  1. on the other hand...this was funny to me: in college, I attended a statewide judo tournament to support my roomate. He took 2nd place trophy for the entire state of Utah. The guy who won first place was the only other competitor in his age group etc. hahaha...(no joke) I watched little kids participate in the same tournament. The loser of each match usually burst into tears. I thought how ironic:The kid was probably the toughest kid in his school and peer group...but there he was just "a loser." Nevertheless: in spite of the false premises of political correctness it is an important leson to learn how to handle stress, even (or maybe especially) from temporary failures or losing your "dream" or goal.
  2. I think Jesus was making a knee slapping joke in Matt 7:9-10. Consider the scene: (my paraphrase) Son: "Dad, can I have a piece of bread?" Dad: "No kid, here chew on this stone." Son: "But Dad I'm hungry. Can I have some fish?" Dad: "Nope, but here, you can eat this snake."
  3. In the LDS book “A Marvelous Work and a Wonder” by LeGrand Richards, there is a classic dialogue. As I remember it, a Catholic Priest told the author something like this. “You Mormons do not realize the strength of your position. Catholics and Mormons both agree that Jesus Christ organized his church and endowed it with his Priesthood authority. The Catholics claim to be that same church today. Mormons claimed an apostasy occurred and corrupted the Catholic church, the authority was lost and later restored to the earth through Joseph Smith. It is an either/or situation. If the Catholics did fall into apostasy, then Protestants have no authority either because they broke off from the Catholic church and could not receive it from a failed church. The only way the true church with Priesthood authority could exist today would be by a new restoration from Jesus Christ or by the historical succession of the Catholic church. It can only be either the Catholics or Mormons.
  4. The Frankfurt temple in the democracy of West Germany was announced in 1981. Protests, complaints about the steeple being taller than other churches created contentions, discussions about permits, zoning, appeals, meetings, etc. etc. and other vestiges of bureaucracy and took 6 years before the temple was dedicated in 1987. In the meantime, one year later in 1982, the church announced the Freiburg temple in rigidly controlled, communist East Germany. It was dedicated in 1985, two years sooner than the Frankfurt temple!!
  5. Another obvious example about Sabbath and intentions:A soldier gets shot at or pulls duties on Sundays the same as any other day, to protect you! He is prepared to give his life for you if necessary. As one provocative email which made the rounds said “the only other person willing to do that for you is Jesus Christ” He or any right minded LDS Christian does not stop ministry or his mission on the Sabbath day. God judges hearts, intentions, sincerity, and personal motivations much more than “rules.” Maybe it requires life and death extreme experiences and situations to learn something about priorities. One combat wounded LDS soldier bore his testimony to me as he was dying because he gave his life for his country, freedoms, church and family. The fact that he smoked a cigarette occasionally, seemed terribly insignificant. Work (and service) on Sunday for the right reasons is honorable, NOT a violation of commandment. “When you are in the service of your fellow man you are only in service of your God”…. except on the Sunday?? (Mosiah 2:17) One of the first things Adam learned in Garden of Eden was he had to break one commandment (fruit) in order to follow a greater, more important commandment (follow Eve out of garden to multiply).
  6. Let 'em spend thousands of dollars on a foolish, frivoulous, law suit I certainly hope they will lose, badly. Let 'em get a grip on reality and centuries of years of history instead of clinging to some illiogical concepts of political correctness, nanny state mentality which encourages their whining, unrealistic senses, in defiance of sports, human nature and indvidual self reliance. I'll bet the suing parent voted for our current, inefficient, governmental leaders who believe the government should control all aspects of free agency, and independence and responsibility for one's own actions ,including a footbal team!

    Doubtful

The creation took 6 days. We are also told a day to the Lord is 1000 years to us....if the creation took 6000 years it doesn't take alot of imagination to guess maybe some form of evolution was occurring during that process of "creation." Conflicts between revelation vs science? At the time of Columbus, "science" said the earth was flat. DUH! Science was wrong. Hello? We have progressed abit since then....but not so much. A famous LDS Scientist Henry D. Eyring's father said in a university fireside I attended "when there is a conflict between science and revealed Gospel truths it is easy to explain...science is wrong" Surely there are contradictions...and maybe truths even change with situations....but if you have had a legitimate spiritual confirmation (testimony) of the eternal truth you know it was real.....which means it still is real. Nephi said "I know in whom I have trusted and Awake my soul,Rejoice O my heart and give no more plce for the enemy of my soul" 2 N 4: 19-28 Good stuff!
  8. Professional therapists will tell you you cannot just eliminate the thoughts and feelings...it is almost impossible. What you can do is replace them. It is called "guided imagery." When the bad thought, bad feeling comes, you recognize it, scream stop (psychically in your mind or soul), and replace it with a better thought or image. That image is one which works for you...a song, a scripture,a thought, a slogan,a pleasant experience you can instantly remember which replaces the bad thought. They used to teach resuscitation of a person who wasn't breathing by saying"out goes the bad air,in comes the good." Guided Imagery is poweful: I have a personal image which works for me in the situation you described: Best friend was about to (temple) marry a girl who had been very promiscuous (but repented). I said "I'd never be able to forgive her or forget He said "Bishop told her God forgave her and forgot ...You think you're better than God? That one question or phrase changed my life forever and made me tolerant and accepting. I often use that "guided image" to replace a bad thought or feeling. Another example, of a guided image which works for me as a retired warrior...when I feel road rage etc.I tell myself "this person is not the enemy, settle down." There is a current re-birth or fad for a similar guided image used during WWII when the Germans were bombing Britain:Poster shouted the slogan "Keep Calm and Carry On."
  9. High Priest's instructor said he was talking with a non-member about keeping the sabbath day Holy and used the concept of "Ox in the Mire." The non member did not understand the term Ox in the Mire" so he explained. Sitting at far end of the room, with my hearing aid battery dead, I also did not understand; why were we discussing Oscar Meyer weiners? (humor:Ox in the Mire sounds like Oscar Meyer)
  10. In the military Chaplaincy...Chaplains care for all, as children of the same Heavenly Father. They help LDS be better LDS, or a Catholic be a better Catholic or Lutheran be a better Lutheran or Jew be a better Jew etc. The Army Chaplain motto is "cooperation without compromise"....and the mission is to provide for the free exercise of religion, by supporting the living and honoring the dead. It is accepting and embracing of the common truths and values which all people of faith share, inclusion, not exclusion, rather than emphasis on the devisive differences of theology and doctrines. It is so much more rewarding and edifying than the civilian clergy boundaries...that it hurts to see the contrasts....within any religion....
  11. Dear Chaplain: Most LDS do not even know this.(Military)LDS Chaplains are supervised and endorsed by the Military Relations Committee of The Church of Jesus Christ (for approximately 50 years now.) The MilRelCom is very supportive and ecumenically, embracing of all Chaplains of all denominations. If a prospective Chaplain visitor wanted to visit BYU (or any) LDS institution and contacts the MilRelCom, I believe they will "roll out the red carpet" and facilitate and host the visit in any way possible...provide guides, escorts and a welcoming hand...including introductions, answering questions etc.
