old. Bleck.........

  11. I am often shocked by the memes I see posted on Facebook.....by fellow saints. Memes that use foul language including the F-bomb?? Also often see posts like OMG or what the F (not the word) etc.

What do you think causes people to post what they likely wouldn't say (I guess)? I can't imagine how someone see's it, read's it and thinks...'' I'll post it without it causing them to think...- highly inappropriate?

I somehow think this is akin to the ability to not be shocked or think much of our culture as vulgar or debasing. Desensitization.

  12. I actually really like that perspective. I'm still skeptical of institutions as they often have a tendency to corrupt otherwise decent individuals, like a certain Tea Party candidate who was recently revealed to be the recipient of large donations from Goldman Sachs. Politics destroy good people. The system is built that way.

Not an expert on political donations....but I don't think the tea party candidate you refer to received an extraordinary donation from GS compared to another candidate from the opposition that received more than 10x the amount donated to TP candidate. The other "scandal" with TP candidate and GS is a non issue....people margin their investment accounts all the time and pay a hefty interest rate in the process. I believe we charge 7% for margin loans. (essentially collateralizing their securities)

  13.  I'm sure there are even some who support [openly-Socialist-candidate-for-US-president-who-never-would-have-been-given-the-time-of-day-by-any-rational-American-even-a-generation-ago-but-is-widely-supported-today].

Or a woman that has been an abject failure at everything she has been involved with and that is under investigation by the FBI. Though, it does seem to be a pattern by the democrat voters to overlook things like associations with known terrorists etc like our current dear leader.

  14. This is precisely what started my turn away from the Republicans.  I voted for George W. Bush because he talked about smaller government which I agreed with (judging by this statement you do as well).

Then he got in office and we got the Patriot Act and Homeland Security.

Could a President EXPAND the government any more than that if he tried?

And what about his father--famous for "Read my lips, no new taxes."  And yet what did he do when he got in office, but raise taxes.

If you're hoping for smaller government perhaps the best thing to do is vote third party.

Oh, I very much agree. Strong centralized government has existed since the end of the war between the states. I am not sure anyone can or will do anything to reduce the size of government, but, perhaps will try to eliminate the ever increasing encroachment of freedom and liberty.

The crux of the conversations hinges on moral issues and I am with Vort regarding the Democratic Party. Evil to the core and as far as voting third party, I think that is a throw away vote. I am registered ® though I am really libertarian and would prefer to try and change the evils of the ® from within than create something new.
