  4. Most Precious Gift "The Gift Holy Ghost" The Holy Ghost is a personage of spirit, a separate and distinct member of the godhead. He is a witness or testifier of the power of God, the divinity of Christ, and the truth of the restored Gospel. Many through out history in all nations have sought diligently to commune with the heavens and gain the light of gospel truth. They have felt the influence of the Holy Ghost and confirm the truth of the gospel. What is the difference between the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost? The gift of the Holy Ghost is the privilege—given to people who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ, been baptized, and been confirmed as members of the Church—to receive continual guidance and inspiration from the Holy Ghost. Joseph Smith said we believe in the gift of the Holy Ghost being enjoyed now as much as it was enjoyed in the days of the first Apostles. We believe in this gift in all its fulness, power, greatness, and glory. A person may be temporarily guided by the Holy Ghost without receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost however, this guidance will not be continuous unless the person is baptized and receives the laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost. We read in Acts 10 that the Roman soldier Cornelius received inspiration from the Holy Ghost so that he knew the gospel of Jesus Christ was true. But Cornelius did not receive the gift of the Holy Ghost until after he was baptized. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that if Cornelius had not received baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost, the Holy Ghost would have left him Today people who are not members of the Church learn by the power of the Holy Ghost that the Book of Mormon is true. But that initial testimony leaves them if they do not receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. They do not receive the continuing assurance that can come to those who have the gift of the Holy Ghost In the Doctrine and Covenants, the Lord calls the gift of the Holy Ghost “the unspeakable gift.” It is the source of testimony and spiritual gifts. It enlightens minds, fills our souls with joy, teaches us all things, and brings forgotten knowledge to our remembrance. The Holy Ghost also will also show unto us all things what we should do.” President James E. Faust added that the gift of the Holy Ghost “is the greatest guarantor of inward peace in our unstable world.” President Gordon B. Hinckley taught, “How great a blessing it is to have the ministering influence of a member of the Godhead.” Think of what this means, the ability and the right to receive the ministrations of a member of the Godhead, to commune with infinite wisdom, infinite knowledge, and infinite power! As with all gifts, this gift must be received and accepted to be enjoyed. When priesthood hands granted and were laid upon your head to confirm you a member of the Church, you heard the words, “Receive the Holy Ghost.” This did not mean that the Holy Ghost unconditionally became your constant companion. Scriptures warn us that the Spirit of the Lord will “not always strive with us.” When we are confirmed, we are given the right to the companionship of the Holy Ghost, but it is a right that we must continue to earn through obedience and worthiness. We cannot take this gift for Granted President Woodruff taught that there is one that is more precious than all the rest. President Woodruff said, "You may have the administration of angels, you may see many miracles; ... but I claim that the gift of the Holy Ghost is the greatest gift that can be bestowed upon us." Heavenly Father promises this great gift to all who are baptized and keep their baptismal covenant. There are important things you must do so that the holy ghost will be your constant companion. Heavenly Father gives the Holy Ghost to those who obey Him. You obey Him when you keep his commandments. You obey him when you choose to be baptized. You obey Him when you pray each night and day and study His words in the scriptures. You obey Him when you obey your parents. You obey Him when you are kind, honest, patient, and loving toward others. You obey him by attending church, your class's and school. You obey Him by remembering His Son, Jesus Christ, and trying to do what He would have you do. when you bore you're Testimony you honor him. As you do these things , you will be worthy to have the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost throught your life. Why is it important to have the Holy Ghost as a companion? Well for me I was without the Holy Ghost for some of my life. Without the spirt of the Holy Ghost it is hard to make decisions and often you make the wrong one. But with the holy ghost. I can tell you the difference is night and day..The Holy Ghost will guide you and help you to choose the right.. I've been doing alot of reeding lately the last few months and this is one of my most favorite scripatures in D&C 11:12-14). And now, verily I say unto thee, put your trust in that spirts which leadeth to do good--yea, to do justly, to walk humbly to judge righteously; and this is my spirt. verily, verily, I say unto you I will impart unto you of my spirts which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy and then shall ye know , or by this shall you know , all things whatsoever you desire of me which are pertaining unto things of righteousness, in faith believing in me that you shall receive. These are some definations that I found and think that the Holy Ghost reminds of A Blanket/comforter- Another name for the Holy Ghost is the comforter. This comforter is warm and soft and when you wrap it around your self you feel safe and secure. This is the same feeling that the Holy Ghost can give you. You can have a warm, peaceful feeling inside and feel safe when you listen to the Holy Ghost. Candle- The holly ghost will help you focus and see clearly when you may be lost or confused. A Seashell- If you listen closely and put the seashell next to your ear you can hear the ocean. You also have to listen closely to hear the Holy Ghost because he only speaks to some of us in a loud voice. He speaks mainly to our mind and heart and spirit and if you aren't paying attention, you may not hear him. A Teddy Bear- Yes a Teddy Bear... The Holy Ghost will remind you to "bear" one another's burdens and "bear" your testimony. How can you know when you have the Holy Ghost with you? When you feel love or joy or peace or patience, when you are gentle and kind, you are feeling the influence of the Holy Ghost in your life. Sometimes we say that the Holy Ghost "whispers." We hear His voice with more than our ears--we "hear" Him with our minds and our hearts D&C 8:2 Yea, behold I will tell you in your mind and in your hearts, by the Holy Ghost, which shall come upon you and which shall dwell in your heart. President Ezra Taft Benson gave this important counsel: "Pray to Heavenly Father to bless you with His Spirit at all times. ... The Holy Ghost is ... a gift from Heavenly Father. ... He whispers to you in a still, small voice to do right. When you do good, you feel good, and that is the Holy Ghost speaking to you. The Holy Ghost is a wonderful companion. He is always there to help you." (Ensign, May 1989, page 82.) This is a little thing i found when doing some more research for this talk and I would like to read it to you. Its like a little riddle Who speaks in a still, small voice that is sometimes felt more than heard? Who can bring a feeling of comfort and peace when you are sad, lonely, or frightened? Who brings a warm, sweet feeling into your heart when you think about Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father or study the scriptures Who can help teach you right and wrong? Who encourages you to do good deeds for others? Who can help you understand the gosple ? The answer to all of these questions my wonderful brothers and sisters is the Holy Ghost. Brigham young said "Be careful and not turn away the small still voice; it will teach you what to do and where to go; it will yield the fruits of the kingdom. Tell the brethren to keep their hearts open to conviction, so that when the Holy Ghost comes to them, their hearts will be ready to receive it." When you are baptized, confirmed and told to receive the Holy Ghost, and keep your promises to Heavenly Father, He will bless you with the greatest gift in this world: the gift of the Holy Ghost. Brothers and Sisters I want to bare my Testimony onto you. I know Joseph Smith restored this wonderful full Gospel and I thank him for that I dont know where I would be without it.... I know this church is true in which we have to learn more about the Gospel and learn to do things he would have us do.. I know the Book Of Mormon is a true and another amazing Testimony of Jesus Christ. I know we have a living profit. I know our Bishopric, Teachers, Leaders guide us every day... I want to Thank the Bishop and Stake President for all the double checking and learning that went on I want them to know I appreciate it. I want to thank all the members of this ward for thier patients and always being there when I have had a question and lately I have had many so thank you for being there...I want to thank my family mel and louise channer for being so understanding with my decision to be baptized and especially my grandparetns for being so strong in their beliefs in the Church and always letting the Spirit in when we visit and being kind and loving towards others.... I humbly say these words that the Spirt has guided me to say to you in the hope each of you can take something from what I have said and use in you're life in the name of thy wonderful son Jesus Christ. Amen
