  1. are you sure BOM doesn't mean bomb, like "The Book of Mormon is da BOM!" :)
  2. I'm guessing you have a talk tomorrow and you're preparing it the last minute
  3. Helaman 10:4-11 The Lord is talking to Nephi.
  4. This is what I mean though, the word God isn't the name of God, it's just a title given to Him, just like Dad is a title and not a name (pardon me if any of you are named Dad ). Therefore using the title God isn't the same using God's NAME in vain, since God's name isn't God. I've seen a few folks on this site who hyphenate God like G-d. What do you have to say on this matter?
  5. I love the assumption that she's guilty lol! I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned but the "murderer's" state of mind at the time of the act is pretty important in determining whether it is actually murder (murder in a more legal sense). My point is that if Casey Anthony or someone else is unable to understand the consequences of the action or if the person is under the age of accountability (age 8). This is what makes this such a gray matter. The quote from D&C mentioned above isn't so clear cut as it may seem. Acts of self defense are considered murder (Nephites defending their land and freedom against the Lamanites). In cases of cold blooded murder where the murderer is aware of what is happening, (like Casey Anthony in my opinion) is responsible for her act, D&C 48;?? DOES take effect and she will not be forgiven.
  6. I've seen this here and other places on occasion and was wondering, is replacing the "o" with a hyphen done to avoid repetition of God's name or to avoid taking the name of God in vain? I was curious to see what others think about this as my thoughts are that God is more a title than a name, which means that replacing God with G-d, which is simply another title, is self-defeating.
  7. I apologize to bytebear and others, I didn't see your comments at first, they are also equally great!!
  8. this has got to be the best answer to my previous question of why no one has found a descendant of the prophet outside of Emma.
  9. Ward clerk, he'll be in charge of this or possibly an assistant clerk in charge of membership records, depending on how big your ward is.
  10. I do know that the RLDS (community of Christ) avidly denies that JS practiced polygamy, they claim it started with Brigham Young. Proof that he did father a child through a plural wife would further any integrity they have left. Another thing I've always found interesting with this, my understanding is that the Lord called for plural marriage to "raise seed unto [Him]" (Jacob 2:30). Brigham Young a LOT of children, as did P.P. Pratt and others. My question is, why was the prophet JS commanded to take on multiple wives (I've heard 27 confirmed, more or less), why can't we find any progeny? Did he have extremely bad luck or was there another reason? Does anyone know anything on this matter?
  11. That's been the consensus here so far. The JS received the lesser priesthood from John the Baptist and the greater from the three you mentioned. As I stated in an earlier post, I suspect Lehi received the greater priesthood in a similar way JS received it.
  12. I love how there always seems to be a quote from Joseph Smith to refute anything said by Joseph Smith Before I err more I just want to reemphasize my point that the Aaronic priesthood relied on linage but the Melchizedek did not. That explains why Lehi had the priesthood, i.e. authority to ordain others etc, while not being of the tribe of Levi. I was basing my knowledge of my previous fact on section 107 of D&C (toward the beginning) and Jesus the Christ. Elder Talmage explains that John the Baptist couldn't "baptize with fire and the Holy Ghost" because he didn't have the higher priesthood. This is also backed up in Hebrews (ch 7?) a little where Paul explains the importance of the Melchizedek priesthood.
  13. No prophet had the greater priesthood until Christ restored it when He organized His church. It was taken from the earth in Moses time and replaced with the lesser, or preparatory priesthood until that time. It's in D&C 100 something (I think 107)
  14. It explains perfectly why Lehi and descendants didn't have Aaronic priesthood but doesn't really explain how they received the Melchizedek priesthood, especially since no one in Jerusalem had it at the time.
  15. I feel like all previous comments were just awesome. I would just like to quickly add that if he can get to the point where he WANTS to quit but can't, THEN you have alcohol dependency. When you get to that point, and if he is struggling to let it go, there are resources (as I'm sure you are aware of given your career choice) out there for you. LDS Family Services The link is for LDS Family Services, even if there isn't an agency in your area, there are at the least GREAT talks on the website, great for a FHE.
  16. FINALLY getting some help with this, thank you Sachi001 :)
  17. Any ward with the word satellite in it HAS to be cool!
  18. Book of Mormon Seminary Teacher Resource Manual - Final Judgment and Intermediate Judgment Your answer is in the first two sentences of this talk. There will be a Final Judgment and it hasn't happened yet. The book of Revelation is pretty clear on this topic as well. Christ will come and purge the earth, He will reign for the millennium, THEN there will be a Final Judgment.
  19. I will rephrase your first interpretation. A person must be resurrected before he/she is judged. The key to what I've been saying is that the resurrection of the dead will end before the FINAL judgment, huge emphasis on FINAL. That is what I'm trying to explain. A select few have received their exaltation already as you have mentioned in the case of Abraham. About the second comforter, I am mistaken, meaning that although I imagine that Abraham did receive it in his mortal life, he has in addition been exalted since then. My main point is that there exists an event called the FINAL judgment in which all those beings who have lived and died on this earth (with the VERY rare exception of being exalted before hand as in the case of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) Now, before THIS event takes place, anyone who has not been already resurrected will be so that everyone who has lived on this earth will have a body for his or her judgment.
  20. Are you saying the final judgment has already started?
  21. It's not an assertion!! It's scripture!! What do you think Job and Nephi meant when they said that in their FLESH they will see God? (2 Nephi 2:4) This isn't some obscure pseudo-doctrine or my opinion, this is a scriptural fact. The resurrection of the dead started with Christ (which means Abraham wasn't resurrected until AFTER Christ) and the resurrection will END BEFORE the final judgment. And by the way, Abraham received the second comforter, NOT the final judgment, there is a difference between having your exaltation promised to you BEFORE you even die. Alma was promised just that in Mosiah 26:20. This DOES NOT mean there will not be a final judgment for him. To better your understanding of fundamental doctrine, I would suggest reading Jesus the Christ (toward the end of the book), any of the institute manuals, or even consult with your local priesthood leadership. They will all confirm these truths for you.
  22. I'll try to make this as clear as I can, a special few have already been resurrected with Christ (1 Cor. 15:20), the faithful saints who have passed away will resurrect in the MORNING of the first resurrection (i.e. the Second Coming), others will resurrected during the millenium, and the wicked will be resurrected after the millenium. This means that all WILL be resurrected by the time the final judgment occurs, BUT NOT ALL AT THE SAME TIME. Does that help?
  23. good question MarginofError about the tithing, they actually can declare "full paying" status since they can't pay on winnings. You are right though about that being bothersome, I guess it would bother me too but I just have this philosophy that if I don't take the money and put it to good use it'll go to someone else will get it and do something foolish like buy a gold doggie house for their poodle or something
