  1. There are obvious differences between Catholic beliefs about Mary and the LDS Church. We use Sacred Traditions and the Teaching Magesterium of our Church in the formulation of our doctrines and teachings along with Sacred Scripture.-Thus many differences exist. Mary in indeed deeply honored and venerated in the Catholic Church. She is not worshipped, although abuses on this issue have taken place in the past. Catholics pray to Mary as we would talk to a friend. What closer friend to Jesus than his Mother. This is why we call Mary "Mother of God." As a Catholic, I do not have to go through Mary or any Saint of my Church to get to God. I can and do pray to God directly. Catholics believe Mary prays for us on our behalf. She interceeds for us on our behalf. She asks for us on our behalf. We venerate her in the mostly Biblical Hail Mary "prayer" Catholics use the word "prayer" differently than non-Catholics, as Prayer includes for us in talking to Mary and the Saints. We ask them to "pray for us." In the "Hail Mary" Prayer-We ask Mary to--- "Pray for us." -The focus is alwys to God as we understand that term. Mary is subordinate to Jesus and God the Father. Go into any Catholic Church-and the chief symbol you will see is the Cross/Crucifix. You will not see a symbol/picture or statue of Mary directly between the congregation and the Cross. -Carol
  2. God directly tells you directly NOT to do something-and you do it anyway? -I would call that "sin." -Carol
  3. Please Provide your source link. I am a Catholic, and like "Mormons" we have suffered much for our faith. As our history is long-in times past we have not been as accommodating to other faith traditions where we held the majority. New York was early settled by the Dutch -then the English. Catholics were not the majority religion in early New York State. So-Please provide your source link for what you present. -Carol
  4. Adam was told by the Heavenly Father NOT to eat of the tree. Gen: 2: 16-17. Adam disobeyed the direction and command of God. Define Sin: Going against the commandments of God/Heavenly Father. -Carol
  5. As a Christian-I do good works to indeed keep the commandments. I do good works because Christ is my example of perfect love. I try-ever so poorly to follow that example. Love the Lord your God and Love your neighbor as yourself -pretty wells sums up what I should do-and sometimes do. Yes repentence is very much a part of my Christian belief as well. Fortunately, I have a God who is just and also loving. May our Heavenly Father continue to bless each of us with His Love. -Carol
  6. Me too! I am a Catholic and the doctrine is somewhat difficult to understand. The early church discussed such challenges and came to understand such a concept of God as Trinity. The word Trinity is not found in Sacred Scripture, but neither is the word Sacrament. The word Trinity attempts to explain one of the fundamental doctrines of the majority of Christians. Am I right-and you wrong?-who knows?-I sure don't. I do not make such a judgement on matters of faith. I guess we will all find out someday. As a Catholic Christian-I am Trinitarian in my belief-but the doctrine can be difficiult to understand. We spend much time learning about it in our Church Sacred Scripture Study and the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is the base of some of the ancient creeds of my Church. My faith does not depend on a deep understanding of the Trinity. My faith is rooted in how I understand the teachings of my Church as related to Christ's death and resurrection and how I view such an event in my life-and the changes that have occured in my life as a result of that event. Like you-I accept the teachings of my church as being true. To do otherwise, I would not call myself a Catholic nor you a member of the LDS Church. It is good to try to understand the teachings of other faith traditions-which is one reason why I am here-to be challenged, to grow in my own faith and to learn of the faith traditions of other wonderful Christians like yourself. -Carol
  7. Again-I congratulate the members of the LDS Church in the building of temples as you understand the will of our Heavenly Father.
  8. am in Albuquerque-home of UNM and the Lobos. We visit you all in Provo on Saturday. The Lobos have not had a great season-and BYU beat us last year at home. So-Go BYU and Go Lobos! BYU has high ranking in the Mountain West and National Polls. UNM has neither! -Carol
  9. Hi from a Catholic, -I congratulate the LDS Church for the building of more temples. From what I understand about the LDS faith tradition is that Temples are very important to you in carrying out will of your Heavenly Father. I would guess that Temples should be near the people as possible. Yes-Rome is the center of the Catholic Church-but we are world-wide as you are. I hope the membership of the LDS Church will invite the Pope or his representative to tour the Rome Temple before it is dedicated. Rome today is more of a secular city. The fastest growing religion in Italy and the EU is not Catholic or Protestant but---Islam. Welcome fellow members on the spiritual journey of life. I congratulate you in your efforts in carrying out the will of the Heavenly Father as you understand that message. -Carol
  10. Many people in my state pay no income tax and do not file-so voter registration by income tax would not work here. Voter Registration varies State by State. In New Mexico, we have no Voter ID card. Registration has a cut off date-like next week. One can register at post offices and at shopping malls and elsewhere. One can vote early or by absentee ballot-if they cannpt make it to their voting place. The procedure varies by State. -Carol
  11. Both concepts of the Fall and if infants have original sin or not rely somewhat on extra-Biblical ideas. (Outside the Old and New Testament) The LDS Church uses the Book of Mormon and D&C in the formulation of their doctrines and teachings. The Catholic Church uses Sacred Tradition and Church Council understandings in the formulation of their doctrines and teachings. Both believe those extra Biblical sources/ideas are being given to them in some manner or other by God/The Heavenly Father as they understand those terms. Despite the differences-the Catholic Church and the LDS Church are in agreement on the sanctity of life from it's earliest creation. Both are very Pro-Life and Pro-Family. Let us celebrate together the joy of creation and of infants and children and the joy they bring to us, our families and The Heavenly Father.
  12. I agree --walk on by. Generally-when people are persecuted in any way-their faith becomes stronger-such were the marks of the early church. I watch BYU-TV and am a financial contributer to BYU-TV. I love hearing and watching the conference speakers. Yes-Walk on by--and live your faith! -Carol
  13. Is your quote from the BOM? Please give reference-so I can look it up in my "Triple." Thanks, -Carol
  14. The Catholic Church uses Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition in the formulation of it's doctrines and teachings . Catholic Church Councils-in some ways similar to LDS Conferences codify understandings of the Church. These sections may help you. The link itself-gives references to Sacred Scripture and Church Councils. -Carol 404 How did the sin of Adam become the sin of all his descendants? The whole human race is in Adam "as one body of one man".293 By this "unity of the human race" all men are implicated in Adam's sin, as all are implicated in Christ's justice. Still, the transmission of original sin is a mystery that we cannot fully understand. But we do know by Revelation that Adam had received original holiness and justice not for himself alone, but for all human nature. By yielding to the tempter, Adam and Eve committed a personal sin, but this sin affected the human nature that they would then transmit in a fallen state.294 It is a sin which will be transmitted by propagation to all mankind, that is, by the transmission of a human nature deprived of original holiness and justice. And that is why original sin is called "sin" only in an analogical sense: it is a sin "contracted" and not "committed" - a state and not an act. 416 By his sin Adam, as the first man, lost the original holiness and justice he had received from God, not only for himself but for all human beings. 417 Adam and Eve transmitted to their descendants human nature wounded by their own first sin and hence deprived of original holiness and justice; this deprivation is called "original sin". 418 As a result of original sin, human nature is weakened in its powers, subject to ignorance, suffering and the domination of death, and inclined to sin (this inclination is called "concupiscence"). 419 "We therefore hold, with the Council of Trent, that original sin is transmitted with human nature, "by propagation, not by imitation" and that it is. . . 'proper to each'" (Paul VI, CPG § 16). 420 The victory that Christ won over sin has given us greater blessings than those which sin had taken from us: "where sin increased, grace abounded all the more" (Rom 5:20). 421 Christians believe that "the world has been established and kept in being by the Creator's love; has fallen into slavery to sin but has been set free by Christ, crucified and risen to break the power of the evil one. . ." (GS 2 § 2). Source: Catechism of the Catholic Church - The Fall

  16. Welcome Cody-this is a great place to meet others. You can fill out your profile to give more information about yourself and Rebecca if you wish. Thank you for your service to your country. Welcome! -Carol
  17. I do not think that Irenaeus,Clement of Alexandra, Justin Martyr,Athanasius or Augustine would like to be linked with Tilton, Copeland or Croch. CS Lewis was a great writer -and did not claim to be a theologian or religious leader. His books "Mere Christianity" and "The Problem with Pain" are my favorites.
  18. First-there is only ONE Catholic view of original sin-and the Fall of Man and that is what the Church teaches. Any other views are in conflict with the Catholic Church teaching; Here again is the Catholic view: See section 396-412 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH - TABLE OF CONTENTS - WITH PARAGRAPH NUMBERS Fall of Man-See above link-Paragraphs: 289, 390, 215, 385, 55, 70, 410 Fall of Man and Original Sin are of course linked in the Catholic understanding of Original Sin. Here is a rather lengthy article on the Fall of Angels and of Man as espoused by Pope John Paul II from the Vatican Archives: The Fall of the Rebellious Angels Here is an official Vatican Link on the subject of the Fall of Man: Starts paragraph 385. Catechism of the Catholic Church - The Fall Consequences of Fall start on Paragraph 400 onward -Carol
  19. Great quotes by some early Catholic leaders. Just because you may find a quote by an early or late Church leader of the Catholic Church-does not mean they are the doctrine of the Catholic Church as defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. If you wish current understanding of the Catholic Church-go to the source. English Translation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church with Search Utility Good quotes-but recognize the limits of them taken out of context of the entire writings of the given Church leader. -Carol
  20. If any church, LDS, Catholic, Protestant came out publically and opposed a specific political party they would risk losing their tax exempt status with the IRS. If one opposes a specific political party-they are in fact making a political statement. An individual may be opposed to the views of a political party-that is part of democracy--but not a church organization seeking or having a tax exempt status with the IRS. Publication 557 (06/2008), Tax-Exempt Status for Your Organization See Section under political activity. There is a fundamental policy of most churches to avoid a conflict between Church and State-and political parties relate to State -Carol
  21. Must have worked for the game against UNM here in Albuquerque last year. BYU won in the Mountain West. The Marriott Hotel-where the BYU team stayed-was impressed how the rooms were not trashed -like so many other visiting teams do. says much positive for BYU. -Carol
  22. I am a Catholic-the important thing is that Jesus was born-not the exact date. Did they use the currently used Gregorian Calendar in figuring out dates at the the time you mention? Or was it the Julian Calendar which predates the Gregorian: Gregorian calendar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Our current use calendar is of Catholic origin-see link above.
  23. Don't feel too bad. I am a Catholic and quite a few of my Baptist friends are praying that I get "saved." -Carol
  24. Interesting post--do you have a neutral link for your source? You infer that all Jews, Budhists, Hindu, Muslims could be be killed without fault before 1829. -Carol
  25. Hi, I am a Catholic. Your statement is simply not true for current Catholic understanding of Baptism. I do not know what other churches may say. Differences on Baptism exist between LDS and Catholic, but here is a more current understanding of the Catholic view. ---Here is a neutral- non-Catholic link on the subject of infant Baptism: here is one section: of the link:Infant baptism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "The Church has no official teaching regarding the fate of infants who die without Baptism, and theologians of the Church hold various views (for instance, some have asserted that they go to Limbo, which has never been official Catholic doctrine). "The Church entrusts these infants to the mercy of God" Here is a Catholic Link from Pope Benedict XVI on the subject Unbaptised children out of limbo, Benedict rules ""Our conclusion is that the many factors that we have considered ... give serious theological and liturgical grounds for hope that unbaptised infants who die will be saved and enjoy the beatific vision (of God)," Here is the official Vatican document on the subject; The Hope of Salvation for Infants Who Die Without Being Baptised -Carol baptism of Infants
