This is a good forum for any "Mormons seem weird" topics you may have as well.   It's possible that your spiritual experiences may lead you to conclude that the CoJCoLDS is Christ's church, and where you should be.  If that's the result, there can be a little culture shock, because our church is more than a church, it's a lifestyle.  And there are some interesting cultural oddities that come with the lifestyle.  Some we can explain doctrinally, others we tend to be embarrassed by. :D

@DeseretdogSince you are investigating you might not be familiar with acronyms.  CoJCoLDS is: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

If it might interest anyone, this short (3 minute) video features Apostle Lachlan Mackay of Community of Christ sharing his feelings regarding this transaction.

I'm not sure why this seems important to me. Maybe just to remind us that, while our branch of the Restoration is celebrating today, another branch of the Restoration is probably experiencing some mixed emotions.

I think that's why the Church is being very selective in what they say and how they say it. They realize that this is a sad time for those of the CoC.

  3. I just read your answer about changes to the endowment and I found it helpful. Thank you. However, how do you explain the elimination of the execution of the penalties? Those were not instructions, rather, they were part of the ordinance. When I hear the explanation of the recent changes, my memory of the pre-1990 endowment trouble me.

  4. Is it wrong to look up the words to the temple endowment online when I can’t make it to the temple and I want to study the temple wording in depth? We’re not allowed to have a pencil and paper during an endowment session. I always have so many insights and forget them by the time I leave the temple. So I tried looking at an unbiased site with the endowment wording (omitting the parts that were not supposed to talk of) but my husband said that was very wrong and I was trifling with sacred things.

  5. Hey gramps!

I read about how only Jesus life was the only acceptable currency to pay off our sin and not us. And that we have no valid currency in heaven to pay off our sin. But why didn’t we have any acceptable currency to pay off our sins? Was it because we are sinners? Or something else?

  6. Gramps,
I see Nephilim is made up of Nephi and lim, any significance?
How did Nephilims or giants survive the flood?
Is it possible one of the three wives of the three brothers of Noah has those genes?
David and Goliath was one of my favorite stories as a kid and I believe it truly happened. How big were these giants?
    Thanks Scott

  7. Dear Gramps, I've had something come up in my mind, rock music, my favorite genre of music, some argue that it's plain evil and should be banned, others don't really bother and embrace it, I'm wondering if i'm on a bad path because of rock music specifically the kind of the "Guilty Gear" Video game series. Please do respond ASAP.

    Have a good day/night.

I don't mean to speak for Grunt.  But I'll add my 2 cents.

Maybe vengeful is not the precise word for it.  It would be almost sinister.

    If we believe:

    • In Ex Nihilo creation.  This means that God purposefully created every single aspect of our being, good and evil.
    • God is all knowing from the beginning to the end of time
    • He has set up the universe in one giant, perfectly synchronous clock that will simply move the way He pre-designed it to move.

    Then we must conclude:

    • We don't really have free will.  God made us exactly as we are when we're born.  He gave us the circumstances to which we would react and by which we learn good or evil.  And we react in perfect harmony of God's predictions/desires for our eternal destiny.
    • By our experience here which God designed, some people will go to hell.  God wills it so.  He created them for the purpose of going to hell.  This is the concept that we might call sinister.

That is why we don't believe in ex nihilo creation -- in addition to the fact that we have prophecy that tells us differently.

Creatio ex nihilo is actually the belief of creating something out of nothing. Which is why we don't believe in it.

Yes this was the part I was confused about. Most mormons say they are Christians, but everyone else I talked to says they are not. I'm not say who is or isn't right I'm trying to figure that out.

I hadn't realized I placed conditions on responses but knowing me I probably did accidentally. Very sorry about that. Unfortunately I don't have a way to contact a missionary. Thank for responding though.

If you go to this website, you can request to have missionaries contact you.  https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/comeuntochrist

Meanwhile, everyone whose family has been eating stuffing cooked inside a turkey for longer than you've been alive, without getting food poisoning from it, please raise your hands. :)

    "can" != "will"

Cook the thing right and you've got nothing to worry about.  (We're seriously in need of another world war to set our worry priorities straight. :P )

We quit doing it years and years ago because of the warnings regarding stuffing turkeys.
