  1. My favorite one is "Making the Best of Basics: Family Preparedness" by James Talmage Stevens. It's an old book that I bought at least 10 years ago but I still use it all the time. It covers food storage (what and how much to buy and how to store and use your stored food), water storage, grains, breads, sourdough, sprouting, yogurt, cheese, fuel, supplement and other great things. It's a bit out dated but most of the information is still very valuable.
  2. We have an old Mil-Rite that can be used by electric or hand powder. The hand crank was an "add-on" and it didn't come with the mill. I bought it just in case of power outage. So far, I have not used the hand crank. The machine was bought second hand but it's still running very well. Retsel makes the best grain mills but their customer service probably is the worst amount all. As long as you don't need their customer service support, you're in good shape.
  3. Making your own is much cheaper. You can make wipes for basic cleaning; even something soft and smelly. Just prepare them and keep them in a tightly lidded plastic container. Make Your Own Wipe Solution

    Dried Milk

I had one that was open for almost two years. The powder turned yellow and the taste was awful. Another can I used for one year (covered and kept in our cool basement); it tasted fine. So I imagine maybe no more than two years?
  5. Yogurt is more friendly to your GI than milk. I am looking to make my own yogurt that has both pre and probiotics in it. Think I already have a pretty good idea on how to make it. I just have to stop by the health food store tomorrow to get something and will give it a try next week. Will keep you posted.
  6. I was a long distance runner and I used to teach running classes at BYU. I know you made your post a while ago. But if you're still interested feel free to ask questions.
  7. I too have sleep problems. I don't have problems falling asleep but staying asleep. I am in excellent physical condition. I work out every day and eat very clean but not extreme. I am a mom to a 7-year-old and I work a part time job but I don't believe I am stressed out. I have been to the doctor and have tried pretty much everything under the sun, except hormone replacement (I am close to menopause). Recently I am taking melatonin but it doesn't seem to do anything for me. I am very sensitive to drugs so my doctor orders half of a 3-mg pill. I may have to take the entire pill to see if my body can handle it. If this one fails, my doctor will have to send me to a sleep clinic for evaluation.
  8. Really? We use skim powdered milk all the time and the taste never bothers us. I am not sure where to get full fat powdered milk. I could imagine the non fat kind will last much longer compared to the full fat. Not sure though.
  9. I have been making my own yogurt for a few months now. I use a thermos but they don't always turn out the same. I don't mind if my yogurt is not very thick because I can always drain it for making yogurt cheese. I actually enjoying making my own yogurt. My question is, with all the hypes about pre and probiotics I am getting a bit confused. When I make my own yogurt (I use skim powdered milk from the Church and 1% milk from the store) do I still get the pre and probiotics as what they advertise on TV? Do I need to buy active culture from a health food store in order to get those?
