I am trying to read the BOM by Christmas. It's not going as fast as I had hoped, but I'm still reading, so I guess that's what counts.

The other day I read, "Brethren, adieu." in Jacob. Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. Adieu? In the BOM??? Obviously I didn't read as closely as I might have the first time around. This was shocking. Now, I firmly believe that Joseph Smith translated the BOM, but 'adieu'? Surely Brother Joseph sneaked in there a little, certainement? I could have let that be the beginning of a slippery slope of picking apart the BOM for what I thought didn't belong there.

Then I did some online searching and found 'Why is the French word "adieu" in the Book of Mormon?  And my questions were answered!  See:  http://en.fairmormon.org/Book_of_Mormon/Anachronisms/Language/%22Adieu%22

As President Uchtdorf said, "Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters - my dear friends - please, first doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith. We must never allow doubt to hold us prisoner and keep us from the divine love, peace, and gifts that come through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ."

Just a little history on Dahlia. When she first started coming to this site she was just investigating the Church.  Since then she's been baptized and has gone to the temple. Dahlia is awesome.

Oh for crying out loud - how often does this stuff have to come up? Didn't the Church put out a press statement about a year ago about this? When I was an investigator, one of my first questions to the elders was could I continue to drink diet Pepsi - with the response being a resounding 'yes.' If you drink soda by the liter every day, you might have an addiction issue that you need to address. Otherwise, can we put this topic to rest?

I teach once a month. One of the other teachers works at the hospital and sometimes we switch days so she can work. I switched when my son  got married and we had an open house on Sunday. I don't see what's wrong with subbing, as long as you do it in advance enough for the leaders to get a substitute.

I bought an electric pressure cooker before Christmas.  I love it. I can do veg only as well as meats for my son. I love that I can come home from work, throw stuff in it, go change my clothes, etc and not worry about it until it's ready. No standing around stirring, etc.  there are a number of FB pages for pressure cookers, just find the one that suits your needs. There are also PC videos on YouTube. It may be worth it to look around and not worry about the brand, just look at the videos and see what they can do.

I don't know all the answers. I've read the Book of Mormon about 1.5 times. I listen to more LDS music and read more about Church history and Joseph Smith than I do the BOM. I can't cite chapter and verse of the Bible the way some people at church can.

What I do during many of my lessons is turn it around to the class - 'You tell me about ...' 'I think this means X, but are there other interpretations I'm not aware of?'  'Tell me about some people from the BOM who embody this characteristic.'  That way, there is discussion, and they have to think about what they know and how to tell it to someone who doesn't know a lot (tell it to me like I'm a 10 yr old).

We have a number of recent and not so recent converts, so while I phrase my questions in terms of 'tell me,' info is also getting out to the other converts in RS. I also bring in quotes from other religions if relevant (I'm often  surprised at how little many of the sisters know about other religions) and have talked about civil rights/ethics/religion issues. I didn't mean to go there, but, for example, how do you talk about forgiveness without talking about MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail and discussing how long you 'turn the other check' and when is it appropriate to move on and take action? I'm pretty sure they didn't expect that, but we wound up having a good discussion of women and abuse and 'taking it.' I can tell you now that the lessons from the born Mormons don't get anywhere near topics like this.

Some of the lessons 'write themselves,' some make me sit and think and ask you guys stuff and scour the internet to help me understand. It isn't always easy, but I think it's worth the struggle.
