  1. You must have really hated President Monson when he made the claim in General Conference that God helped him to find his 5 dollars then.
  2. Also assumed is that the priesthood ban was done because of someones thoughts that one race is 'better' than another- the definition of racism. We don't have sufficient evidence for that either.
  3. That's where you come in. Weather or not we have a solid quoted revelation isn't really the point. The Word of Wisdom is "a principle with promise" which is I have a testimony of this principle as it applies to Coffee and Tea. In the end, personal Testimony is worth a thousand prophetic quotes.
  4. Casting Crowns comes to mind. The brethren repeatedly tell us not to compare ourselves to others. It only leads to feelings of inadequacy. Instead, realize when you are growing and when you are not. This is the best way to judge yourself. The other piece of advice I have is to engage in intimacy even if you're not feeling it. It's called 'making love,' for a reason. It's not all about satiating lusts. It really is sad that you came here for help and the people who should have been the first to offer you support instead decided to attack what you already realized was a problem. Keep your chin up- they're not the ones who will be judging you in the end. That belongs to the God of Love. We're told that no man who is continually, honestly trying will fall short of Celestial Glory.
  5. You're actually completely right. Bishops are encouraged to ask for longer answers, actually. The Recommend Interviews are supposed to be a time to not only declare your worthiness, but also to explore testimonies of principles. A simple 'yes' or 'no' doesn't go nearly as far as telling about a time you struggled with something and overcame it, or telling about something you may not be at the level you feel you should be.
  6. Good point. Sorry I overstepped. I'm not a judge in Israel, and don't have the right to imply the accusations I did.
  7. So what you're saying then is you can not answer the Temple Recommend question with a 'yes'? I live in Florida as well, by the way. Fort Walton Beach. Probably not as far south as you, but it is completely possible to mow your lawn with a shirt.
  8. here's a link to the letter you're referring to. http://mormonstories.org/other/TRI%20Questions%20120911.pdf It mentions both.
  9. That would require an incredible amount of foresight. Joseph had this vision in 1823, and didn't complete the BoM until 1830. I don't think a 17 year old con man (which is what he would be if indeed he made it all up) could think that far ahead.
  10. "In 2012, the question about wearing the garments was slightly modified to clarify that the garments should not be worn separately." Temple (LDS Church) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
  11. Didn't know any of that. I was put off of his books by his explanation for why he chose to include some things and leave others out in 'Sarah'. Thanks for the info.
  12. Leave in Vampires and you're left with a boring book I've only been a member for two and a half years now, so I haven't had too much of a chance to read 'mormon fiction.' What I have read has been mixed reviews- exactly like non-LDS books. I appreciate the idea that LDS books are like the starwars prequels, but with many of them, it can't be helped. We know Joseph Smith gets martyred. We know Jesus comes back. Some are able to get past this. For example, the Tennis shoes series has been a fun read and 'Messiah' and 'Master', take a pretty conservative look (as far as interpretation) at the Gospels. Then there is the 'Millenial Glory' series and 'the work and the glory,' as well as Orson Scott Card's trilogy on the wives of the patriarchs. All of them are exactly like the article describes. Even so, though, they have their place, and are not completely worthless just because they are predictable and preachy.
  13. When I first joined the church, I started going to gospel doctrine instead of Gospel Principles for sunday school. I specifically remember one of the High Priests (not the teacher) going on and on about how when you are sealed to a spouse, the sealing to the parents is obsolete. His logic was that if you are together forever with your spouse in an exalted state, you can not also be together forever with your parents, because that would take you away from your 'sphere' of control. I recognize this as an apostate belief. However, I also see it as a possibility that a Stake President could hold to apostate belief (the second counselor in my bishopric mentioned his mission president when he served in Japan being excommunicated for telling sister missionaries he had received revelation that Polygamy was going to be reinstated soon, and that they could become his wives) and the Bishop towing the line in the name of 'sustaining' his local leader. After all, we have the stories of Joseph F. Smith and the Sandwich Islands, where pretty much the entire Islands had apostasized. Not willing to say this is what happened here, but I'm also not willing to call a lady a liar just because I'd rather believe in an anonymous Bishop and SP. Overall though, I agree with your observations.
