  1. I agree with the advice of downloading Get My Ancestors from Ohana software. I've used that program. In the past it didn't bring in the ordinance work. I don't know if that has changed. The advice to only do a few generations is a good one. I tried more and it did freeze. I have enjoyed using this program in the past. Just be careful about what you download. I'd advise you to create a NEW PAF file and import the downloaded stuff there first so you can be sure of what you have before you import any of it into your personal PAF file. Much easier to go slowly than to make a big mistake and spend lots of time correcting it. Hope you have success with it. I've also used FamilyInsight and Roots Magic. But for what you described as wanting I think Get My Ancestors will be fine.
  2. I started using Roots Magic about a month or so ago. I do like it. I've had Legacy, Paf, AQ. I tend to feel quite at home with Paf and wondered about changing... but I like it. I don't know all the things you can do yet. I haven't looked at the reports (I made a couple books from Paf) so I don't know about that. I have been using it for updating my Ordinance Information and find it quite easy. In the past I used Insight to do that. At the moment it's all a learning process for me. I HAVE FamilyInsight but went ahead and purchased the Ordinance Tracker so I could use it with any of my genealogy programs. I find I really like Ordinance Tracker. I too have been called to teach the SS Genealogy class. BayouMom
  3. Loran are you referring to the church indexing program? If so, just recently they merged sign in information with lds.org If you have already signed up with lds.org and have a sign in name there and password then that is the name and password you will now use at familysearchindexing. I hope this helps.
  4. If you are worried about any damage that photocopying might do to the original what about taking a digital picture? If this were me I would probably include photos of the journal pages AND a typed version. Seeing the handwriting is something that I would like if it were my gift.
  5. Thanks for the info regarding the iron making a good seal on the mylar bags. I have a few big bags of food to put into the mylar bags, don't know if I'll get to it this week or not. I am trying to find places to put food in the house before I haul it in from the garage. I just watched a video of a lecture given by Wendy DeWitt in Arizona and am inspired to do more.
  6. I tried ordering a mylar bag sealer for myself and got a response that they are on backorder from ldscatalog (they don't know when they will get any in). My question is does anyone know if it's okay to use my FoodSaver machine to seal the mylar bags. I tried it and it 'seems' to have a good seal. I was just wondering if anyone out there has any information about whether or not it will hold. I still plan on putting the oxygen absorber in the bag even though the FoodSaver will draw air out. 7. Years ago we had a visiting pianist from Poland I believe. He gave out addresses of friends etc overseas that could use supplies and for years my mother sent toothbrushes and toothpaste. I can't remember what else she sent. So exactly how much is a years supply of TP and Paper Towels? Right now we are pretty good for 3 months of most things maybe even more once my Walton order arrives. What I am not sure about is the stuff I put up several years ago, I had to open to see if it's still okay. I am super bad at rotating. We've been working on the 72 hour kit. With the storm in the Gulf I guess now it's on my mind once again. If we loose electricity I should would want to know where the flashlights are (that's the trouble with having 10 grandsons.... they love flashlights).
  8. I'm really interested in canning meats (chicken, ground beef, roast beef). Can someone direct me? I don't have a canner yet, so spell it all out :) I need to know what are good cuts, do you precook or not, cook plain or season, how to store and length of times to store. How difficult is it? Thanks
  9. Do I understand you correct that the church is advising members not to can vegetables? If this is correct may I ask why? I am in the US and have not heard this.
  10. When a Hurricane hits the Gulf I've found that Bread, Bottled Water, Batteries, and Wood are the first to go. Looking for a loaf of bread in the grocery? Better get there fast. Oh yes, gasoline. A few years ago a fellow was running a generator, since you can't bring it inside it stayed on the patio in the back. He could hear the constant hum and knew it was still there... or so he thought. He figured out that it should be time to add gas to the tank. He went outside and instead of his generator he found a lawn mover running. Thieves had taken the generator. We've found that our neighbors are generous in times of disaster. We plan on being generous as well. My non member neighbor was over when I received 40 boxes of food storage the other day. A great little conversation ensued about why we store food etc. She said that it made her nervous, should she store more? I reminded her that during the aftermath of the last hurricane she offered to share with us and that we would of course share with them in times of need. I'd rather share than have someone come to steal and harm my family (not that I believe this neighbor would do that).
  11. I have a question about Tagalog (is that how you spell it?) Is it a written language as well as a spoken one? My son in law is part Filiapino and I know he can speak it but have never asked him about whether or not it is written.
