  1. This may explain ‘the horses’. Imagine translating complex material quickly. You envision a lama pulling a cart. You have never seen a lama so ‘horse’. Joesph Smith probably did not have an extensive vocabulary at point in his life nor much experience in deciphering complex word problems. I wonder if he owned a scrabble board or similar?
  2. @Grunt Thanks for your comment! I did not know if the valve was letting water out or if the valve was turned off!
  3. @Traveler Thank you so much! Fortunately I know a good building inspector that I can hire to discuss. Thanks for the early warning!
  4. @Iggy Thank you sooo much for telling me! I will have to plan for this!

  9. Thank you @Iggy! Now that you explain this makes perfect sense!
  10. Dear Smart People, This is a valve situated inside my house that turns the water on/off to an exterior garden hose. First position: As per the photo. The handle is currently as far clockwise as it will go. Second position: If you turn the valve counter clockwise, the second position occurs when the valve lines up so that it is vertical as is the blue pipe. So what do you think? Is the valve in the photo open or closed? Do you happen to know what this type of valve is called? Once we work this out, I will label the pipe! I think that the kind and industrious couple who used to own this house missed this pipe because every other pipe in the house is carefully labelled! Many thanks!
  11. Seems to be a recentish change in policy for volunteers.
  12. @thepulsiphyer Welcome! Also from Ontario! We need to spread the word among the saints who volunteer for US church activities. Be careful what you say to US border guards. Often telling them that you are volunteering in the States is not acceptable https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/saskatoon/volunteer-music-festival-us-ban-1.5303255 We have had people ‘working’ in the US temples turned away at the border.
  13. Proud of you, Third Hour team! Great job 😇
  14. I attended an evangelical church today. Wooo! Rock band! Strobe lights! Noise! Noise! People standing and swaying to the music and clapping hands. A thinly veiled sermon on the correct political party for the upcoming election. After 3/4 hour I thanked my friend for the invite to the blessing ceremony for her young relative and I fled. And lots and lots of coffee! Coffee fumes! Coffee fumes! The people were exceptionally fun, kind, and interesting. Another flavour of Christianity and other than the political prompting from the pulpit, a positive experience. If the LDS decided to change the service to be similarly lively, I am sure that I would get used to it. Lovely people 💜
  15. @SpiritDragon Thanks so much! I had decided that you had left the forum so I stopped checking for your response. I agree with you about Justin. I would like to see the back of him. I am amazed that Justin gets away with the things that he does. He interfered in the objectiveness of our judicial system! How dare you! What more do you need to do to get voted out of office? And the dressing up thing? Could you grow up please? I once invited a nonmember to an lds Halloween dance. We had coordinated outfits. I was southern belle and he was to be a southern beau. I arrived in my elaborate getup with all the trimmings. When I was rolled out of the car with the big skirt and parasol, there was a group of young woman at the curb. They had assembled to prevent me from killing my beau who unbeknownst to me had donned blackface. That was a very longtime ago and everyone knew it was deeply wrong. I think he was making a statement about our former exclusion of blacks from the priesthood. Anyway. No one was happy. From the youngest to the oldest, we knew this was not a good thing to do. I teach young people in their 20s. At least 1/2 are brown. I am involved in the structure that prods them into the job market. They are a mixture of ambition laziness and sheer foolishness that drives me crazy. We are increasingly brown in the University population so racial tension is the very last thing we need. I see the conservative ad as an invite to those looking for a way to keep back the non -white tide. This invite scares the hell out of me. i really don’t know what to do about this election. The PCs must have had a lot of meetings during which they pitched ideas, discussed these ideas, and approved that ad. I suspect that if we were to have a record of racial groups who graduate from UNI we would see that the future of some parts of the country will be brown. We are multicoloured and we need to embrace this. Anyway thanks so much for your comprehensive responses! What a miserable election!
  16. And then there were none also called Indian Island, is quite good by same author
  17. @scottyg Reminds me of the ‘who would you throw out of the boat’ questions that people used to ask as under graduates. I am not in favour of throwing people out of boats!
  18. It was so difficult read...oh my...I only made it through because I hope to attend a book club that assigned the book! Now I have to look up the hot zone! Oh my! Read the review! No no no!
  19. Doing so-so. Read Radium Girls about women working with radioactive materials in northern states from WWII forwards. So depressing! But incredibly well researched and written. I was really impressed by the husbands of these women. They stood by there wives through it all!
  20. Tennessee https://www.workforce.com/2019/05/08/workplace-civility-shouldnt-be-something-we-have-to-legislate/. WARNING! There is at the very end of this article some profanity inserted by the lawyer describing this new law. Thus, I would not click on this link. I include it only as backup for the quote below. The quote below has no profanity. For example, consider Tennessee’s Healthy Workplace Act. It encourages anti-bullying and respectful workplace policies by granting immunity to an employer from lawsuits alleging negligent or intentional infliction of emotional distress if that employer adopts such a policy. Tennessee even provides a Model Abusive Conduct Prevention Policy [pdf]. As originally drafted, Tennessee’s law only applied to public employers. Last week, Tennessee amended it to apply to all employers in that state. Bravo to Tennessee for taking a stand against abusive bosses and other bullies at work. But also, how sad that we need a law to tell employees to treat each other like, well, like people. The policy prohibits employees from: Repeated verbal abuse in the workplace, including derogatory remarks, insults, and epithets; Verbal, nonverbal, or physical conduct of a threatening, intimidating, or humiliating nature in the workplace; or The sabotage or undermining of an employee’s work performance in the workplace. And it requires supervisors to: Provide a working environment as safe as possible by having preventative measures in place and by dealing immediately with threatening or potentially violent situations; Provide good examples by treating all with courtesy and respect; Ensure that all employees have access to and are aware of the abusive conduct prevention policy and explain the procedures to be followed if a complaint of inappropriate behavior at work is made; Be vigilant for signs of inappropriate behaviors at work through observation and information seeking, and take action to resolve the behavior before it escalates; and Respond promptly, sensitively and confidentially to all situations where abusive behavior is observed or alleged to have occurred. Such admirable goals. It’s just so sad that we need to legislate them into existence
