As a former Catholic, I learned my Catechism, not the Bible. So, there were a lot of times when the missionaries would tell me something, and in the back of my  mind, I'd think - y'all have got to be fooling - then I'd find out it was right from the Bible. This is one reason why I believe the Church is true - every time I doubted, the missionaries were able to point to the Bible and show me where a belief or practice came from. Cool.
Well, I've been asked to give a short talk on Christ's mercy and was looking up some relevant scripture. Earlier this evening I was reading a thread here about being cast into outer darkness. "Outer darkness" was another one of these phrases that I thought the LDS had made up. So, imagine my surprise when I read, "but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness." Matthew 8:5-13   Wait - 'Outer darkness' is in the Bible??? You mean Joseph Smith didn't make it up?  I love it when this happens to me. I've read the BOM a few times. Maybe for 2018 my goal should be to read the Bible. I might learn something.

I audit human subjects research at a Big 10 university. We frequently attend webinars on new trends in research; this is one of them. An on-going problem for IRBs (the boards that approve the research), however, is how do you verify who has signed the consent and who is putting in the data when using mobile devices? This is in addition to concerns re confidentiality of any info input into a mobile device. This all gives IRBs some headaches, but doesn't seem to be halting research in this area.

I always found it ironic that the "weird" Mormon beliefs aren't from the Book of Mormon or even the Doctrine and Covenants, but from the Bible (spirit prison, baptism for the dead, three degrees of glory, etc.)

I agree with the point I think you're making. Feeling up other people who you're not married to is scummy, but feeling up people who haven't made it clear it's okay with them that you do so is borderline criminal (or in some cases, not borderline at all). If a high school boy lightly pinches a girl's rear end without any sort of permission, I don't think we should slap the cuffs on him. I do think he should be expelled from school. If he keeps repeating such behavior, then I think legal action is reasonable.
At the risk of a thread hijack:
Telling little Sally to give her Grandma a hug: HORRORS!
I disagree strongly with the above sentiment. I see nothing wrong with telling your child to give a relative a hug. If the child strongly resists, I would not push the issue. But I flatly disagree with those who preach "boundaries" to the point that they think it's evil to teach your child to express affection physically.

If there is a matter which requires church discipline, that is discussed with the person and the necessary council together.  For a non-Melchedisk priesthood holder, that council is the bishopric; for a-Melchedisk priesthood holder, it's people at the stake level.

Yes, Mormons take oaths and swear on the scriptures... it's on the individual's head if s/he swears under oath and knowingly lies.
The abuse of swearing by the heavens above or the earth etc is what the commandment is about-  knowingly lying and calling god into it is the sin.

People read that commandment literally and assume the sin is swearing but the commandment is all about not bringing down a double portion of judgement upon your own head should you lie. The lie is the first transgression and the swearing upon such and such in order to bolster the lie is the second sin.

Hmm, it's sort of related (the double damnation) but I was reading Talmage on Judas recently and Judas added a double portion to his fate by having a go at Mary Mag when she washed the Savior's feet with expensive oil- see, he thought he was cunning by claiming that the oil could have been sold and the money given to the poor yet he betrayed the Savior for personal gain (money).

Actually, Democrats is a ancient word that was mistranslated by a careless scribe.  In it's original proper spelling it was demonrats but the "n" was misread as a "c".

I think some people here said the Adversary would try to stop my baptism. Please. I don't function at the whim of some spirit. Why do LDS (and some other Protestant groups) get all worried about the devil? God and Jesus have more power than evil. I focus on them. And if I get sick or in an accident (or have an $800 car repair bill, donations accepted...), it's because I was exposed to germs, or a woman hit me in the parking lot, or my 12 yr old car will need repairs sometimes, it's not because of Satan. Good grief.
