  1. I have to chime in here. I have been hit on both sides of those accusations. I try very hard not to accuse anyone of being a nutcase or a cultist, etc. In reality conspiracies do exists. That is why their are laws against them. Lucifer conspired against God, Judas conspired against Jesus, the founding fathers conspired against King George, and the Book of Mormon is full of conspiracies. We all know that bad events have happened and are going to happen again but when I talk about it with members they say I am too extreme. I don't even leave the realm of church doctrine. When I talk to non-members about the church they say I am in a cult. I know what I believe is true and that is all that matters to me. I am glad you believe some of it and not all of it. Some of it is true and some is not. If you said it was all a bunch of hooey or it is all true then I would think you are an extremist. The truth of it is all you can do it read, ponder, and pray. Since you are not directly involved there is know way for you to know the complete truth. And even if you knew the truth what can you do about it? What if all they say is true, how would that affect you? And it seem that in that article that was posted about the BYU professor that he got in trouble not because of his views but because of how he was presenting it. He wasn't following BYU procedure on publishing his papers. Or that is how it seems according to that article. Again, we are not involved so we don't know the truth of it. And you are the naive one. There are many members that will fall away when put to the test. We just haven't really had any hard test lately. But how many active members fell away when Joseph Smith died, or how many fell way when when they had to trek west. Activity in the church is not a good guide on how strong a persons faith is. We had 3 families leave the church this past year because they read some bad material. They were very active and many people were shocked. I have read and know of others who have read bad material but haven't left. When the time comes I bet you will be really surprised on how many people really leave when put to the test. Just stay in the middle of the church and stay with the temple members. They are the strongest, in my opinion.
  2. 1. Take inventory on how much you use in a month and multiply by 12. Remember that some items you won't need if you loose power (which happens in most emergencies) like dishwasher soap. 2. We lost power in an ice storm years back and had no power for a week. I put the clothes in the bath tub of warm soapy water and had the kids stomp on it. I got the clothes and kids washed at the same time. But if it is a short time emergency then clean clothes wont matter and if it is a long time then you will probably have to move out of the apartment especially if you lose water because you can't flush the toilet, pew! Try having a water fast where you turn off the water for a day to see how many things are affected by not water. Then try it for electricity, internet, tv, phone, etc. That will give you an idea what to prepare for. 3. You will probably have to eat the dog. Remember dog meat is lean so you will have to cook it like venison. Just joking about that, mostly. 4. Get a hand powered grain mill with steel discs so you can grind different kinds of grains. Some grains have oil which will gum up stone grinding wheels. Get a dutch oven, a camp stove with extra fuel, and any other camping supplies that you are missing. 5. A .22 rifle like a Ruger 10/22 is good. It is light and has a lot of attachment so you can customize it easily. .22's is good because the ammo is cheep and light, and it is a very common caliber so you can use it to trade for other items. An it is powerful enough to kill most vermin. The Israelis used to use it for a sniper rifle. A 20 gauge shotgun with bird shot or rock salt is good for indoor defense because it is hard to miss and the light shot won't go through the walls and hit someone else. The problem with shotguns is that the ammo is heavy. You will probably be using the guns more for defense than hunting. People will want your stuff because they didn't prepare and they will be desperate. You should also get a good survival knife, some mace, and learn to make snares. Most of the things you ask are easy to find on the internet. Literally just type the question in your search bar. And the you need to practice the things that you learn. The problem you will run into is not having enough time to study everything there is to learn. I read about making nets and then I tried it until I could make a hammock comfortably. Unfortunately a lot of things are hard to practice in an apartment. like making a generator or large crops. Just focus on what you can learn and do. I was really into herb gardens because I could do those in pots inside. By the way, a lot of herbs are medicinal. Learn skills that will make you valuable in a group. Anything medicinal will be of high value so maybe you can be the medicine woman. Anyway good luck with you adventure!
  3. If we magically avoided starvation and magically lost our tech then we would probably use that magic to fix it. Poof!It would really depend on what God wants to happen. He gave us the knowledge in the first place.
  4. I am still not clear on what you are saying. I agree that we need an eternal family according to God's plan but I don't think necessarily need a mortal family, community, or society to be celestial candidates. Moroni wasn't part of a society and he did very well spiritually. But I took this post to be mostly about the mortal life. In which case I disagree. A toaster is a luxury. Most things we currently have are luxuries. There are a many a homesteader who built his home/farm/etc. by himself. Daniel Boone is a good example of that. He moved to Kentucky to get away from people. He built a log cabin and a small farm by himself so he could attract a good wife. I worked in manufacturing for years and I can tell you that if we were to loose all our technology today but were to keep our knowledge that it would only take a fraction of the time it took to get here originally. Especially if it is money driven, which it always it. That is, of course, not taking into account any repairs to population or land caused by whatever disaster caused us to loose our technology. And we have had toasters way before we ever had electricity. And, yes, I have thought about that there is no way a person could make a cell phone. But again that is a luxuries and there isn't an item of necessity that a man can't make on his own.
  5. Still not clear on what you are saying. How does the Gospel require a community? By the "Gospel" do you mean the Plan of Salvation or The Good News about what Christ has done for us? And do you mean God needs a community for the Plan of Salvation to work for mankind as a whole, or that an individual needs a community to be redeemed? Do you mean just during the mortal state of our lives or are you including the post mortal existence? And Slamjet asked "Is it this or that?" and you said yes. Yes to which one? Also are you talking about spiritual progress, or scientific/worldly progress. So what exactly are you saying?
  6. This is totally my kind of topic! First of all the police wouldn't come to your door to get your food in a crises like that. It would be way to dangerous for them. A lot of people will be putting up a nasty fight. And then they would have to find the food that anyone with any sense would hide. They would just try to keep you from getting more. Many have posted that you should follow the prophets (true), and have to share as a test of faith (true), and will eventually live the law of consecration (true), and if you do all that you are commanded and have faith the Lord will provide you help (true). I wanted to make comments on all those topics but you guys have covered it so well. I am glad that book made you think about what would happen but now you need to start acting on your question. Start learning everything you can and prepare as much as possible. You need to get yourself motivated. It helps if you can think outside the box. Think about seed storage and learning to garden. Learn to forage for wild edible plants. Not to toot my own horn but I can identify and prepare over 50 wild edible plants. Learn to can, dry, vacuum pack your own food. Oh, while I am thinking about it. I think some of the scenario posted are very similar to the situation in which the Mark of the Beast will present itself. And he causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their forehead. And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name." (Rev 13:16&17) The thing that you have to remember about a lot of these books and movies is that they never, to my experience, have the story right. If you want to know how things are really going to turn out you need to do more studying in the scriptures and church resources. There are a lot of books in the LDS book stores that cover those topics. But be forewarned that it can be pretty scary reading till you get to the parts about those who chose to follow after Christ. And I know I am suppose to quote it but I remember when studying about Abraham sacrificing his son that the church leaders said that God would never ask us to sacrifice our family. I assume that that would apply to letting our children starve also.
  7. I saw the video. Please explain your view further. Not sure what you mean.
  8. I know this is a bit off topic but that is so true. My wife is a born member and I was shocked to find out that she didn't know that Jesus visited the American Continent. She said "If that was true she would surly have heard about it." Never could get her to read the scriptures.
  9. You have view I like. How many hours a day did you work out?
  10. You guys are crazy fun on you topics! I love how unbalanced the views get on the Word of Wisdom. Why do we focus so on coffee and tea but ignore the minimizing of meat? What about processed foods, salts, over-indulgence, exercise, etc? It is a health code based on wisdom from God. There would never be a situation where God would ask you obedient and fat, or diobedent and healthy. Being fat and taking stimlulants are both unhealthy. So a question I ask a lot of church member is, if you can't drink tea then can you drink an extract of tea? Of course they say no. The I tell them that that is what caffeine is. I worked in a hazardous chemical distribution center for five years. One of the chemicals that I worked with a lot was caffeine. It caused us a lot of headaches to deal with. We shipped it to a soft drink manufacturing plant. It was listed as a Food Grade material which meant it was ok to eat but the twist was that it was also listed ad a Poison and to be treated as a hazardous material. So we couldn't ship it with the other Food Grades 'cause it was a poison, and we couldn't ship it with poisons 'cause it was a food. So I had to do a lot of research on it. And come to find out it is extracted from tea and coffee and is not chemically manufactured. And almost all of it comes from China. So the caffeine that is in you soda or medications comes from coffee or tea. My friend argues with me that Coke is ok to drink and caffeine is not against the Word of Wisdom. I tell him that it is against the Word of Wisdom because I have seed the Material Safty Data Sheet and know for a fact that it is very bad for you and is actually a poison. And I know God would not approve of us taking poison, plus it is an extract of coffee. Of course he says I am a hypocrite because he saw me drinking a Mountian Dew the other day. I said I am not a hypocrite. I said caffeine was bad for you, I didn't say I didn't drink it. I do struggle with it but I know it is wrong which means I can eventualy overcome it. But saying a sin is not a sin is worse because you will never try to overcome it. That was a long winded way to say don't justify your problems with the Word of Wisdom so that you don't have to deal with them. You don't have to have God tell you every little thing that is bad for you. You are full grown adults that can figure it out for yourselves. You are here to learn. You have the internet so there is no reason for you to not do the research. Or if you like an easier path then follow this motto: If in doubt, Don't.
  11. I call "Unfair"! There are some father's that go through that too. I was a stay home dad. My wife was a banker and I couldn't match her income plus I loved being with the kids more that working. She loved working more that being with the kids so our roles switched. So I got to stay home with 5 kids with strep. At the doctors office they called us the strep family because by the time that the last kids finished the first kid would catch in again. I have a friend who had triplets and every time I see them I get sick to my stomach. One infant at a time wore me out. I can just imagine how tiring three at a time are. He said when one would wake up he would wake up the rest of them. My mom said she would get all her house cleaning done while us kids were napping. That's crazy. Nap time is when I get my nap in. And dad's lose their stomach too, just for different reasons.
  12. I remember when I was new. It was such an awkward time for me. But I feel that I have adjusted well since. Get to know Pam. She is real nice. She is my only friend.
  13. I always worry about having a large supply of food and then get the order from the prophet to get out of Dodge lickity split, like Lot, and not have room for it in the truck! Wouldn't that bite a big one? Actually I worry about the situation that happened to Brigham Young, where he was fully prepared to go West but the group he went with was not so he shared with them and they all were hungry together. So though I don't have a year supply I am planning on more than that. I heard it said that in the tribulations of the last days that one of the big hurdles that the Saints have to overcome is to share what little they have saved with those who didn't.
  14. How the program is suppose to work, if done right, is the missionaries are to help you feel and recognize the Spirit. It is the Spirit above all that is the influencing factor in your conversion. It is God's Spirit conversing directly with your spirit. If you feel the Spirit and reject it then it doesn't matter what the message is. And if you don't feel the Spirit, then there won't be a true conversion and then again the message doesn't matter much. Only with a an acceptance of the Spirit does the message the missionaries bring matter. So if you meet the missionaries the first time and they help you feel and recognize the Spirit and if it is something that you have been desiring, whether you new it or not, then you will want to do what Christ asked you to do. Remember it is Christ's message and Christ that is asking, the missionaries are just representing him. Plus, I don't know if anyone remembers but the the question to commit to baptism was a part of the first discussion and was require for missionaries to ask. A lot don't ask because they are afraid to offend. And some are pushy. Usually it is the newer missionaries that are pushy.
  15. I personally feel that learning your herbal medicines is the best bet for long term. I spend a fair amount of time studying herbal plants and know a lot of the basic can be covered by local plants, such as anti-septic, anti-bacterial, anti-spasmodic, analgesic, expectorant, etc. But if you have to have a specific medication then you will have to research per case. I try to store a years supply of basic medications because I have kids that I know will get sick, and in an emergency situation you won't have time to make many of your own meds. Of course the best security against End of Days illnesses and ailments is to have worthy priesthood holders with you. Testimony: Since I started eating right and using medicinal plants I haven't gotten sick once (2 years) and I have school age children so...
  16. I don't mean to sound nit picking, but I find that if people have different meaning for words that it can cause quite a bit of confusion. I always found that quote misleading in concept. The opposite of love is hate or indifference. That is because there is three distinct ways people use the word love. Love = intense liking (i.e. l love my car. I love love my life. I love my friend. Love = caring (i.e. I care about my kids. I care about my savior.) Love = romantic feelings, infatuation (i.e. I have romantic feelings for her.) The opposite of like is hate. The opposite of caring is indifference which is also called true love or Christ like love, charity, etc The opposite of Falling In Love is Falling Out Of Love. If the quote was "The opposite of Christ like love is indifference" then that would ring true. If you can replace "love" with one of these synonyms it will give the conversation a clearer meaning. Again, sorry to complain but the quote always irked me.
  17. Well I can see why the new members don't respond as much as the senior people. You guy take all the good answers. All has been given, off to the next thread.
  18. If I had a choice that is how I would want to die. Doing God's work.
  19. It's just a hook, so everyone will see me. I noticed that if you put "anti" in your title you get a lot more responses. In the THOUSANDS!!! I am not new. I have had an account for 2 days now. I am glad I have found this site so I can express myself around members that I don't go to church with. Not that I don't like the members at my church, because I do. Just that I don't get a lot of opportunities to spend time with them and get to know them on a more personal level. I surely don't get many opportunities to speak with them on a deep level, 'cause that takes time. Temple trips are a good time to get to know people but now that I am in a family ward it is hard to get rides where kids are not distracting you. "Why are you always talking about boring stuff!" they say. So I guess you can look at my "page" to see what I like. But to let you know, my interest are much greater that what I have listed. The only thing I don't like is DRAMA!!! drama... If I bother you let me know, it is very hard to offend me. And I like profiling so.... there is that. And I am single...ladies.... Just joshing...I am WAY to picky after that last one. ($all about the money$) So..... Just let me know if you want to chat. I will be spending a lot of time in the forums. Thanks for the site, Amen!
