  1. Check this month's Ensign for a nice article about this by President Monson. You might talk to your bishop as well, he'll have to interview you for before you can get your patriarchal blessing.
  2. You can also chat with a missionary online who will help you get in contact with the local missionaries. This is what I did and it worked out really well. We had our first meeting at the local library and after that, we met at the chapel several times.
  3. I'm the only Mormon in my family and when I was baptized I invited my father and a non-Mormon friend (they both came).
  4. You can try this website - : CleanPlayDVDS.com is now open under new ownership. I've never bought from them nor do I know anyone who has, but it might be worthwhile.
  5. I was baptized last September, 13th. I spoke with my bishop before Christmas and he told me he would like me to wait until I had been a member for 6 months so that I would have a better understanding of the Church and be able to better appreciate the blessing.
  6. I was 30 years old and stationed in West Germany at the time. It was really satisfying knowing that I had been able to play a very small part in the process. And Moksha - Ich bin Berliner translates into I am a Berliner(one who is from Berlin), Ich bin ein Berliner translates into I am a jelly-filled pastry(similar to our jelly-filled doughnuts and made in the style prevalent in Berlin).

Looks good so far! Good luck with the website!!
  8. I just got one from and when I searched the member name, it said there was no member with that name. It was rita200 - I don't remember seeing this username before.
  9. Welcome to the site! I'm looking forward to conference - it will be my first one!

    hi

Привет, I studied Russian 20 years ago and I can try to help if you need to use Russian. This is a great place to learn!
  11. Dance, I was baptized 2 weeks ago and I stopped drinking coffee in the second week of August. I had been drinking coffee for over 30 years, would drink it all day and into the evening. I understand the cultural aspect, it's hard at first to go to a restaurant and NOT order coffee! It CAN be done, however. I am honestly getting better rest now and it is amazing that it was as easy for me to quit as it was. Building your faith, studying scriptures, being with good friends who understand - all those can and will help you give up coffee as long as you have a deep-down desire. BTW - if you drink as much as I used to, you will likely experience some headaches for a little while but the more restful sleep more than makes up for it!
  12. Congrats maybeinNH!!! I'm getting baptized next Sunday and I know how you feel! I wish you all the best!

    Farve again

As a Vikings fan I just want everyone to know that we did NOT get a vote on his hiring. He would still be retired if we had!
  14. Nice job on the website. A lot of helpful links all in one place!
  15. In the mid to late 1980's while I was stationed in West Germany, I lost two friends to cancer. They were both Germans (Willi was in his late 80's, Fritz was mid 40's) and their socialized medical care would only do very little as far as trying to cure them. I had wondered why health insurance was still being sold in Germany and I found out why. If you want the best or even adequate at times medical care you still needed insurance. There are private health care facilities in Germany and I suspect all over Europe and many other places where socialized medicine is practiced, you get better care but you need to have insurance or cash or both.
  16. Most, if not all, states have a program involving National Guard service where you can get free tuition at a state college/university if you join the respective state's National Guard. I don't say this light-heartedly - it is still military service and that is not something that everyone can handle, it's just an option worth considering. All jobs are not combat related and many have direct correlation to civilian jobs.
  17. Thanks for your input! I learned to play euchre while I was at IU for 2 years. Unfortunately, that was a bad time in my life and it seems euchre is about the only thing I did learn while there in Bloomington. FYI - those of us from WV are mountaineers, hillbillies are from a Los Angeles suburb!
  18. When I convert to LDS do I have to stop playing canasta, euchre, and pinochle? Also, how much trouble will I be in when I root for the WVU Mountaineers over BYU? (First question is serious, second not so much.)
  19. Just some trivia FYI - Chai is the Russian word for tea
  20. Musicme, Just my perspective - I'm not a Mormon(yet) but I am seriously considering joining for the serious discussion/debate/discourse that I feel is part of the church experience with Mormons. I have only a limited knowledge of the faith as yet but one of the most important things that has drawn me in is the search for truth and the need to continue learning that I have seen while reading about the church. It is unfortunate that you feel out of place because you can't have truly open discussions with those at your place of worship, I am certain that I will not agree with most people about every subject but I hope that my difference of opinion will not keep me from learning more about other peoples point of view. I hope that things will work out for you and as long as you continue to follow the standards of the church I think you'll be fine!
  21. Hello all, I'm a newbie with an interest in joining the Mormon faith. I have known and worked with a few Mormons in the past and have had great respect for them as individuals and as members of their religion. I was raised in a Protestant home and have considered myself a Christian for some time although I have not been an active member in a church for over 30 years. For some unknown reason, I googled LDS a couple of days ago and have been enjoying some really great reading. I'm at Chapter 14 of First Nephi and I've also read some history and have read a bunch of good articles at Jeff Lindsay's website. I look forward to getting some good input here and hope to keep learning!
