What? Do you people SERIOUSLY wear red? Filthy apostates!

Haven't you ever heard "Red worn around means Satan abounds"?

It is if you are also a man. Of course, that rule would also apply to a domestic man.

I don't think its as outrageous as you're making it out to be. She was not actually giving a "how-to" seminar; she was relating a (for her) scary experience. I'm not sure what "burn it to death" meant, but the dead rat didn't look all that burned. Maybe it just wasn't a good picture, I don't know.

I agree with estradling. To me, it reads like a humorous, self-mocking account of pest control by a young woman with no experience in such things. I agree it's kind of sad, and hopefully if her future holds more rat-killing, she'll learn to dispatch the poor animals in a quicker and more humane method. But I think you're making too much of this story.

Or, maybe you could be a good example to them and show them how the Gospel has made you a better person and how important it is in your life.

Thanks Ned Flanders. I'm going to need your bank account info and address so I can see if you are in possession of anything I need. Since you really don't own anything I'm sure you wouldn't mind if I take what I want.

My little boy, my 37 yr old pumpkin, is engaged!  I think they will get married at the end of next term.

They've been dating 2 years, she's a doctoral student as well - in education statistics, for crying out loud. Petite (former gymnast), a blond Swede to match my son's 20% Finnish background (we got tested).

She actually came with me to a church activity. I'd say the two of them are what I understand to be 'dry Mormons.' They like a lot about the Mormon lifestyle, but aren't ready to make the commitment, but culturally, at least, there's a meeting of the minds on modesty, family night, preparedness, homeschooling, the role of the father in the family, etc., which is good. Actually, other than homeschooling, this is pretty much how we lived before I converted. I'm glad he wants to repeat it in his own family, whether he's in the Church or not.

She's 28 and ready to have babies (her words), so, perhaps I'll be a nana before they put me in the assisted living facility.

I'd suggest that developing a perception of Mormons based on debates you've presented in an online forum is an invalid method.

If you think Mormons are not compassionate, don't sacrifice for others, don't believe we are brothers and sisters beloved by our Heavenly Father, that we don't love our fellow men......then you either have serious comprehension skills or are simply refusing to see what is right in front of you. Or you had no intention of opening your mind to viewpoints other than your own.

If you are looking for a religion to tick every one of your pre-determined boxes of demands, I don't believe you are ever going to find that anywhere. That is not what religion is about.

If you are looking for the truth, however......

Like many other Europeans, you have the idea that government must be the vehicle to achieve what you call "social justice". Many Americans, especially conservatives, disagree. Latter-day Saints in particular believe that such actions must arise from the individual, not be forced by government (though a significant minority of Latter-day Saints agree with the governmentally imposed "social justice" idea).

I think your observations are wrong, and that you are hopelessly mired in your own prejudices and societal conditioning. But as I have pointed out in the case of others, my opinion and a dollar will buy you a dollar's worth of stuff.

I've got a pretty anti-religion family. Even with it being Christmas, it won't make a difference (let's not even add in the fact that it's three hours of meetings). They are skipping a children's choir performance my cousin is playing piano/violin for on Christmas eve, even though the religious message will probably stop at the Christmas story and it should be short.
I am in the middle of building my testimony back up after being inactive for seven years, so skipping feels like it would be a step in the wrong direction for me.

What is with the recent fad of dismissing ancient thinkers and writers as "wandering Jews" or "Bronze Age shepherds"? How is their being "wandering Jews" or from the Bronze Age (which in any case is factually incorrect -- the Bible as a history of Israel is based firmly in Iron Age culture, which is precisely the basis of our own culture and technology) relevant to the truthfulness and insights into the human condition that they had? What sort of mindless hubris convinces people that we today somehow have a better handle on what it means to be human than the ancients did?

I have seen this attitude a lot in the last few years, and it utterly baffles me. Are people really and honestly so blind that they think our ability to make DVDs means we understand the human mind and soul better than the ancients?

Tell your son that when he is an adult and paying the bills he can make the rules. Be the parent, not the friend who negotiates with a dependent teenager. Kids don't need more friends at home, they need a parent who will help guide them through their adolescent years.
