  1. I read the opinion, and it sounds like the problem was that 4/5 of the prayers invoked the name of Jesus. The Board had a rotation set up so that no denomination prays more than twice in a year and those prayers couldn't be back to back. The ruling favors "nonsectarian" prayers (almost encouraging legislative prayers); it sounds like it would also be ok with a rotation that was fair in a senate kind of way - not a house of reps kind of way (bucketize religions into n groups and each group gets the same number of prayers - as opposed to everybody gets a chance, but the majority (bucket) religion gets the majority of prayers).
  2. Ah yes, I remember meeting you. We were at the stadium watching the big game. You were standing in front of me. "Excuse me," I said, "would you mind sitting down? You're blocking my vision." You replied, "My apologies, I didn't realize you were having one!"
  3. The Father and the Son: A Doctrinal Exposition by the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles First, we are literally spirit children of God the Father. Beyond that, there are three ways Jesus is referred to as the Father: Creator.Under the direction of his Father, Jesus created the heavens and the earth. Adoption.Through the ways described by HiJolly. Divine Investiture of Authority. This is fancy talk meaning that Jesus can represent his Father, even to the point of speaking for him. Examples of each are in the article.
  4. Yikes!! All his base really are belong to Nelly!!!
  5. Joseph Smith added some context in his translation: This still doesn't answer why males only. I think it addresses some aspects of the symbol though (it's connection to the seed, why 8 days). I seem to remember from my readings in Josephus that other cultures practiced circumcision. I think he was busting out Philo (?) for assuming the Jews were just Egyptians that left Egypt based on the fact that both were circumcised. Anybody else familiar with this?
  6. You're just adding insult to injury. His life is already broken. Because his friends' idea of a fun weekend is piecing together partial files to see what he's deleted off his computer. To the OP. Best thing you can do now is just come clean. Admit on facebook that you use LDS.net and face the consequences.
  7. If this is not God's religion, then please PLEASE PLEASE show me my error and point me in the right direction!! But for your consideration: An army of monkeys flinging feces at me will not convince me to join their ranks. I guess it's the old saying about catching flies with honey not vinegar. Joseph Smith said after the First Vision he was I did come across an Anti how-to that preached this principle, and the author won a lot of my respect by doing so.
  8. And besides that, we all know the best way to get a hold of Pam is through LDS.net.
  9. Are we still calling them Returned Missionaries? I thought when we updated Ward Teachers to Home Teachers and Genealogy to Family History and Home Making to Home Family and Personal Enrichment to Relief Society that we started calling them Veteran Missionaries.
  10. I should probably clarify. You're walking down the street with Moses and when you turn the corner and see Sam Jones shoot his butler in the face. Just then, a really large piano falls on him and he dies. Moses turns to you and says "What this man just did was a sin. He knew better; he is a murderer." You live out your life to the end of your days, and when you get resurrected, there's Sam Jones in the Celestial Kingdom! What is did was a sin. There's no question of that. Moses, speaking with his prophetic authority, told you this was the case. Before he entered the Kingdom, he had to repent an become clean. He had to transform from a murderer to someone worthy of that Kingdom. It's like what my great-aunt would tell people when they asked her why she sealed herself to her abusive dead husband. "If he's in heaven, then he's finally the man I wanted when I married him; if he's in hell, then it don't mean a thing anyway." Semi-officially (I can think of some McConkie quotes), baptism is the gate to the Celestial Kingdom. We do the work for everyone, but it is only efficacious for those who are headed there. Just between you and me though, I ponder often as to whether it's just for the CK or not. Remember, this is just between you and me, so if I see reference to this thought I'll assume you violated my trust and I will humiliate you so bad you will wish you were born a poodle!!!!
  11. Is there an app to make your smart phone a rotary dial? And is that what the local Rotary Club is? A group of old fogies that get together and reminesce about when phones used to make sense?
  12. Review D&C 76. Murderers do not inherit the Celestial Kingdom. If you see any of these people there, they will not be murderers or terrorists.
  13. I'm wondering if maybe I can sit down for dinner tonight and bless the food. And then with the blessed food, maybe proxy bless it in behalf of my other meal. Anyone have experience with this? I've had a terrible time eating this week. I find it difficult to chew food with a cheekful of tongue.
  14. Looks like he's lip syncing the Lawrence Welk Show.
  15. I may be looking beyond the mark here, but the idea of atonement on a national level suggests to my mind the Atonement applying on a national level. It's as though the gathering is promised because of that Atonement. I can't really connect the dots. I'm wondering if you're aware of any correlaries.
  16. Thanks everyone for your input. Unfortunately, I didn't bother blessing the leftovers and now I'm concerned that I did something wrong. Usually, if I take a bite of something without blessing it, I have someone say a prayer and leave my mouth open. But in this case, the food is long gone, so how do I retroactively bless it?
  17. Sure. Freeze the two buckets of water. Put the two ice chunks in a third container, and then return the blocks to the original buckets with extra whence.
  18. I recall from reading Edersheim that there were sacrifices to atone for individual sin, and sacrifices for national sin. Is that still a prevalent thought or is it considered outdated?
  19. D&C 128 suggests that the offering of the sons of Levi is the records we have of work done in the temple.
  20. If you had not plowed with my heifer, you would not have solved my riddle!!
