  1. I am somewhat amazed at the lack of thinking many apply in coming up with what they believe G-d is. As an engineer and scientist I understand well why many of my fellow scientists are atheists. Several years ago I was involved in a public debate with the head of the Utah atheist’s society on the existence of G-d. The debate took place during our lunch break at work and lasted several weeks. To be honest I was having difficulty with the whole debate because my atheists friend did not seem to respond to my most important points. Finely I asked my friend to define what he thought was the definition of a G-d that we were debating about. This ended up to be quite difficult for him but when he finally defined G-d I conceded the debate because I did not believe any such G-d could exist anymore than he did.

I find that most Christian religions define G-d so counter to obviously observable things in our universe that if such a G-d was the option I had – I would not believe in G-d. The LDS concept of G-d is the only rhetorically sound and empirically viable G-d I have encountered.

    The Traveler

I think I'm speaking more of the personal relationship that is emphasized in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Or the personal God, that is the non Agnostic, non Atheist view that Christianity holds.

I am impressed by your mention of debating the Atheist in Utah. Sooner or later, I want to work up the ambition before I finish my degree to have an out of the blue anti-sola scriptural debate with the evangelicals that bounce around school handing out

Jack Chick Tracts to every person they come in contact with.

  2. This.

    A common Catholic lament.

It took me a while to learn that Prayer is not all about asking God for something. Prayer, in its simplest, is merely seeking to adjust your will to that of God's. If your prayer got answered, it means your will and God's will are aligned. If your prayer is not answered, it means your will and God's will are not aligned. Of course, God does not change for you. So, you get to change for Him...

But, if your faith is not such that you can let go of your will to seek a different path, then, nothing will happen. And so, God will never be there for you to believe.

It takes great courage and humility to do God's will. But, it doesn't ever happen that you can gain that without first having faith in Him.

    Hi Anatess,

I'm so glad that you have replied. This is where I find the contradiction. I understand exactly what your saying, I do not believe in the slot machine conception. But I think that is worth mentioning there is the dilemma I do not personally believe in a will to will alignment. I think if that was true, we would not see super high atheist achievers in life for say.

Consider Jesse Ventura, Ex, navy SEAL and Ex, grass roots Governor. Who has been quoted to say that, " Christianity is for the weak who need strength in numbers" Do you believe that his quality of life, has any direction connection with him personally trying to seek a will to will relationship. That is the contradiction that I find, in that philosophy and therefore, that is a big reason, why I have the feelings i do.

    Chime in friend. ...

  3. Its a personal problem of mine. I guess I'd say that I know God exist. But I do not believe in him.

With that being said, I noticed that nearly all churches use a star athlete in one form or the other, to try to recruit new members. I think listening to them talk makes me more of an agnostic then a Christian. I have a hard time swallowing anything about life, someone like Tim Tebow would have to tell me. or, many of the big time Catholic football athletes that are often interviewed on Catholic radio.

I'm just throwing that out here, I know God exists, but I think that all prayer is just babbling nonsense into the air for the most part. Because prayer has never worked for me.

  4. No!

No I don't think suicides end up in hell. There are so many different factors that can come into play, that we really can't judge, or assume that the consequences will be the same for everyone. For example, when mental illness is involved, is that person really capable of decision making in the same way that someone who is not is? And what about emotional pain? I was suicidal once, and looking back, I can see that I was clearly not in my right mind at the time. You might say I was "crazed with pain". That is the best way I can describe it. And what about situations, like the one portrayed in the movie Masada? A whole group of Jewish people committed suicide rather than be taken prisoner by the Romans and "allowing" their women to be raped, and those who were not killed to be sold in to slavery. Under the circumstances, I think they made the best, most honorable choice.

Also, I notice that you are Catholic. I don't know what Catholic's believe about hell but I suspect that our definitions and expectations may differ, and so that will change the answer to your question also.

yes, I want to say the definition of Hell in the Catholic church is of fire and brim stone.

  5. Suicide videos on youtube? What?

Yes, there are quite a few.

The famous Budd Dwyer suicide for one.

There is also the clip of the man, who was filmed in Fox News, shooting himself as he was running on foot. There are some videos of people jumping form buildings to their death as well.

There is also a very good HBO documentary on you tube, though I do not know the name. . I think some of these people are heroes, its like they where telling society you can't have me, since God abandon me.

  6. And that's why a lot of them are there... Not everyone is a winner

(I wouldn't call myself an alpha male-that phrase just sounds wrong, nor would I say I am desirable to the opposite sex, what with the social awkwardness, the dolls and my general lack of interest-which I often feel stems from the fact I am generally seen as undesirable, a vicious cycle)

I do agree with the whole desensitzation of the act that pornography has on people, but there are losers in this world and the demand is there, and always will be there.

Hey man, don't talk about yourself like that. So what if you have awkward hobbies.

Own the look dude, its all about balance. You should check out some Gregg Plitt,

Being an Alpha Male doesn't mean you have to run around like Hulk Hogan

Alpha males come in many shapes and sizes.

Look at Weird Al Yankovic and his hot wife, You think he isn't awkward?

There is also Nick Vucic the man with no arms and legs. Did you see that super babe he married ? man, I would kill to be that guy now, and he doesn't have arms and legs.

Its all about how you carry yourself. You should check out some Gregg Plitt, talks on you tube, that guy is a God amongst men. You just need to be mentored correctly.

  7. i meant more of a general harm to one, a non religious view

I think its harmful from a non religious view. After so many years of looking at it, a man can become limp, or only aroused by extremely hardcore footage.

Also, having unrealistic expectations about sexual acts. I had my fair share of pornography when I was younger.(teenager/early 20s) With in the last year I had visited a couple of adult sites again, and looking at it now in my 30's the only thing I can do is shake my head.

Most of the "Actors" in the films act so bizarrely when they are engaged in the act it is ridiculous.

You almost have to feel sorry for the "actors"; its like they have some kind of mental problems to act like that in front of a camera, then let people watch them. What more is the comments, that people leave on tube sites. Those in its self are disturbing; to think that sexual behavior is looked at as a sport and not an act of love between a husband and wife. The majority of men who leave comments are a bunch of losers who can never win a real woman over.

I think if your an Alpha Male you don't need it. Not to mention the people who put their photos up on Craig's List looking for sex.

I believe hell exist and that is what Hell is; Hell is where you go and have to put adds up on Craig'slist with your photos looking for NSA connections for eternity.

  8. See I don't believe that at all, no one in my family drinks or gambles or the like and yet I won't get to go to collage or anything.

I never drink or alter my conciousness in any way, and yet I am on the bottom rung, and that won't change.

It's nice to assume that alcohol and gambling destroys all households (however it is present in many I've seen, other family for example, and they are very successful people, and I abstain and have nothing).

But its flawed and rather silly to just make a broad assumption about that.

Sometimes people don't have the means to get ahead, there is always going to be poor people, people who can't rise higher, because-well education costs and where do you get the money for that?

As such depression and sadness kicks in and some people can't deal with it.

I can deal with my sadness and general bleakness of life, but I'd be lying if I said I never considered going to a bar for free peanuts and awful ambience.

You have nothing to loose when you have nothing at all.

No one wants to actually make anything better for the lower classes, just spout nonsense and take away the few things that they have because the better feel its wrong, because they could never understand why anyone would take to those things.

There are two sides to every coin, perhaps rather then blaming alcohol itself, you should find out the why. No one drinks because a stupid commercial tells them to, they drink because they want to forget their bland, joyless life.

Why wont' you get to go to college ? Community college as a start is very inexpensive.

Do you live with family? What are your opertunitites

I know much of what I'm posting from first hand experience. My father was an educated man, but you would never guess it to be so

He had taken LSD more then 300 times, according to my mother, and he also drank a pint of vodka every day. But that is why he was dead at 58.

A lot of the problem is, when your strung out, on porn or drugs, it changes your attitude.

I wasn't given a golden ticket in my life, by God or family. I am nearly 35 and have been working on an BS degree for 8 years. So please do not think I can not relate to you.

But through my experience, growing up in a house hold that used drugs, alcohol and pornography. I could see early on, that all of these things, where a burden to success.

It seems that the majority of the population do not want to try to put in a 12 or 18 hour day during the weekends, studying.

  9. Yes more people work for low wages at Wal-Mart. .

But there is never any mention about any of the vice industries taking away from time management or lowering the standards for opertunitites.

I come from a blue collar family who drank, smoked, and watched pornography as well.

However, now that I am much older, I had befriended more successful people in the community. People whom have become doctors or obtained masters degrees in advanced studies and make a lavish living.

1 correlation between this opportunity to be successful in the USA compared to the Wal-Mart workers; is in their household all of these vices where absent.

Why is it Ok for Budweiser to market alcohol to someone's father who will prevent them from becoming educated, and taking advantage of American opportunity.

The far left doesn't think about these things. They are often times not motivated enough or disciplined enough to recognize these distractions. Non of the protesters on occupy wall street have ever said,

" Leave our community "Budweiser distributors", you are distracting us from gaining higher opportunity, we can not work or study up to 18 hours a day with you lowering the moral of the community standards".

The latter believe, it feels good and doesn't hurt anyone, so they must not be greedy corporations. At least that is how I interpret it.

  10. I wanted to mention that I had noticed that many of the organizations or people whom are lobbying for big change in the USA or the world whom find fault with places like

Wall Street or Wal-Mart never, mention the "Vice Industries"

I had read online that the #1 site online for pornography is worth 56 million dollars

But why is it considered ok for "vice" industries such as Casinos, Alcohol or Pornography to make large amounts of profit selling products who's blue prints are strictly designed to degrade family life not held at the same pedestal of socialist criticism ss McDonalds.

The way I understand it is: Wal-Mart , McDonalds, & Wall Street are Evil,

Pornography industry: Gambling, and in the future , the legalization of marijuana industries. are Not Evil

    Has anyone else noticed this?

The average pot dealer or liquor store owner operating in a community has done more to damage the quality of life, for an American citizen to interfere with opportunity then what McDonald's minimum wage jobs will ever do.

Something is wrong with the motivation in a society as a whole. When the libraries close at 5pm, and the bars close at 2am

  11. Yes, it's true. No frats or sororities at BYU. The only Greeks at BYU are the European kind.

As for BYU being "all business": Not really. I'm sure it's become much more competitive than since I was there in the '80s, but there is so much to do at BYU socially and otherwise that it's really a very well-rounded experience for anyone who actually WANTS a well-rounded experience.

Do you know if its true, that BYU has the highest Muslim population due to the honor code?

I think it is beyond ridiculous that state universities preach "Integrity" then at the same time, allow alcohol on campus. I think school should be where you go to put your 8 or 16 hours in a day and nothing more. Other then religious organizations, I don't see the justifications of any other activities.

  12. If Bobba Fett gets his own movie, like it is speculated it might only appeal to the hard core audiences. But considering the size of the hard core star wars audience its still super large.

Just as long as they do not destroy the character's Mandalorian roots, since mandalorins are Jedi Killers and just bad ( you know what) all the way around.

I love watching the fan films on YouTube, some of the European ones look like they have a substantial budget behind them. Check out " Way of the Shadow" has CGI and everything.

    Cheers!

  13. Greetings,

I just wanted to ask if the LDS faith, recognizes the early church martyrs,

such as St. Sebastian, or St. Justin. As Saints, in the kingdom of heaven.

Also I had been interested in some time, about making short films about the martyrdom of St Sebastian and St. Justin.

My favorite Saint, being Sebastian, who was martyred twice. Is this recognized by the LDS church ?

    Cheers!

  14. I'll answer for KountC and he can add to it when he gets back on here.

Sacrament in Catholic parlance are specific ordinances in one's life in which the power and grace of God is made manifest to His children.

There are 7 Sacraments recognized by the Catholic Church:

    1.) Baptism

    2.) Reconciliation

    3.) Holy Eucharist

    4.) Confirmation

    5.) Holy Matrimony

    6.) Holy Orders

    7.) Anointing of the Sick

A Catholic in the normal circumstance can only avail of 6 because Holy Matrimony and Holy Orders are mutually exclusive. All of these Sacraments are of equal importance in the life of a Catholic.

The Sacraments don't need to be received in this specific order (this is the order I received it - I received the first 4) but some sacraments by its nature require other sacraments first.

Baptism, for example, has to be the very first Sacrament. This is one's acceptance and commitment to accept Jesus Christ as one's Savior and to commit to following a Christian life. Most Catholics are baptized as infants or toddlers. In this case, the parents/guardians and godparents accept and commit to raising and teaching the child to follow a Christian life. Through this Sacrament all others are possible.

Reconciliation is one's act to turn away from sin and reconcile with God. Because of the nature of this Sacrament, one needs to be at the age of reason (around 8 years old or 3rd grade in Catholic School regardless of age) to be able to receive this Sacrament. One must, by his own choice, recognize the sin, confess the sin, and be penitent.

Holy Eucharist is receiving the Body and Blood of Christ as a physical sign of His Atonement. Because of the nature of this sacrament, one must be at the age of reason to receive this Sacrament. And because one must be clean to partake of this Sacrament, then one must have gone through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Confirmation is when one receives the gift of the Holy Ghost and is a deeper commitment to the Christian life. Those baptized as infants must now take on their commitments separate from their parents/godparents therefore it also requires the age of reason. Some people get confirmed before they partake of the Holy Eucharist or even Reconciliation. Although, if going to a Catholic School, Confirmation is given after 3rd grade so it occurs after.

Holy Matrimony requires Baptism, Reconciliation, and Holy Eucharist as the Eucharist is given to the married couple during the ordinance of Matrimony.

Holy Orders requires the first 4. This is where one gets ordained as a priest or a nun.

Anointing of the Sick is also called Last Rites. It's basically a blessing to prepare one's self spiritually, mentally, and physically for the after life.

This should at least have scratched the surface a bit.

I'm sorry to have ignored , you all on this sacrement question. Its that I've been loaded down with homework. ITs 230 am now, I have to study at night, when there is no noise. I'll join you guys this weekend, or maybe later this week

    Cheers!

  15. You know, after 30 credit hours, you can apply to transfer to BYU. If you have straight As or close to it, that may well get you in (as long as you have ecclesiastical endorsement).

BYU is a very different atmosphere. I loved it. It changed my life. But it is not for everyone.

LOL!!!! I have made 1 A in a university and a couple A's in community college.

I wouldn't have the transcripts for BYU friend.

I often times will study for 7/10's and get D's I've been working on my undergraduates degree for nearly 10 years. Its been so long that I don't even think this is what I want to do now. I'm suppose to call a doctor this week about ADHD testing since we are talking academics. Which is something I should have done 5 years ago; but I was to naive to think that my work ethic was efficient enough. Soon I will be dropping a class, for Matlab because I have missed one assignment and I will be yet again, taking only 2 classes, studying 8-10 hours a day while not working. It is very proficient.

But BYU Idaho was my #1 Choice school.
