  1. Deep doctrine is stuff like understanding why emigrants to Utah during the reformation period were required to be rebaptized in order to Maintain standing in the Church. Or blood atonement. Or the meaning of Adam God theory and why BY kept pushing it.
Or why certain groups were not able to hold the Priesthood before 1978. No reasons have been mentioned, although many have been posited by Church higher ups over the years.

Something I have struggled with is why God allows bad things to happen to good people. Why do children get cancer and where one will turn out OK, another will die - and both sets of parents are Christians praying their hardest for healing? There is obviously a lot more to that question, but I think you get the idea.

Rain falls on the just and the unjust equally.  Why shouldn’t bad things happen?  How does that help?  Adversity can build strength.
I think it helps to think about our lives as a series of problems to be solved. It’s in solving our problems we achieve our greatest satisfaction. Of course, some may be insoluble.  The role of religion is to teach about solutions as well as give us consolation when things are at their lowest.

Hours earlier, on a Wednesday night conference call with supporters and donors, a fired-up Biden said: “I'll be damned if we're gonna lose this nomination, particularly if we're gonna lose this nomination and end up losing an election to Donald Trump.”

No matter whether you’re left or right, I’m just gonna come out and say it:  Joe Biden is too stupid to be president of the US.

I can remember when most members lived in Utah (this was back in the day of road shows, gold and green balls and church wide basketball and softball tournaments - now most members do not even live in the USA and have no idea what on earth is a road show or gold and green ball.

My current experience mirrors yours, but here in California.  Young people simply cannot afford houses in my area, and consequently there are few.  Even renting in a decent area requires close to a six figure income.

So Wards have hollowed out and are shrinking.  In other parts of the State this is not true.  There is a building in our stake that was designed for four Wards anticipating what was thought to be future growth.  The building is gigantic.  One ward is in attendance.

I think the article has little to do with "church" culture and a lot to do with Utah Valley culture.

I have my own list if anyone cares to read:

    1) Joking about trying to avoid the bishop or trying to get out of a talk or calling.

    2) Saying that it is acceptable that you are consistently 15 minutes late to 9 am church when you have kids (same family continues to be 15 minutes late to 11:30 am church when the time changes... speaking from personal experience)

    3) Focusing on exceptions and unique cases instead of principles of the gospel / leaving long disclaimers at the end of testimonies to prevent offending anyone. (ie "God wants all worthy able men to serve missions, but if you *insert 5 minute explanation as to why missions aren't for everyone*")

    4) to-do lists are evil and Pharisaical. The higher law is to just be good and you will naturally do everything you need to.

    5) Accusing anyone of hypocrisy or being judgmental. (These are just ways of redirecting personal failing that have been brought to light. And I am not sure we really understand what hypocrisy REALLY means)

    6) Home Teaching was this terrible program that needed to change (it wasn't, it was a fantastic program that members failed at).

    7) Desiring and enjoying leadership callings is bad. Aspiring to leadership is bad. (We should all be aspiring to Godhood and seeking opportunities to serve a grow along the way)

eight*) Dinner foods cant be eaten for breakfast (yes they can)

    9) Complaining about church culture is cool. (It's not)

*Every time I typed "8 )" it turned into 😎

Some people need to get out more.  Not all of us live in Utah.  In fact, I think Utah Mormons are a minority in the Church.

Some of us live in California, Texas, New York and even (Wait for it) foreign countries!!!

As far as I understand it, you are correct. Charities are required to submit form 990 to the IRS which becomes public. However, I also understand that churches are exempt from this requirement. If it was as easy as finding/requesting a form 990, then I expect that any good tax attorney (like Brunson) or historian (like Quinn) would have gone there first. That these experts are claiming that there is no 990 for the Church to be found suggests to me that the Church has not filed a 990.

The Church is not required to file any forms regarding tithed funds. There is, nor will there be any government reporting regarding these.

No!!! She does not!!!!  Pocahontas earned a place of honor in our history and does not deserve to have her good name and reputation so desecrated.

    OOOHH....You meant Pocahontas' good name...….

I assume that you are in full support of the use of Pocahontas?   When I was in the army I objected to the use of many pharisees that were popular among the service men.  You may call it political correctness - I call it incorrect references and bad use of language.  It is not true or honest - Another term for such use of language would be a lie.  Do you not ever tell you own children not to use certain words and phrases - also known as swearing?  Do you teach you children to lie or support lies if it is politically expedient?

One of the greatest concerns I have with the political divisions I am seeing is the willingness to alter one's standards in defending their own or in criticizing their opposition.

It was not DJT that used affirmative action for personal benefit.

    She deserves her epithet.

The real problem the so called progressives have with DJT is his intense push back of all their memes and PC. The opposition has not done that before, and they don’t like it.

Thanks for the responses.  I ask because I've had several experiences that I found "odd".  I guess, perhaps, I just take my faith too seriously?   The last experience was meeting someone while out that was having a beer and while discussing religion said he was a "Mormon".  He loved the faith, it seemed.  However, he hadn't been to Church, read the scripture, or apparently cared about his covenants in years.  Nice enough guy.  Had a good talk.  But it was just odd to be sitting there with him while he told everyone else in the group about how great "Mormonism" is.

This is not unusual.  There are many believers that due to personal reasons don't attend church.  But they do consider themselves believers.  We had a member in our ward that was a life long smoker, couldn't give it up.  He came to church every Sunday, and was a very faithful home teaching companion. Oddly, his wife was not a member.

I belong to a club of several hundred people.  Because of past leadership roles, I know many members personally.  Some have not been to a club meeting in years, but still consider themselves to be loyal members.

    And they are.

  10. "We Must Confess Our Sins

Confessing our sins is very important. The Lord has commanded us to confess our sins. Confession relieves a heavy burden from the sinner. The Lord has promised, “I, the Lord, forgive sins, and am merciful unto those who confess their sins with humble hearts” (D&C 61:2).

We must confess all our sins to the Lord. In addition, we must confess serious sins—such as adultery, fornication, homosexual relations, spouse or child abuse, and the sale or use of illegal drugs—which might affect our standing in the Church, to the proper priesthood authority. If we have sinned against another person, we should confess to the person we have injured. Some less serious sins involve no one but ourselves and the Lord. These may be confessed privately to the Lord. "

You have done none of the above sins, and are now remorseful,  Presumably you have repented and confessed to the Lord.  Don't make more of this than it is.  I personally wouldn't take the chance of destroying a family unit by "baring all".  I don't think you've done anything that bad, really.  Not a lot more than a routine fantasy. many of us may have.  The point is that you have stopped.  And in twenty or so years, no one will ever know the difference.  You can then joke with your husband about the so called emotional affair you had back in the day.

And no, if you take my advice, you are not going to hell.  Where do people get these ideas...………….

  11. Delete all evidence of this activity and never tell anyone.

You have a responsibility to your children that overrides all other considerations. You need to keep your family intact, if possible. The fact is, you did not have any sort of physical relationship. Over time, any guilt you may feel will be wiped away by the fine family you will raise. You will not go to hell by taking my advice  That’s total nonsense  By raising a great family you will have repented

Dont do anything stupid like talking to your bishop. He will likely have you tell your husband, destroying all.

Go to an independent counselor if you must talk this out with somebody.

  12. I certainly don’t consider card counting as cheating at all. All good card players use memory skills to get an edge on their opponents, no matter what the game. That being said, it IS against the casino rules, and a player can be ejected from play by using the technique. Therefore, I would avoid doing it.

On another note, the idea that playing a game where one has an edge of even one percent and calling it gambling, is incorrect. If there is an edge, the person with that advantage will eventually win all.  This is how casinos make their money. The casino edge at a craps table is as low as <1%.  Still, the casino always wins.

  13. As a matter of fact, the opposite of peace is war.

Stress is different and just part of life. IMO life is a series of problems to be solved. And no matter the nature of the problem, stress is necessarily involved. Because thinking  and actions will have to be done.

  14. I just spent a week traveling with three Brits on a trip through Europe. All are befuddled by the Brexit mess.

AFAIK, the referendum function in the U.K. is advisory, not binding. The consensus among my friends is that the whole thing was mishandled from the beginning.  Boris is trying to comply with the vote whether there is a so called “deal” with the EU or not. The reality seems to be that no one is at all sure where any of this all leads politically, hence the appearance of anarchy.

The latest season on Everyone’s favorite TV show was released a few hours ago. Just a Recap from past seasons. The dems failed to prevent Trump from gathering all the electoral college stones, completing the Presidency gauntlet, then he snapped away his competition as well as the dem majority in the Supreme Court. Later, they failed to beat him with their own “Russian Collusion” gauntlet. Well now Trump slipped up and now the dems are uniting for one last attack to right the wrongs that have been done. An official impeachment inquiry has been launched.

what do you predict future episodes will hold?

on a serious note. I haven’t done much research into the claims and so far only liberal media (redundant?) has picked up on it so obviously it all sounds terrible.

No one truly believes there is any presidential wrong doing at all in the so called Ukrainian phone call. But it’s good press and another reason to keep after the president. Just like supposed Russian conspiracy.

Behind closed doors, the Dems all laugh at the joke.
