  1. Just for the record, I'm the only one who can "bull"y on this site. I am the resident cow (I have horns, so many mistake me for a bull).
  2. Hi, Brother___. How are you today? Thanks for your talk. I appreciated your comment on x.
  3. How does anyone know who has been recommended and rejected? Seriously, how does that get around? It means someone is gossiping and that someone is at a high level. So, yeah, I supported the SP to do a smack down. Unless it is the SP, then I would expect the Area Authority to do the smack down.
  4. Do you think the bishop should tell you that your name was taken to the Lord for the new YM president and rejected? Or to the woman when she was considered as a Primary teacher? How do you get right with the Lord? You get a temple recommend, use it worthily and continue to strive to do better. Callings are offered to someone who the Lords wants in that position. The Lord sometimes reveals why a person is good/not good for a particular calling. Sometimes He doesn't say anything other than "no." I guess I really don't understand why knowing why one was rejected for a calling would be helpful. I'm assuming you mean ANY calling and not just bishop. If you do mean just a bishop, then why is that calling more important to you where you wish people were given reasons for rejection (even if there is no "reason")?
  5. I"m being serious. What is a personal attack? I've seen where one says to another, "you are wrong. Here is evidence showing you it is wrong." And then people start crying personal attack. So, what is a personal attack?
  6. Or they can learn through the Spirit (and despite not having the gift of the Holy Ghost, the Spirit can still inspire and teach them) to endure disappointment and feelings of rejection, remain faithful to commandments and wait on the Lord to receive blessings. We can ache for and love those children, but this life is a test--and learning through the Spirit, enduring and remaining faithful during trials and waiting to receive blessings (while receiving other blessings along the way) is a test for this life.
  7. I dabble in it. My biggest problem is my dad's side. He was born and raised in Bulgaria. I have some names and a few dates (found on headstones), but records are non-existent. And I don't know if I need to keep putting the names using the Cyrillic alphabet or translate them into the English alphabet (which is not an easy thing to do). I wish I were wealthy enough to hire someone to research my paternal great grandfather. The family legend is he was adopted/raised after becoming a teen by a Turkish ruler and adopted the Turkish ruler's name which is my maiden name. I don't know how much of that is true and if so, why? what was his name before? what happened to him? I'm just fascinated with that story.
  8. I've used the plastic squeeze bottle thing. I have this: http://www.amazon.com/Neilmed-Sinus-Rinse-Starter-packets/dp/B000RJGB5C/ref=pd_bxgy_121_img_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0KS5ZCRPMP8WQGW8P9VP I followed the directions and never had an issue with it. It's uncomfortable (I mean, come on, putting water up your nose and remembering to not breathe through your nose just isn't comfortable). I honestly didn't feel a huge improvement. Perhaps I didn't stick with it long enough. I still use it now and again, usually in the winter when my nasal passages get dry.
  9. This is what it says under the video: How is he seeing his life in a different light? We didn't see anything other than the old man looking at the fine flowers (which obviously cost more) and then looking at his own humble flowers with disgust. I'm with the rest, other than envy, what is the message??
  10. That's how I feel as well, TFP. I don't necessarily buy coffee to serve, but I wouldn't have an issue with coffee/tea in my house because they don't affect people the same as alcohol.
  11. The garments are made from various fabrics, so you can almost always find a fabric that fits your own temperature. And without going into details, the garments are symbolic for things that help us to remember our covenants--the garments themselves are symbolic. I don't feel resentful. I know some do, but I've never felt that way. But I also know that there times that I cannot wear the garment (personal, medical reasons) and I felt that that is a choice for me and that God approves of that choice. Some people have a difficult time making a decision like that and taking it to the Lord for confirmation. We are told to wear the garment night and day and for some people, varying that in any degree feels wrong for them.
  12. Just a slight, but important correction: he is the son of the morning (not mourning).
  13. I remember Pres Hinckley saying it on the CBS interview with Mike Wallace as well. I miss that man so much. He was always so cheerful yet also firm when needed. I just loved him.
  14. No, it was President Hinckley. Essence of Missionary Service“Let me say that we appreciate the truth in all churches and the good which they do. We say to the people, in effect, you bring with you all the good that you have, and then let us see if we can add to it. That is the spirit of this work. That is the essence of our missionary service” (meeting, Nairobi, Kenya, 17 Feb. 1998). https://www.lds.org/ensign/1998/08/excerpts-from-recent-addresses-of-president-gordon-b-hinckley?lang=eng
  15. Girl's Camp activities would work great on Old Women Camp activities as well. Have a theme and then plan activities/devotionals to that theme. I remember one year at GC that the theme had a scripture that incorporated shoes--we had to bring or draw a shoe that represented us. We had tennis shoes, high heels, comfy loafers, house shoes, etc. It had something to do with being an individual and working together to be young women of God.
  16. Ok, the cutest dang costume that I saw (it was a niece of a friend) was she was dressed up as Little Red Riding Hood. Her German Shepard dog had on a housecoat and sleeping cap--he was the Big Bad Wolf posing as Grandma. Too cute for words.
  17. I can actually respect his belief to not read other things (to some degree). I refuse to read anti-Mormon literature. Even if said literature is given to me by well-meaning, loving individuals who are only concerned about me. I know my weaknesses and I know how that literature would affect me. So, I refuse to even glance at it. But, I am curious that if Byron won't read articles even about scripture, how did he even know about the Book of Mormon and what makes him curious about it?
  18. One of the things I've said before is that (usually talking about local callings such as SS teacher, bishop, RS homemaking, etc.) part of sustaining means you sustain them even when they do something wrong, dumb, or stupid. We are all human and none of us (including me or those listening) are above making mistakes. Our job as a sustainer is to help and forgive. So, the next time you feel like crabbing about the dumb thing that Sis so-and-so did, remember, you've had your share of dumb things--forgive her and then find out what you can do to help her.
  19. I agree with you that drinking wine isn't bad in and of itself. From my observations, most people just can't seem to stop at one glass of wine. Perhaps on occasion they stop, but more often than not, they drink more than one glass or more than one beer, etc. Even at professional settings, it amazes me that people don't exert self-control and get buzzed/drunk and act like idiots.
  20. I hate alcohol. I don't come from an alcoholic family, but I see the results of alcohol in the news and in individuals. I've made covenants to not drink it, so I don't drink it nor will I serve it (unless I have a job like waitressing, where I would be required). I recognize that others are not under the same covenants. But, because of my hatred for it, I don't want to support the industry, so I refuse to cook with it or eat anything that I know has alcohol in it. I don't require anyone to not drink it in front of me (in fact, I'll be having "drinks" with some cow-orkers this week), but once they begin to get buzzed or drunk, then I leave. I hate how it changes it people. And I will never understand why people celebrate it as they do. All you have to do is watch any show, comedian, anything and see what happens if they say the word, "beer" or "alcohol". The people cheer and go wild.
  21. I had a similar experience. At work one day, I was chatting with a cow-orker and asked about her weekend. She said she and her husband spent the weekend in north, central Indiana (an area known for Amish people living there). She said it was fun, but she kept getting frustrated getting stuck behind the Mormons all the time. I asked what she meant. You know, the Mormons and their horse/buggies. It's frustrating being in a car and getting stuck behind them waiting for the buggy to finally pull over for us to pass. When I pointed out that she is referring to the Amish and not Mormons (she even confirmed that she went to Amish Acres, a touristy spot in that area), she insisted I was wrong and they were in fact, Mormons. I kept telling her I was a Mormon, but she didn't believe me. She ended up asking another cow-orker who confirmed I'm a Mormon and I wear "normal" clothes and drive a car.
  22. Naw, I've got ya'll beat. I had someone actually believe that Mormons worshipped (their word, not mine) vegetables. It was in their "file" they had--they were ministers of another faith and had done research on Mormons to show that they are evil and a cult. In their "file" they prove we actually worship veggies. My friends (who are non-members) were astounded when these friends of theirs said that. They told them, "Um, no. We've had dinner with Beefche and she eats veggies. We've never seen her pray to them or anything like that." My friends were told they were just wrong and didn't know the truth.
  23. I don't know, Eowyn. I still like the whole virgins kidnapped and held in the secret orgy room of the temple. When someone has approached me with that rumor, I always get upset that I've yet to find that orgy room in any temple....and I've looked!
