  1. They actually published that portion of Mormon Doctrine in the CES student manual "Teaching of the Living Prophets" (see)
  2. You are correct, it was only a Alphabet and not a language as it only used phonetic spelling of the spoken English language using a new alphabet. ( See post) True in my eyes, but there are perspectives such as the American Mormon Historian David L. Bigler who writes of this:“[The Deseret Alphabet] demonstrated cultural exclusivism, an important consideration. It also kept secrets from curious non-Mormons, controlled what children would be allowed to read…” I think this perspective is made because they assume no one else would bother to learn the system and assume that Mormons would use it as a code with the key being hidden which was not the case. I believe that Brigham Young, George D. Watt and Parley P. Pratt would have been thrilled at the idea of it becoming the universally written English, or even internationally, used alphabet.
  3. So I have recently done research on the Mid 1800 Deseret Alphabet that was created by Brigham Young. I found it really interesting so I'm posting a link to my article. It's always fun to decipher things such as this - one of the four books published by The University of Deseret (Now University of Utah) which helps you learn the alphabet. Thoughts? Efforts at translation? To see the article (more of the History, an explanation of why and how, and more neat pictures) see my blog post below. The Sign of Jonas: Church History Q&A: Did Brigham Young really try to implement a secret Deseret Language?

    Hi

Welcome :) You just need to summer in Canada.
  5. So does that mean that you would not do anything that you're future husband would look back on in Heaven and not feel jipped? And from you're last statement it is apparent that you never kissed anyone before you were engaged? Meaning that you never have kissed anyone but you're husband?? Everyone has their way of doing it but that makes me... not sad...I don't know. I almost feel the same way about that as dating exclusively before ever having a romantic relationship. You need to know what is out there and experience it. Know that you have chemistry. My opinion though, and all i know is that it works for me. (although I am currently single so maybe not :) )
  6. What I think is funny is how many times you say "hi" when you first talk: "hello?" "hey this is ___" "Oh! Hi! How are you doing?" "hey, I'm doing great...."
  7. Cutting through anything that has been said in the last four pages (which I have not read), it seems like she has an issue with reality. MAYBE. I don't know but it doesn't sound like she is too comfortable in person as she was virtually. You need to be able to talk not just text. Maybe she likes you but doesn't have the confidence or gumption to talk to you. I may be biased against online sites but from my impression from talking to people this is a common element among the online community.
  8. I don't think I would feel very comfortable even cuddling with my previous gfs if their parents were in the room. :) But I don't like PDA too much. http://www.lds.org/youthresources/pdf/ForStrengYouth36550.pdf That is the recommended guidelines of the church, look under sexual purity for intimacy issues. Ultimately it is up to the individual so it really depends on her.
  9. Welcome Addz! Glad to see someone take an interest in religion at you're age, where most people pull away and rebel, keep with it. A really good site to learn more about the Church is Mormon.org - Home , it's a gooder.
  10. A while back I created a blog with a few people from the Mormon-nets and personal acquaintances one of those including Rameumptom of this forum also Tephrochr who is on this forum (along with myself). Anyhow one of the Authors is Jewish born Elder Raymond Besse, a former Jewish Rabbi with a Bachelors in Judaic Studies from American Jewish University, he continued studying in Jerusalem becoming a Rabbi, he later converted and is currently serving as a part time missionary for the LDS church. Ray here gives an authoritative firsthand religious comparison between Mormons and Jews. He will be posting ever month and a half on this weekly posting blog for those who are interested in Jewish/Mormon studies, a great guy for questions. The Sign of Jonas: Jews and Mormons: Similarities and Differences As a plug we have openings coming up for authorships on the Sign of Jonas as one of our members is going on a mission in the future. If you are interested check out this thread: http://www.lds.net/forums/lds-gospel-discussion/32188-new-academic-blog.html Or just message me.
  11. Some of those comments are confusing me... (alcohol and latte? Why question is she is LDS (Mormon)) Mormons don't drink coffee hence the ex-nay on the Latte. Kissing is a go. The one thing you should know about dating Mormons is the doctrine of Eternal Marriage: We believe in civil marriages, but we also believe that when a man and a woman are married by the proper authority they be together in this life and the next. This is something that is generally desirable for those in the faith, but to have this done both parties must make the promise with God. Both must be baptized members and living up to the promises they made at baptism (why make MORE promises if you're not keeping the ones you already have made). This girl may really like you and just not want to get into a serious relationship because she wants to be married to someone for eternity. Anyhow welcome to the forum, if you really want to have a good summery of the religion go to Mormon.org - Home there are movies that you can watch, information about the church, a lot of free material you can order, or chat to representatives online. It's a good stop to make. I hope to see you around.

  13. Hey I have visited (and commented) on your blog (under Lynden Jensen)! Sweet stuff. I'm a artist too, but just for fun, I play guitar, bass, and piano. I do some recordings. Anyhow welcome.
  14. There are new hymns in the hymn book (considering the hymn book is 20 years old), but they are in the similar style.
  15. I only saw my dad in his Garments if he was changing into PJs, I didn't even realize their were symbols on them until I was getting ready to go to the temple. They washed them and folded them as anything else. I'm not going to walk around the house with them but I don't have an aversion of people seeing them.
  16. Most people that learn to swim do a lot of floundering first. (meaning they struggle) Although the missionaries get formal training it is primary theoretical most of the actual integration and training is done in the first few months of the mission, they will have a seasoned companion who can help them as well as receiving weekly trainings by other missionaries and occasional other training meetings. They also study their language every morning for a period of time
  17. I took my endowments out in the Seattle Temple! :)
  18. Official scripture for The church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints must be canonized, meaning submitted and approved by the 12 apostles [and the the general membership of the church]. Generally though in D&C 42: 28 it tells us that whatever is spoken under the influence of the Holy Ghost is scripture. I once read a general authority that said something to the effect that "There is a lot of doctrine that isn't "official Doctrine"" meaning that just because it hasn't been canonized doesn't mean it's not doctrine. I think we can be reasonably secure in believing that the words of the prophets are on par with scriptures. As Ezra Taft Bension said: "The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works." So I would say scripture is subjective for the individual but for LDS we should be considering the words and council of the prophets scripture (when they are speaking in their capacities as prophets seer and revelators)
  19. I served in Vegas, I love that temple. I like it at night, you can see and look over to the strip... My favorite temple.
  20. Agreed with 727, go to church and be honest, tell them you aren't ready to talk about it, it doesn't have to be a "come into my office" chat. I would suggest start meeting with the missionaries, when you have your little talk with the bishop mention that. This will let your BF know whats going on, it will help you to figure things out. And come on, who doesn't like the missionaries? Good luck!
  21. There are other creations out there we don't know about. As far as highest mortal life, what do you mean? Most intelligent? I would postulate that there are other 'human-like' being out there made in Gods image.
