  1. Does the church still submit names from extraction programs? I know that many non-relative names have been done that way. With the current computer programs in place it should be fairly easy to discover if this was done by an individual or an extraction program. It's unfortunate. Heavengaurd, skippy answered your question, but I just want to reiterate that the issue is permission was not asked for. You can only submit names of your direct ancestors and their families. There are various rules about it that all submitters should become familiar with. HTH
  2. mikbone, I'd love to see a thread about Christ. He condescended from godhood to mortality to become the Redeemer of the world. The fact that he was God before his earthly ministry indicates to me He was always different from us.
  3. Did we review vs 17? Here it is again. 17 And now, as I, Moroni, said I could not make a full account of these things which are written, therefore it sufficeth me to say that Jesus showed himself unto this man in the spirit, even after the manner and in the likeness of the same body even as he showed himself unto the Nephites. I'm leaning towards spirit body that looks just like the physical body. However, I still think the questions in posts 36 & 37 are worth pondering. It is also interesting to note that the Lord's finger touched the rock.
  4. Of course whatever the substance of His body, it had to be immortal and of an eternal nature. Here is a question. If all things eternal have no beginning, how can we keep our (perfected) bodies for eternity? ie. if it has a beginning it has to have an end. ETA: Nothing in these passages intimate it being a vision. Especially if BOJ was "ministered" to. Don't ya think? It seems pretty intimate and real to me. As always, I'm open to being wrong.
  5. "and he ministered unto him even as he ministered unto the Nephites" vs 18 I'm gonna say he must have been privy to the same wonderful teachings that could not be written in 3 Nephi. ETA: I think these are very important teachings. Read Ether 4. The writings of the Brother of Jared still need to come forth. Here is what WE have to do first! Ether 4:6 6 For the Lord said unto me: They shall not go forth unto the Gentiles until the day that they shall repent of their iniquity, and become clean before the Lord.
  6. Thanks! So, then we go back to the mystery of what Moroni held back. What more happened?
  7. I reread this a couple days ago. It is not very clear. It needs to be read in context-vs 6-21. Because it also says that no man had ever seen the Lord before this (Br of Jared) and I would have thought Enoch and probably others would have seen him... And it is very confusing because it speaks of "flesh and blood" and then says vs 9 "...I shall take upon me flesh and blood..." Very confusing to me.
  8. Justice, I read it awhile back and I second that it is worth reading.
  9. For fun, this is what googling got me. ;P I'm not gonna trust a memory recalled that long after the fact, but it is interesting.
  10. You might also be interested in this blog: Gay LDS Actor It might give a helpful perspective on what it is like for one person going through this.
  11. Closest my ward has come to this is a transgendered woman. She came often and people were nice. Most people don't even know. I haven't seen her in awhile, though, I should find out what happened... I'm sure every ward will react differently. I'm sure a few in my ward would react negatively just based on comments that have been made in the past. So, I think she should be prepared to face some criticism...JMHO Oh, we also have a couple people who go out and smoke at church. They are still welcome. We do try to discourage them from doing it on church property, though. Church is a hospital for sinners!!!
  12. Sweet. I have imaginings of the 3 Nephites knocking on my door sometimes... They play an important role in the Last Days.
  13. The Nauvoo Temple had 2 fires and was leveled by a tornado (all but one wall I think). The stones were taken away to be used in other homes and buildings in the area.......at least that is what I remember from my reading.
  14. Sorry, why can't you ask for more help from your bishop? We just had a leadership training meeting about helping people and the call was given to search out and help those in need within our wards. We are no longer just to "teach a man to fish" now we should try to give them a pole and catch the first fish for them!
  15. My advice: Talk to your bishop. Show him your bills and your budget. Tell him about the emergency you had. You may need temporary assistance to pay everything. Then, check out The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey! Love that book! You can also go to his website and listen to his broadcast. You can try to lower some of your bills by calling the companies. We did this for our car insurance and Comcast and saved money on both. You can also try to sell some stuff on Craigslist. That is how we paid for groceries last month.
  16. The Kirtland Temple was defiled, like you've mentioned. A huge apostacy occured at that time in LDS history. I think that it was even used for animals at one point. The Kirtland Temple was awesome. The saints were "endowed with power from on high." There was a great pouring out of the spirit and they experienced "a time of pentacost." I believe that the Kirtland Temple was one of the most important temples ever built. I'm sure when it was remodeled it would have been rededicated (by the RLDS church).
  17. I agree. There is a very different "feel" to contention vs. putting forth differing ideas and opinions. I enjoy learning from other opinions and understandings and interpretations. I don't like when it disinigrates into personal jabs and veiled insults.
  18. ((((hugs)))) I am so sorry you are going through this!
  19. In addition to palerider- Make sure you are open with your daughter that she can come to you and tell you if anything is ever said or done that makes her upset or uncomfortable. This applies to school, church, friends houses, everywhere. I had an adult (a visitor, no less) put their hands on my child and tell him to shut up. This happened during primary and I only heard "your son got in trouble today" until my son told us the whole story! Luckily, we were able to turn it into a positive learning experience and he now understands that some adults do not know how to act appropriately. I'm really not trying to give you more worries. I just know that as mothers we need to protect and empower our children. Chances are high that everything will be just fine. But, our children are going to come across mean people in their lives so we might as well prepare them for it! ETA: Don't be afraid to drop in from time to time to check things out! That might ease your fears.
  20. I just want to pop in to add my opinion on one thing. A marriage outside the temple also consists of a covenant. It is also sacred.
  21. Thanks palerider. Maybe you could give some tidbits of insight for those of us who aren't able to purchase the book. Or others who have read it.
  22. As some of us come to a full knowledge of church history and things like "seer stones" and such we often get very concerned. With that in mind I would like us to have a discussion of things in the Bible, BoM, etc that are unusual or "occult" like. Here are the definitions of occult from dictionary.com: Now, after reading the definitions of occult it seems like we usually misuse the word. I feel like most people use the word occult to say things of the devil or witchcraft/priestcraft. Maybe that's just me, though. Now here are some things that are portrayed in the scriptures as being good, but could clearly be called "occult" by most-at least by today's standards. You can find some helpful info over at religioustolerance.com about occultism in the Bible. *Moses turning the ? river to blood *Moses turning the staff into a serpant *Moses getting water from the rock w/staff *Moses parting the Red Sea *Putting blood on the doorway for Passover *People healed by looking at the serpant on the staff *Animal sacrifice *Building alters for worship purposes *The guy who was told to wash in the pool 7 times to be healed *Urim and Thummim *Casting lots and dice throwing *Jesus turning water into wine *Jesus walking on water *Jesus healing a blind man with spit/mud on eyes *Samson believed he had strength from not cutting his hair *Several instances of cursing (though it's up to the reader to decide if these are bad or not) I found this one especially interesting: Daniel, the prophet, was employed for many years in Babylon as the chief occultist to the king. He was supervisor "of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans and soothsayers". See Daniel 5:11 Then, of course, we have the BoM *Liahona *Brother of Jared and the rocks *Urim and Thummim Regardless of whether these stories are literal or more symbolic they would probably be considered suspect by most people if they happened today. It does appear to me that God often allows us to use objects or unusual means to bring about miracles, revelation or his words. For me the bigger question becomes, what is the difference? How can we tell the difference between the "bad" occult and the "good" occult?
  23. Pam, check this book out over on google. Sisters in Spirit. You can read a bunch of it online. There is at least one journal entry by Brigham Young that says Emma was the first woman to receive the "fullness of the priesthood." The Relief Society minutes use the words "ordained." They were ordained and set apart to heal the sick and comfort the sorrowful. I find it interesting that JS is quoted as saying "I now turn the key to you" when we usually use the word "key" in reference to the priesthood and authority [RS Minutes]. Also, D&C 25:7 states speaking of Emma: And thou shalt be ordained under his hand to expound scriptures, and to exhort the church, according as it shall be given thee by my Spirit. Anyway, the sisters never claimed to have been ordained to the priesthood. Obviously the lines were much blurrier then, though. They had much more power and authority. It was watered down over the years until it was squashed.
  24. Life is about faith and God's plan for YOU. A-train said it-Don't let anyone/thing come between you and God. He'll guide you. It's very hard to stop relying on other people to tell us what to think or how to worship. But it's the only way to have a relationship with God.
