  1. As far as archeological evidence for Nephite and Lamanite civilizations in America goes, I typically go to the Farms site. I know lots of scholarly types discount the Farms site, however there is some great information on there. Another great resource is Jeff Lindsay's site. Even archeology has it's sketchy points. I suppose it just comes down to is if the evidence that is provided by LDS and non-LDS members is enough to solidify an opinion. As I stated before, even archeology can be a slippery slope. It changes all the time. According to Archeologist past roughly 11,500 yrs. ago the ancestors to the American Indian had traveled across a land mass from Siberia into North America thereby establishing these people as being the first "Americans". However in recent years new theories have came about that challenge that theory. I was watching a program on the history channel a while back. An archeologist/Paleontologist?, was at a dig. While going past the sedentary layers of what what believed to 11, 500 yrs. old, he had dug deeper. He was still finding artifacts that were dating 15,000 yrs. ago, and were not of Indian craft, how could this be? He found spear points that pre-dated that time. Archeologist dismissed his find all together because it did not agree with they're established accounts. They did not want to admit that they may have been wrong. They're ego supressed the evidence of a people who may have pre-dated the native American as we know today. Look at some of the archeology of Biblical times. What we think we knew yesterday, has changed. Just remeber, not too long ago everyone believed the world was as flat as a pancake....not too long ago we put a man on the moon. Today we have the internet. Ponder what possibilities we will have tomorrow.
  2. The Backyard Profesor series has really opened up my mind in so many different aspects of the LDS faith. He is truly amazing! Watching his videos happened to be one of my first encounters with the Church. They helped me intially begin to check into the Church. Almost two years later, and now a member. I don't think even he realizes how much he helps investigators and people like me.:)

    Embarassed?

That may very well be the case. I have come to find out today that my wife has refered to the Church as a "Cult". I am going to lay low about it. I figure I will just live the principles and remain prayerful about it. I figure once she sees the positive things about the Church, she will ease up a bit.
  4. Great post Rameumpton, This is a fascinating topic. I think your point about ancient historians being biased is very valid. You seem very up to date on a lot of this, have you watched any of the Backyard Professor videos on Youtube?

    Embarassed?

Hello everyone, Well I am a new member of the LDS Church. WE do not have alot of members in our little small town. I am also the only member in my family. A few days ago my youngest daughter, 10 yrs old. said something about trying to go to a Church. I advised her that she was more than welcome to go with me. She did not say much. The following day my wife, a non member, advised me that our children are "embarrased", about my belonging to the Church, but did not want to hurt my feelings about it. Well that kind of knocked me for a loop. I did not make a big deal of it because I do not want to scare the kids off from ever going to the Church. Just when I thought things were getting smoothed out this little roadblock happens. Has anybody else ran into this before? Thanks
  6. I was surfing and came across this movie by total accident. I rememberd the Dolls from way back, (yep, I am that old), while watching the movie I saw Arthur and about fell off my couch when it said that he was a member of the Church. It is funny when you look at old pictures of him and the dolls. The old then and now pictures speak a thousand words about the gospel, and should also speak to all of us that it never too late. I especially enjoyed the part when the two older ladies who worked with Arthur spoke of him. One thing that came across loud and clear, Arthur "Killer" Cane was a good Latter Day Saint. God bless him. His story is so inspirational.
  7. It is funny you brought this up. Just two days ago I was BBQ'ing at the house, my wife went to open the grill and take a look. Something inside of me...maybe a genetic response?..made me jump up and grab the tongs and nicely say, "Oh, I got that sugar"! But deep down inside I knew instinctively that it would be a violation of dude if I let her touch the chicken.
  8. I have not heard about the Hopi legend before, I will spend a good while googling that. One case I thought was interesting though. I had the privelege of meeting a Missionary who had been to South America near the Mayan temples. He and his family went there. While there he had met a tour guide whom he later found out to be a Church member. He approached the tour guide and asked "Where is it, I have to see it", He said the tour guide smiled and they began to trek a ways before they came to a wall. There on the wall ...a pictograph of a bearded man descending to the people from the heavens, then ascending again. Very exciting.!
  9. I don't know. I can get the jest of art without the nudity. It is kind of like when you meet a very nice looking woman and she has a wonderful disposistion, a great smile, a generous soul, I appreciate her beauty, but I don't have to see her naked to appreciate her.
  10. Hello everyone. I was just cruising the headlines and was saddend to see a couple that should concern a lot of folks. New Hampshire's Governor has signed a gay marriage bill making it legal for same sex marriages in that State. I am not sure what the consenquences will be, if any, as far as Churches, or Pastors who will not perform marital rights based upon religious objection. Remember a while back where there had been lawsuits filed against a couple of Churches for refusing to marry same sex couples. On another front, a case in Philadelphia, the Supreme Court has ruled that the Holy Bible cannot be read in a classroom for show and tell. The principal refused to let a child read it at the time, and a lawsuit was heard. However to no avail. There may possibly be an appeal. Not a good day for the home team, but these are just battles, not the whole war.
  11. I often wonder about this. I myself dress in a sport coat and slacks for Sunday, but my son...I could never ever get him in a shirt and tie.
  12. I would think that resale would be the way to go, however, in the spirit of giving, maybe giving them to a local shelter for the children? you know set it up for those who do not really want the candy bars but are willing to make a donation. Advise them that if they do not want the candy that the candy will be donated to a local womens center. Some of those women in shelters have they're children with them and I am sure the kids would love some candy.
  13. Hello everyone, It is official, as of five o'clock Sunday afternoon, I was baptized! It was a fantastic experience. Everyone there did they're part to amke it a great afternoon. <y wife was there too. I was really impressed by the ceremony. I cannot begin to express how I feel right now. I am going to get my confirmation next Sunday, and I am really excited about that. For those investigating the Church, I can only say that Baptism thru this Church is an amazing experience to me. I had been baptized many years ago at another Church, but this baptism just felt different. it felt more real. I can't help but to think that it is because the authority that was given. I will write back when I get my confirmation. I have met some wonderful people since I had started my quest for truth. Kay at the More good foundation, has been so inspirational. Dr. Brown, MrNirom, LDS9999, and so many others from you tube ahve been so helpful, as well as other members on this board, I thank all of you. Today has just been the best day ever!
  14. Hi, I wanted to thank everyone who responded to my baptism question. I had my last discussion with the Missionaries today. Good news! WE have set a tentative date for my Baptism on March the 29th. I have to do some double checking and make sure the Baptismal Font is availiable, but We are shooting for that date. Thanks for everyones help, It probably would not be happening without you.:)
  15. Hello everyone, It has been awhile since I was on this site. Much has transpired since then. A quick update. I have been taking the Missionary discussions. I will be taking my third this Friday. I have also been able to go to Church for the past several weeks. y wife has relented a little about her anti-LDS stance. So I beleive God is moving for the better in my life. I have a quick question. When you are baptized into the Church, how does that happen? Also every picture I have ever seen in regards to baptism into the Church shows everyone wearing white Is this a requirement? My local Chapel has the baptismal font, but will I be required to wear the white clothes as well? Thanks Rick

    LDS materials

Hi, I was wondering, is Desret Book the only place to get LDS magazines, books, and resources, or are they're other places to look. I live in Indiana and was curious if there might be an actual bookstore here. Thanks
  17. Hi Glenn, You are not alone in this. Several of us have faced similar situations. THe suggestions given are fantastic. Just take it slow with your wife. My wife has been exrememly anti-LDS in the past. But she is beginning to slowly loosen up a bit. Hope it all works out. Be prayerful, God has a plan.
  18. Hi, It is so cool that your wife will at least let you go to the Church. I ahve not even thought about asking mine. The local Chapel meets in Huntington Indiana on a temporary basis, THey are doing some renovations at the Chapel near where I live. I am hoping to be able to get over there and get some pictures o fhte Chapel. A "before and after", of the Chapel prior to completion. I guess they are projecting it to be finished sometim around May from what I hear. I am hoping that maybe the Wife will be O.K. with me going by then. I keep prayerful. From what I have been told a simple shirt an tie will do fine. I do not have a lot of dress clothes myself. But I do have a couple of white shirts and ties along with a couple pairs of Dockers for good measure. Heck I am excited for you! When you do get to go please let us know what your experience is will you? I would not think anyone would get on you about the ponytail. Let us know how it goes.
  19. HI, As most of you know I am in the process of investigating the Church. An issue has come up that I am having a real hard time with. In the past I have committed horrible sins. Many from childhood thru my younger adult years. I did not worry to much about it back then. I hardly believed in God then. Now I am older, 45 now. Looking back thru my life I am repulsed by who and what I used to be. I am not perfect now, that is not what I am saying. But in the past I have been a horrid wretched man, vile. A big problem was sexual sin. I don't want to go to heavy into it, but it was so wrong. Now I look back and I feel such guilt and remorse. I have prayed and asked God to forgive me for my sins. I have asked him to help me deal with the guilt of it. I have a problem with the guilt of it all. It seems to haunt me at every turn. Popping into my head. Can anyone relate to this? How do you handle it? It is really affecting me. Thanks
  20. Hi, Here is the first in the video series. YouTube - An Unlikely Mormon - The Conversion Story of Glenn Beck - (1/7) I do not know hw to do all that embed stuff, so hopefully this works. Sorry it took me so long to get back with you. Thanks, hopefully you enjoy this. Rick
  21. Hi, I just watched a great video on Youtube. It was posted in seven parts. Glenn is doing one of his live shows and tells about his Conversion. It really is great and powerful. Very touching and inspirational. A must see.
  22. I am investigating the LDS Church. I was going to the Church of the Nazarene which was a good Church. Upon seeking membership I found out that due to my Fraternal affiliation, I could not become a member of the Church. Dissapointed me, but I was not going to stop my affiliation, I thought that would be cowardice.
  23. Hi, No I saw it a couple of months ago by pure accident on Youtube. I saved it to my favorites and hurried home to show my kids. I watched it again with them. I sniffled again, and my kids just did not get ewhat I was trying to show them. The beauty of it. I often try to show them videos of songs that really strike me deeply. They just believe I am a sentimental old sap. Music is one of my weeknesses.
  24. I hate to admit this, but when I saw the Paul Potts video I began to actually cry, and I am a big guy! I am not even an opera kind of guy.It amazes me to no end. God has taken this un-assuming man, a regular, quiet type of man, and has given him this voice that touches the heart of every human being. How Great God is! How marvelous are his works. Paul is now on my playlist. And of course my kids think I am a total freak.
