mrmarklin reacted to Just_A_Guy in LDS Missionary arrested
If Utah had been a mandatory-clergy-reporter state, this guy would never have come forward at all.
As it was, he was able to make a confidential confession to his leadership; and by continual ministry, the Church was able within five months to get this kid into a position where he ultimately came forward of his own accord and, in the presence of his own criminal defense attorney, not only made a full confession but turned the computer over for further analysis. In the meantime, one presumes his bishop was very careful not to put him into a calling that gave him access to children.
But for clergy privilege, this guy would have been completely undetected (and his victims wholly unidentified) down to the present moment. Scenarios like this are exactly why many states offer clerical privilege: in the long run, it lets us cast a wider net than we otherwise could; particularly in states where confessional religion is so pervasive.
Oh, by the way: the juvie court system deals with literally hundreds of teenaged boys who did everything Alyk did and more. They do their time, and at age 21 they are released—no criminal record, no sex offender registry, nothing to warn the community what they have done and what they are capable of. If we’re going to give a pass to democratic governments whose whole raison d’être is to find predators and remove them from the community, then it’s inconsistent for us to get righteously indignant when a church that openly values repentance, forgiveness, and confidentiality is going to take advantage of perfectly legal processes in furtherance of those values.

Random thought: Americans would use less toilet paper if we didn't eat so much.

Or perhaps, getting it back is always harder than giving it up.
In other words, we can vote ourselves into Socialism, but we have to shoot our way out of it.

mrmarklin reacted to Just_A_Guy in I am a widower planning on marrying again in the temple but my kids aren't accepting of it. Please give me some advice
It sounds to me like even before introducing this other woman into your kids’ lives, there were some underlying issues that perhaps might usefully be addressed with some family therapy.
My gut feelings are very akin with what @Fether wrote; but I also firmly believe that as a single parent one’s primary obligation is to one’s minor children, even if that adversely affects one’s own need for companionship. Yes, it sounds like your kids are being unfair and potentially manipulative—in short, your children are behaving like children (which they are), and like hurt/scared/traumatized children (which they also are). That’s just a burden we carry, as parents. They may be more willing to engage in some give-and-take if/when they see us sincerely ready and willing to do the same.
Once the kids are out of the house, we can pursue our affairs of the heart with impunity; and if the kids don’t like it then they can go live their lives. Until then . . . I probably wouldn’t force the stepmom thing.

Rain falls on the just and the unjust equally. Why shouldn’t bad things happen? How does that help? Adversity can build strength.
I think it helps to think about our lives as a series of problems to be solved. It’s in solving our problems we achieve our greatest satisfaction. Of course, some may be insoluble. The role of religion is to teach about solutions as well as give us consolation when things are at their lowest.

No matter whether you’re left or right, I’m just gonna come out and say it: Joe Biden is too stupid to be president of the US.

I think that the reason the Lamanites started having darker skin was because of their inter-marriage with the Native Americans that were already here when they arrived, e.g. The Adena, Olmecs, Toltecs, etc.

So according to this article, the church made a mistake in the printed Come Follow Me manual for the Book of Mormon followed by a correction in the digital version. I honestly don't see the the mistake. While the wording in the digital version is a lot better, there is nothing incorrect about the original. If there is a problem with racial insensitivity, the problem is with the Book of Mormon itself. Not the manual.

That's so 5 minutes ago. It's about Meghan now refusing to move to California until Trump is ejected from the White House.

mrmarklin reacted to Just_A_Guy in Revelation that separates spouses
I can’t say that God would or wouldn’t reveal something like that to a man. The fact that *any* man would go so far as to tell his wife that he had received such a revelation, however, makes me question a.) how did he think you’d take something like that? b.) why would he tell you that? What does he expect you to do about it in the here-and-now? Does he expect it to be a valid excuse for behavior you might otherwise object to? and c.) what made him think he might come out of such a conversation alive?
The sheer bone-headedness of saying something like that to one’s wife, combined with his statements about being down and isolated, makes me think there may be some mental health issues at play here.

mrmarklin reacted to Just_A_Guy in Moving away when you're the Bishop
I will just add that growing up in California, I had a couple of church friends whose parents (separate families) sent them to Utah to “straighten them out” and get them away from bad influences at home.
It never worked; the kids just sought out more of the same in their new location.
Obviously, nothing I say here should trump whatever promptings you receive from the Spirit. But I wouldn’t look at relocation as some panacea, or assume that your son would be okay “but for” this or that particular person. There’s a very good chance that he finds something about this lifestyle alluring, and IMHO it needs to be further evaluated and addressed—don’t assume you already know everything that’s going on here.
