  1. Ate all 3 meals there yesterday! Free Speech and freedom of religion taste great!
  2. You could always join Community of Christ- they are basically a Restoration version of UU.
  3. No we don't... You don't make someone understand why God's laws lead to joy and that what God calls sin leads to misery... you teach righteous principles and the people decide whether they want to follow God's precepts or follow the natural man. "When they are learned they think they are wise..." applies to this "knowledge" of the OP's daughter.
  4. I was under the impression that the thread was geared towards those who believe in God and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To make such a claim and yet reject the clear dictates of God is rebellion. Wickedness never was happiness. The response I gave is the only reasonable response to the OP. The church has no need to try to justify their position "in light of science."... God's laws are God's laws. Accept them or reject them. It's rather simple.
  5. As in all things it all comes down to choice and how we choose to follow the laws of God. We can be like Nephi and know that the Lord gives us no commandment we can't keep, or we can be like the world that teaches that "if it feels good, do it". One leads to life eternal, the other to an eternal separation from the fullness of God's glory. We have to decide for ourselves which is most important to us... fleeting pleasure or a fullness of joy that will last forever.
  6. Point of clarification: George P. Lee wasn't "molesting children". He had sex with his children's 14 year-old babysitter after he was called as a Seventy (if the accusation is actually true).
  7. If you go here and search for "South Yorkshire" you will find the local Wards: Find a Meetinghouse Near You | Mormon.org
  8. To unceremoniously fire Dr. Daniel Peterson via e-mail is beyond the pale. And to think- Bradford didn't even give the other board members that courtesy. Apparently, Midgley is still unaware of these developments- being somewhere foreign with no internet access.
  9. The were a number of "Church of Christ" groups, both in and out of the Restoration- doesn't narrow it down much. I look forward to any other info you may find.
  10. What are the names of the people you suspect of starting a "splinter group"? I am fairly knowledgeable about the different churches/movements since the Restoration in 1830.
  11. Which GA example should you follow?... those up to and including George Albert Smith or those afterwards. Seems any one of those could be a good example if "following the brethren" is a priority as far as beards go.
  12. You might try other Kytes in Kanab and see if any are related.
  13. The Word of Wisdom is clear that the LORD prefers that we eat only a little meat, and only in times of cold or famine. That is not the same as commanding not to eat meat. The WofW was not given by way of commandment... but it is His preference for our physical salvation.
  14. I am glad you have found a place to belong in the LDS Church. It makes my heart leap for joy that you now have the Book of Mormon in your life. Its value is beyond compare in understanding the love that our Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have for each of us. May you be blessed as you study its words and in your journey in the LDS Church. Hopefully, I will get to meet you in Zion someday.
  15. I have made it a point to not discuss polygamy. You guys say it OK at times. I don't. 'Nuff said... One difference would be Temple rites. I, personally, believe the washings and annointings done at Kirtland are correct and will be re-instituted when the Temple in Zion in built. I believe, as the "Lectures on Faith" teach, that Heavenly Father is a a personage of perfect Spirit, and Jesus is a personage of perfect tabernacle (flesh). The main differences are ideas advanced in Nauvoo vs. prior church teachings.
  16. To be honest I don't know the name of the exact charge, it was akin to "statutory rape" and it was a misdemeanor. He did "time served" (the time between arrest and verdict) and 3 years(?) probation. He was 19 and slept with his 15 yo girlfriend.
  17. Haun's Mill massacre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ***BTW, I am not from Kirtland. I chose the name "Kirtland Saint" because the teachings of the church in the Kirtland era best represent my own beliefs.
  18. It's like we are having two separate conversations... I surrender. :)
  19. I believe you may putting the church in a situation that it would not want to be put in. What you seem to be saying is that they have an official policy to appease the boogey-man hunters (an absolute zero-tolerance policy), but in practice they don't actually follow the policy. I don't know that they would concur or want such a thing implied. I think they understand that people understand that pedophilia based sex offenses are far different then a young man lacking a sufficient frontal lobe to anticipate the consequences of sleeping with a girl a few years younger then him.
  20. You keep talking about what the church "won't do", when I know as a matter of personally observed fact that have done the exact thing you say they "won't do". Your dogmatic statements don't change what I know to be the case. But this whole exchange is now pointless... you don't believe me and I know your wrong. I will leave it at that.
  21. It is easily explained... individual circumstances DO matter. And you are right, my story can't be proven, but the implication that I may be lying would be offensive, if I chose to be offended, which I don't.
  22. Yet they knowingly have. And this is within the last 3-4 years.
  23. I don't know what to tell you, they let my cousin, and the church is fully aware of his past conviction. And this isn't a cousin I just heard about, he is one of my best friends, and I am like an Uncle to his kids. I know the situation.
