  1. True, but from what I have read so far the child hasn't said anything yet about not liking the teacher. It is just the teacher being a jerk to the parent. Either way it seems like something that the parent and the teacher need to work out. I agree with you, not really a need to remove the child from the class.
  2. I disagree to a point with this, yes there are times where sometimes you just have to deal with a undesirable situation, but when it comes to teachers I think sometimes you have to look at what kind of a benefit you are getting out of it. I have had a few teachers in my education history who were just bad teachers. And what I learned from their classes was not as much as I could have. I did not sufficiently learn Algebra because of a teacher like this. And because of that I did poorly in my later math courses as well. When it comes to a teacher I think you really need to balance whether or not your child is learning what they need to know. If they are then fine they can deal with the annoying teacher, however if the teacher is not giving them the education that they need then I see no problem with moving them to a different class if it means that they will learn. I would rather have my child learn what they need to know for that year than lose a year of education just so they can learn how to deal with the idiots of the world.
  3. The idea of Sharia Law coming to the US rather frightens me. The whole idea that it would be legal in the US to burn or hang or even stone a woman for something. Or that honor killings would be legal as well. No matter the history of the customs it comes from the whole idea behind honor killings seems backward in my mind. There are some things in the world that make me wish that the Second Coming would come sooner.
  4. When I was a kid my parents were heavily against D&D and related things. However they did let my brother collect Magic cards. When I got married my husband finally talked me into gaming and we joined a group consisting of mainly LDS members. Our first group was awesome and when we moved we found another group that was made up of only LDS members. Our gaming nights were great because it got us our of our little hidey-hole appartment and out into the world where we socialized for the night. Some nights we never even got into the campaign, instead we all sat around talking and socialzing. It was great! I think when it comes to gaming and fantasy and such that you really have to take it in perspective. What are you getting out of it? What is your purpose for participating in it? Do you game for the social aspect, or are you focusing on the magic? If your purpose for participating in fantasy related things and activities is to learn more about magic and incorporate it into your life then yes you should probably stop. But if your reason behind why you participate in those things is because you enjoy the social aspect or you like the world that your imagination creates or you just like the fact that your imagination runs wild with fantasy themed things then I think you are just fine. I think some of these things can be taken too far. For example, though I have never tried it, I think LARP (Live Action Role Play) is taking it to the next level. Instead of saying what your character is doing you are actually acting out what your character is doing. I think reality and fantasy can be easily confused in such situations. And it is from such situations that we get stories of one person harming or killing another or even themselves. Moderation in all things is a good way of looking at it.
  5. The one I took was part of a college course and part of the enrollment fee was the cost of the test. I looked it up online though and found the official Myers Briggs Type Indicator website where they have a page listing resources for taking the test. Like I mentioned before, the offical test costs money, which is why many people take the online ones that people put together. Here is the link to the page: My MBTI Personality Type - Take the MBTI Instrument
  6. Pam, I almost said the same thing myself, same exact words ran through my head when I read his post.
  7. If you are comparing it to history then Memoirs is quite good in that respect. The author did a good deal of research in his writing of it and much of the details he puts in it are right on. After reading what has been said so far what is your opinion at this point? Are you thinking of trying a different book or are you planing on using Memoirs despite the sexual content?
  8. TOE bacon roll? That sounds even less appetizing than the original.
  9. I liked it myself, but it does describe the life of a Geisha, which is basically the equivalent of an escort in the US. Though sexual relations is not exactly a big part of being a Geisha is can be part of her work. In the book her virginity is bought by the highest bidder, it follows her life as a Geisha, which I found to be interesting. In Japan the word Geisha literally means Artist, Geisha see themselves as performing entertainers. Their main role is to entertain male guests with dance, playing of music, and serving of tea as well as pleasant conversation. They can choose if they want to have a more intimate relationship with their customers. The book follows the life of a girl who is sold to an Okiya (a geisha house) she is trained and becomes a famous geisha, it follows her progression and follows the inner politics and fighting that sometimes were part of the geisha life. As I said, I liked the book as I found it interesting. But geisha are very misunderstood especially by Western society. As I mentioned the book does speak of sex in it, so you really must decide for yourself whether or not you feel that doing a report on it would be appropriate.
  10. We can definately agree to disagree, however as long as you do continue to argue your point on this thread I will still probably continue to argue my point as well. It is probably best if the arguement part of this thread just stop as I think my arguements for my views pretty well cover the views of people for MMA and your views for people against MMA are pretty well covered by your points.
  11. Because everything the AMA publishes agrees completely with our beliefs as LDS members. Like this article they published in their journal about how Oral sex does not actually constitute sex. JAMA -- Would You Say You "Had Sex" If . . . ?, January 20, 1999, Sanders and Reinisch 281 (3): 275 So obviously if this well respected medical association says that this is so then as good LDS members we should believe what they have to say. We can now safely have oral sex without worrying that we are breaking the law of chastity because it is not actually sex. (insert sarcasm) The problem is though the AMA and many other medical associations have very good views on certain medical proceedures and medical views they are basing their views on the learnings of man. I have heard that there are medical experts who say that a glass of wine a day is good for you because of the antioxidents you recieve from consumption. Just because a medical association claims something does not mean that they are right. Just because they prove they are right about one thing does not mean they are right about everything. Thus when it comes to things medical associations come out with I will read what they have to say but take it with a grain of salt and do my own research to see if I agree with them.
  12. Nope, these were chicken-fried bacon. So breaded and deep-fried. The show we watched had deep-fried chicken, deep-fried turkey, deep-fried steak, deep-fried pickles, deep-fried bacon, deep-fried burger, deep-fried hot dogs, and then deep-fried anything from pizza to chocolate bars. Like I said, I felt like I had gained weight after just watching that episode.
  13. I don't know for sure, but I always had a sneaking suspicion that BYU-I was more strict than BYU-Provo because BYU-I is more heavenly. Just a guess there though.
  14. As a side note, my husband and I watched the Man vs. Food show once about different deep fried foods they have around the country, deep fried bacon was one of them. In fact they deep fry so many things that just watching the show made me feel like I had eaten something unhealthy.
  15. Sounds like a very interesting and promising MA, I look forward to hearing how it turns out for your family. I know my husband and myself are planning on getting involved in some form (or many forms) of Martial Arts once we are both in better shape and have kids we can take to train as well.
  16. The problem is you are relying on me to prove to you things I know to be true. But you are not willing to prove those things to yourself. I could call up BYU and ask them for a more detailed description of their Martial Arts course, but it would mean nothing for me to do so, because you obviously do not believe anything I have to say. Which is fine. But if you want to claim that I am wrong about something then please prove me wrong first, call up BYU and prove that I am completely wrong about the course. (By the way, I said nothing about boxing and BYU) When it comes to this topic it reminds me a good deal about book banning. I may read a book that I find to be uplifting and edifying and you may read the same book and find it to be foul and be of the opinion that no one should ever read it. Going out of your way to find a way to ban that book results in me not being able to have as much access to a book I find to be good. People have banned books for many years for many reasons. For example, when "Uncle Tom's Cabin" first came out it was banned because the way it portrayed African Americans was seen as "too favorable", now it is banned because it is seen to portray African Americans in a racist light. People can go out of their way to find bad things in anything, that does not mean that those bad things are there. You keep throwing Medical Associations at me, and I have shown that they were not basing their decision on relevant research and that they were not unanimous in their decision. You keep claiming that someone who is trying to be Christ like would never follow something as barbaric as MMA, and yet that is purely your opinion. It is like me saying that no true LDS member would ever drink anything with caffeine as it is against the word of wisdom. The problem is, that would be purely my opinion. There has been nothing said by any General Authorities that has banned members from caffeine. Similarly there has been nothing said by any General Authority that has banned members from MMA. Thus it comes down to our personal decision on whether we want to have either thing in our life. It all comes down to this: You may not understand where I am coming from and why I choose to be a fan of MMA, you may choose to have nothing to do with it, that is your choice. I do understand where you are coming from regarding MMA, but I don't agree with your views on the matter, I may choose to still be a fan of MMA, that is my choice. You have mentioned before that our choices often effect others. My choice to support MMA may have the effect to encourage others to get into the sport, it may help the sport to continue. I have no problem with that, that is my choice. Your choice to support banning MMA may have the effect of making it difficult or impossible for fighters who train in this form of Martial Arts to compete and improve their skills in a hobby of their choice. You obviously have no problem with this, that is your choice.
  17. I didn't have any problem with it either, but the discussion did bring up shorts and how you can wear them around BYU-Provo, and that just isn't the case at BYU-I. I actually still don't wear shorts much because I am so used to wearing just pants from my days at BYU-I.
  18. You can't wear shorts or even capris at BYU-I, they have a stricter dress code than BYU-Provo. They did when I went there 10 years ago and they still had it when my sister was out there just 2 years ago.
  19. Actually they don't. I grew up in Chicago-land area and my first year I was the only one out of all my roommates that did not get wind burn, because my skin was used to high winds and cold weather from living near the "Windy City". I still bundled up, I wore warm coats and scarves and hats and goretex boots. But then I like staying warm during the winter, cold hurts me, and I don't like pain. If he is still around take a class from Brother Samuelson. If he is still teaching a course on writing research papers take it. When I was there I loved his classes and his course on writing research papers completely changed the way I looked at writing them as well as my approach to them. Excellent teacher!
  20. Each to his own when it comes to books. There are some authors I really do not like and others that I do. But my appreciation of books is defined by what clicks with me and what doesn't. Some people like Steinbeck, I personally find his books too dull. Some people hate Orson Scott Card, I find much of what he writes to be interesting, and quite a few of his books to be very good. When it comes to Card I think you have to have a little bit of an appreciation of the bizarre, as much of what he writes is quite bizarre. I really did like his series about women from the Bible, he wrote a book about Sarah, Rebecka, and Rachel and Leah. I loved all of them. When it comes to Card's books I often take them with a grain of salt, some of them are fantastic, and others I could do without.
  21. I loved it there when I attended, but that was 10 years ago. It really depends on what your major is, I can tell you what teachers I loved when I was there, but I was an English major and if that is not your major then it probably would not help. What are your interests and what sort of classes are you looking at taking?
  22. My husband and I are currently going through the Wheel of Time series again, well he has finished it and I am on book 9 of 12. It is amazing how much of the plot line, and side plot lines and side side plot lines I had forgotten since the first time reading it. After that series I plan to read the Hunger Games trilogy.
  23. The problem though is that we do, or rather I have. I have read everything you have posted and have even looked up things ON MY OWN to see if what you are saying is correct. I have not demanded that you prove things to me to change my mind. And yet much has been provided to you. I have read articles you have linked, and looked into what the medical associations have said, I have done searches to see if what you are saying is correct. And every time I have done so I have not been convinced, I have found that the medical associations you mentioned came to the conclusion to ban on a split vote. I have found that there are and were medical professionals that argued against the ban and that this is based on the fact that the research that the ban was based on was old research and not done on recent fights or fight standards. As I have mentioned to you before I tend to try to see things from both sides. I have looked deeply into your side and have come to the conclusion that I still agree with my side of things. I don't know how much research you have put in to the MMA side of things. I do know you have attended some fights, but other than that I don't know how much you have looked into safety standards, or looked into what different medical professionals say who are pro-MMA. From your arguements it does not seem like you have done much of this.
  24. Anatess, The link is broken, or rather it does not save what you have looked up on the Florida constitution website. The fact this has not been brought up yet pretty much proves the point you were trying to make in your post.
