  1. What's the difference between Mormons and non-Mormons? The temperature of their caffeine.
  2. How do you tell the difference between a Mormon and a non-stop Mormon? The temperature of their caffeine.
  3. I should add that the problem I have with the quote is that Brigham seems to be saying that if you don't love your spouse now you will automatically love them in the after life because we'll be perfect. There seems to be a paradox and a contradiction there. It seems to be contrary to the doctrine that we'll be raised with all the passions, feelings, tendencies and knowledge we have when we left the world. The paradox I see is how can we not love them, and everyone else after we are perfected if the attribute of perfect love is not found in us at that point? And would our inability to either accept, or reject the sealing in the afterlife void our agency? Wasn't our agency a rather large sticking point for some in the pre mortal world? Or have I just been awake too long?
  4. Yeah, but Brother Brigham also said in the journal of discourses that there were people living on the moon. I wouldn't believe everything in the JD. If it were in any of the Standard Works though it would be a different story.
  5. Yes He knew. (Not sure if we knew or not, but it was pre-veil, so I don't see the harm in having it revealed to us) 2 Nephi 9:20: "O how great the holiness of our God! For he knoweth all things, and there is not anything save he knows it." There are no exceptions to that truth. "He knoweth all things! Except who our parents would be, the choices we would make in life, whether or not we would make it back to Him, and what kind of car we would drive." It doesn't work like that. He knows EVERYTHING.
  6. Hey OP, do you mean 2 Nephi 9:8? 1 Nephi 9:8 doesn't exist... Anyhoo... I'm not too sure about that. Alma 42:5: "For behold, if Adam had put forth his hand immediately, and partaken of the tree of life, he would have lived forever, according to the word of God, having no space for repentance; yea, and also the word of God would have been void, and the great plan of salvation would have been frustrated." He would have lived forever in his sins, not being able to repent. He would have been miserable forever, not being able to repent. He would have been immortal - still possessing a body, but under the power of the devil, miserable forever and angles to a devil forever. If it was as simple as needing a body to overcome Satan the Lord God would not have placed cherubim and the flaming sword, that he should not partake of the fruit. Take the fruit - immortal - done. We need to die. Without it there is no repentance, for there would be no need to do so. Without repentance there is no forgiveness. Without forgiveness you remain in your sins. To remain in your sins is misery. It's all in Alma 42.
  7. Serious question: In one post you say you are not a member, yet in another post you say you want to get out as though you were "in" and a member. So which is it?
  8. Ding ding ding! The Nephite cycle of righteousness: And from 3rd Nephi 6:15-17 Now the cause of this iniquity of the people was this—Satan had great power, unto the stirring up of the people to do all manner of iniquity, and to the puffing them up with pride, tempting them to seek for power, and authority, and riches, and the vain things of the world. 16And thus Satan did lead away the hearts of the people to do all manner of iniquity; therefore they had enjoyed peace but a few years. 17And thus, in the commencement of the thirtieth year—the people having been delivered up for the space of a long time to be carried about by the temptations of the devil withersoever he desired to carry them, and to do whatsoever iniquity he desired they should—and thus in the commencement of this, the thirtieth year, they were in a state of awful wickedness. I added the bold, but you can easily see that one of the root causes of all of their sins was pride. So destructive was this pride that Satan had such power over the people that he could get them to do whatsoever iniquity he desired. No doubt at all that included sexual promiscuity.
  9. More fuel on the fire: I read recently on here about decaf coffee being against the WoW. Since when? I asked my bishop a few years ago about it and he said decaf is fine.
  10. HA HA HA! Oh man where is the laugh button when I need it? And the Earth is only 6000 years old too, right?
  11. I'm in that exact boat, but I am one of the children. I will be able to continue an eternal parent/child relationship with both of my natural parents on the other side of the veil even if they live in different mansions. I have no interest in a relationship with my step-mother.
  12. What about this?: 6And on this wise do I give the account. He that wrote this record was aEther, and he was a descendant of Coriantor. 7Coriantor was the son of Moron. 8And Moron was the son of Ethem. 9And Ethem was the son of Ahah. 10And Ahah was the son of Seth. 11And Seth was the son of Shiblon. 12And Shiblon was the son of Com. 13And Com was the son of Coriantum. 14And Coriantum was the son of Amnigaddah. 15And Amnigaddah was the son of Aaron. 16And Aaron was a descendant of Heth, who was the son of Hearthom. 17And Hearthom was the son of Lib. 18And Lib was the son of Kish. 19And Kish was the son of Corom. 20And Corom was the son of Levi. 21And Levi was the son of Kim. 22And Kim was the son of Morianton. 23And Morianton was a descendant of Riplakish. 24And Riplakish was the son of Shez. 25And Shez was the son of Heth. 26And Heth was the son of Com. 27And Com was the son of Coriantum. 28And Coriantum was the son of Emer. 29And Emer was the son of Omer. 30And Omer was the son of Shule. 31And Shule was the son of Kib. 32And aKib was the son of bOrihah, who was the son of Jared; Captain_Curmedgeon, spell it like this: Moby D!ck that way the censors don't filter it. (I'm just busting your chops guys) Anyway, I love reading it. It's a spiritual feast. Feels so goooood!
  13. But, like others have said; maybe it refers to relationships that continue beyond the grave despite posterity being locked in a kingdom of lesser glory... That's how I understood it anyway
  14. + 1 I was born in the covenant, but that does not by any means give me a free pass to live a wicked life. If I do so, knowing full well the will of God and his commandments, and rebel doing as I please - "committing whoredoms and murder and all manner of wickedness", I will burn in hell forever. "can ye imagine yourselves brought before the tribunal of God with your souls filled with guilt and remorse, having a remembrance of all your guilt, yea, a perfect remembrance of all your wickedness, yea, a remembrance that ye have set at defiance the commandments of God? I say unto you, can ye look up to God at that day with a pure heart and clean hands? I say unto you, can you look up, having the image of God engraven upon your countenances? I say unto you, can ye think of being saved when you have yielded yourselves to become subjects to the devil? 21I say unto you, ye will know at that day that ye cannot be saved; for there can no man be saved except his garments are washed white; yea, his garments must be purified until they are cleansed from all stain, through the blood of him of whom it has been spoken by our fathers, who should come to redeem his people from their sins." There is no foot note or addendum in that passage of scripture that says, "Unless you have been sealed to your parents. Then you are good to go." Laman and Lemuel had a righteous father to which I am sure they either were sealed or have been/will be at some point, but they were wicked and must pay the price. Mercy cannot rob justice, neither can being sealed to parents.
  15. April 2003 general conference. Russel M. Nelson: "We often kneel to pray; we may stand or be seated. Physical position is less important than is spiritual submission to God."
  16. Current Church policy is that if an individual has been promiscuous with one or several partners for an extended period of time outside of marriage they are ineligible for missionary service . Is this a recent change (last 10-15 years)?
  17. It didn't sound like that was the point you were trying to make. After all, you said: That makes it sound like you were saying that you must have a current Temple Recommend in order to purchase garments. Or did I read that wrong?
  18. Well, I have to disagree with that. I haven't held a temple recommend for over 6 years, yet I was able to purchase a whole bunch of new garments for my wife and myself recently. All without a recommend. At the temple. They asked for my recommend when I was checking out. I said I don't have one. They asked for my drivers license and looked up my info gave me the garments and sent me on my way. Again - you do not need to have a current recommend in order to buy garments.
  19. Yeah that was pretty much what the article Connie quoted was getting at.
  20. Perhaps the OP was referring to the succession crisis in regards to the church leadership following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith. Or is my sarcasm detector not working?
  21. Oh yeah, and read what Connie posted. More than one prophet has testified to the fact that Satan can influence our minds and thoughts: "The scriptures make clear that the adversary cannot know our thoughts. “Yea, I tell thee, that thou mayest know that there is none else save God that knowest thy thoughts and the intents of thy heart” (D&C 6:16). The scriptures also make clear, however, that Satan can influence our thoughts and actions by putting ideas into our minds and hearts."
  22. Scriptural record would indicate that he can in fact place thoughts in our minds. How else would he tempt us? Neon signs? For he (Satan) hath put into their hearts to do this...
  23. +1 If those things are difficult, pray for strength, you'll get it. And if you do those things everything else will fall in to place naturally, I guarantee it. It might take a while, years even, but just keep it up. It worked for me. 1) Read scriptures daily (even one verse) 2) Pray at least twice daily (short and sweet still counts) 3) Attend church (vital, even fast and testimony meeting )
  24. Yeah, I thought it was literal too. Maybe not? If not, what is it symbolic of?
