  1. LDS have a cannery in Carrolton, Tx. I have used them several times and even as a non LDS member they were very nice. I think there is one in Huston as well.
  2. I have a small amount of farm land in Illinois. I was talking to a cousin that still lives there and he said that one 40 acre field on his farm varied from 10 bushels to 175 bushels per acre. It averaged 140 per acre when it should have yielded 200+ per acre. On my land one field yielded 200 per acre and right across the road it was 140 per acre. The only difference was a 5 day difference in the corn variety growing season. One field had a sprinkle with higher humidity during pollination. I did OK on one field and slightly over break even on the other. 10 miles in any direction they are looking at 100 bushels per acre. Even at $7-8 per bushel no one is going to get rich.
  3. I have a lot of allergies. Years ago I was taking allergy shots to try to build up my immune system. I had a reaction to one of the shots. This was made worse as I am a slow reactor (normal folks have the reaction in 10 min, it takes me 30 min) I lived in the country about 5 miles from the Dr office. By the time I got home I was starting to have problems breathing. I told my mom to call the Dr and tell him I was coming back in. She wanted me to get my father to drive me. By this time I knew I was in deep S##T! I called for him once and when I did not get an immediate response I left. Driving 80 MPH on gravel roads and 100 on the asphalt. I got to the office and was starting to see spots in front of my eyes. I got to the door and he laid me down and gave me a shot in the vain of Adrenalin. My father got there 10 min later and I asked the doctor if I would have still been alive and he said no. I can feel the pain of the posters son's teacher! It was VERY close in my case.
  4. The army has done studies on the life of pills and found that many are good for years past their expiration dates. There was one antibiotic that did go bad and could actually become harmful but I can not remember what it was right now. Most of the drugs that I take now are generic so I have managed to build up a 1 year supply of most of them.
  5. I am not a member of LDS but I am a member of the church of common sense. I store food and am on this and other LDS websites because I do not want to go hungry nor to depend on someone's charity to stay alive. Rice and wheat properly stored will remain good for 25-30 years. I am old enough that I will never live long enough to see that date but my son will. My storage food, which is all dated, will be passed on to him when I go.
  6. I finally got around to doing this. I purchased some 1/2 gal Ball jars and did 17 jars. I left about 1 1/2 inch of head space and used coffee filters on the first 2. They were fine and I could see no fogging so the rest I just left the head space. I did wipe off the rim really good but did not heat the lids. Hope they stay sealed!! 2 days later and they are still sealed.
  7. We were having a lot of problems with pantry moths. Tried all sorts of sticky traps and although they caught a lot we still had them. I had read about the freezing to kill bugs and tried that with the bagged dog and cat food that were kept in and near the pantry. It just dawned on me about 2 months ago that the pantry moth problem was gone. I think that every time we bought a new bag of dog or cat food we reinfected the area. It really worked!
  8. Try Amazon.com. They have all sorts of bags and related stuff.
  9. I have never understood how anyone could think that disarming the victims would make the world a safer place. If it comes to it I will not let anyone into my safe harbor that is not willing to protect him or herself with deadly force if needed.

Have your doctor, if he is willing, write 2 or more 3 month prescriptions. Try to get generic drugs as you are going to have to purchase the extra ones with cash. You will have to go to separate pharmacy with each set of prescriptions.
  11. We had been having a bad moth problem in our pantry. I read about the insect egg's and freezing them so I started doing that to the dry bagged cat and dog food before putting them in the pantry. While we still have an occasional moth I would guess that 95% of the moths are gone. We had always kept the small amount of bagged flour that we had to make gravy in the freezer, I now will start putting everything from grain in there first.
  12. Alas, I have progressed not one bit. I was to Sam's only once and forget to get the powdered milk. Since I have the #10 cans it is not a high priority but it does need to get done. Raven I like your idea of putting something on the outside of the lid. I may try cutting one out of the large coffee filters that I have. I have a bunch and plan on using them for a pre filter for the Berky water filter so I can afford to sacrifice a few.
  13. Thanks for the reply. I will give this a try in the next few weeks when I get back to Sam's Club.
  14. I have some #10 cans of powdered milk but want to do some vacuum caned quart jars using my food saver jar attachment. I fear that the powder would make a huge mess and my thought was to top the almost full jar of powder with a coffee filter. My hope is that this will trap the dust during the draw down and allow me to store this in smaller sizes. The #10 cans are supposed to be good for 20 years so I feel this would be good for at least 10 years. What are the thoughts of the rest of you folks and or have any of you come up with a way to "can" powders like milk and flower?
  15. I liked both of those books but one that is a precursor that I found even more interesting was Lucifer's Hammer. In that one an asteroid hits California. It covers the escape and reconstitution of a government at least on a small scale. Excellent premise including one guy that saves how to books in a septic tank.
