We have very few people in our ward that fall away. I live in the suburbs half way between Salt Lake City and Provo, and most of my neighbors are LDS. In my area, if someone does go inactive, they usually still have a belief in the church, but they allow something or some event to keep them from attending meetings. They usually come back. For those members in my ward that have gone through divorces, they have not gone inactive.  In fact, they receive a lot of support from the ward. I'm blessed to live in the area I live in. We are truly a ward family.  We mourn with those that mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice.

It's been my experience that those who truly fall away, they were looking for any excuse to leave.

We're late in getting our garden planted. I'm feeling discouraged. How are you all doing with your gardens? What have you planted?

I'm hoping to get everything planted the next day or two. I've decided to go with a smaller garden this year.  We had too much go to waste last year, and certain plants didn't do well.

I'm thinking of planting the following:
    Tomatoes, several different varieties
    Bell Peppers
    Cucumbers
    Zucchini Squash
    Crook Neck Squash
    Radishes
    Turnips
    Green Beans
    Broccoli
    Pumpkin
    Carrots
Maybe some golden flax (my 91 year old mother wants me to plant flax.)  I've never planted it before. I need to read up on it and see if planting time is late Spring.
I would like to plant strawberries in an old wheelbarrow of ours.  I'm hoping it isn't too late in the season.
I wanted to plant red potatoes, but it may be too late in the season.  I need to read up on it.  Same with peas.

This year I am not planting cabbage, cauliflower, watermelon, corn, cantaloupe, or any other melon.

I'm off to the nursery in a few hours to buy some plants.  Wish me luck for this year's garden!

We had late frost this year too--Mother's Day weekend. In that regard, I'm glad we didn't get our garden out early.

I've had the same experience with bush beans vs. pole beans.  My bush beans have done great.  I tried pole beans last year and I was very disappointed. Going to plant bush beans this year.

I wanted to plant about two weeks ago, but had a week of non-stop heavy rains.  Then last week I just didn't get around to it, which turned out to be a good thing, because we had a frost warning overnight from Saturday onto Sunday this part weekend.

I live in a suburban area with a small yard.  But I've managed to make the most of it, garden-wise, such that even serious gardners in my area are jealous of me.  :)  I have a strip of raised bed about 40-45 feet long, and 2-2.5 feet wide along the side of my yard.  Half of it runs between my house and my neighbor's driveway, and the other half runs between my neighbor's fence and the grass in my backyard.  I've had the latter for five years now, but last year was the first year we did anything on the side of the house.  We were worried that it wouldn't get enough sunlight, being tucked between tightly-sandwiched houses, but we did great over there last year!

    My plans for this year:
Peas (I only did one row last year, not sure how they'd do, and they did great, so I'm going to do a lot more this time.) Green bell peppers Carmen red peppers Jalapeños Zucchini Tomatoes Cucumber (I haven't decided for sure yet.) Spinach Green beans (I've done bush beans in the past, and successfully harvested two crops, which is impressive for where I live.  Last year I tried pole beans for the first time, hoping I could maximize space.  Instead, they just grew so thick and dense that nothing grew in between the first and fourth rows I planted, and they took until almost October to produce.  Never doing that again...) Onions (I bought some Walla Walla starters!) Lettuce (I like a giant Caesar variety.) Potatoes (Might be too late by now...I'm not sure.) Garlic (I'll plant this in October) Hoping to get it all in this weekend!

Oh, and I also have basil and cilantro.

classylady reacted to mirkwood in Christ vs Baal - what is the difference
Satan mimics truth.  There are similarities and truths in many things.  Having ALL truth is the key.  Baal  worship is not conducive in any way with Christianity.  One need simply look at the hedonism and child sacrifice encompassed by Baal worship to see the difference.

But as was said before, you already know where the LDS faithful (and Christians in general) are coming from.

My grandmother has decided that for her 85th birthday she wants to be sealed to her husband and children.  This is a woman who converted to marry my LDS grandfather (who never went through the temple and was rather inactive his whole life), did church stuff for decades for "social reasons" and only got serious about her faith a few years ago.

My poor dad, being the only living male in the family, has to apparently stand in for two other people besides himself.

Anywho, I'm quite excited about this upcoming sealing.

It has thrown me off too, but I'm sure it's just because I'm not used to where it is now.  I'm thinking that within a day or two I'll automatically go to the top left to find it.

Our computers would be our biggest luxury.  Every person in our household has their own laptop.  Granted, most of the computers were not new when purchased, but used ones that my husband reconditioned.  We would all have withdrawals if our computers were taken away.  I have to admit, it isn't the computer so much, but access to the internet that would bring me withdrawals.

To me, every modern day convenience I have, I consider a luxury.  I love my mixer, refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, toaster, griddle, toilets, showers/tubs, clean running water, soap/shampoo, food from the grocery store, internet, rototiller, pickup/car, ready made clothing, towels, quilts/blankets, etc.

I hope the situation IS fake.  If it isn't there is a family and a ward with major issues.  Unfortunately there are people who like to play off of perceived "peculiarities" of the LDS and try to cause trouble.  It is terrible because it gets in the way of honest communication and learning. I have grown from animosity to love towards Mormons in my months here.  Not that I'd ever convert- I just have a greater understanding and appreciation for them as individuals and I can't wait for my hubby to find a job in Utah.

If my daughter did this, even if she truly felt uncomfortable with the Bishop's interview, I would be so ashamed--ashamed that my daughter has no regard for authority or appropriate behavior.  Did I not teach her proper behavior?  How could I as a parent fall so short of my responsibility of teaching correct manners.  If this is an actual occurrence, and not some troll trying to get a rise out of us, I would be so embarrassed over my child's behavior.  And, I as a mother, look at my children's behavior as a reflection on me.  This is not a funny joke that she perpetrated.  This is just totally uncalled for and inappropriate.  I may rile a few people here, because I understand that children can go against their parent's teachings.  But, this behavior is not acceptable.  If the Bishop's questions were a little out of line, then she should have gone to her parents.  This sounds to me like she purposefully egged him on.  And recorded it!

I should probably just erase what I just typed and not post this.  I usually don't get upset over posts.  And, it's not the post that is upsetting me, it's the behavior of a 15 year old girl.  Not acceptable or funny!

classylady got a reaction from Leah in "Believe" vs "Know"
As a new missionary in the LTM (Language Training Mission, now the MTC), I was learning the discussions and came to where we testify to the investigator: "I testify to you in the name of Jesus Christ that Joseph Smith saw Jesus Christ and God the Father".  I had to stop and think, could I actually testify in the name of Christ to the truthfulness of the Joseph Smith vision and other aspects of the Gospel?  This was serious.  I couldn't just spout off the words if I didn't actually know if they were true.  To me, testifying in the name of Jesus Christ meant more than just belief.  It meant, I needed to know!  And, I needed more than just the faith and belief that I had.  Had I in the past had a strong spiritual witness of the truthfulness of what I was about to teach investigators?  And, I couldn't think of any.  At the time I was relying on belief and faith.

I got down on my knees and prayed for a strong spiritual witness.  I explained to Father in Heaven that if I was going to testify in the name of Christ to His investigators, that I needed more than belief and faith.  I needed to know.  It took more than one prayer.  It took a lot of tears and humility on my part.  But, I got my spiritual witness.  To this day I cannot deny that witness.  And, I was able to go out into the mission field with more than faith and belief.  I was able to go out in the field with knowledge.  I was able to testify in the name of Jesus Christ of the truthfulness of the Gospel, and of the truthfulness of Joseph Smith's vision.

For those who have never received a spiritual witness from the Holy Ghost, they may never understand how one can say "I know".  But, if you have received that witness, then you understand and it's undeniable.
