  1. I used to enjoy Time Out for Women, put on by Deseret Book, until I became more and more aware of and concerned by the commercial aspect of this supposedly uplifting event. Don't get me wrong, it is uplifting, but I personally have a hard time with where that line is when we commercialize otherwise sacred things. I kind of agree with The Folk Prophet on this one.
  2. While I've never thought about this in terms of physical or spiritual, I've always kind of thought of this concept of yin and yang when I read 2 Nephi 2:11: "For it must needs be that there is an opposition in all things. If not so ... righteousness could not be brought to pass, neither wickedness (etc.) ... Wherefore, all things must needs be a compound in one..." And then I have that cross-referenced to Alma 42:16, "Now, repentance could not come unto men except there were a punishment, which also was eternal as the life of the soul should be, affixed opposite to the plan of happiness, which was as eternal also as the life of the soul." This concept of opposites really being a compound in one and punishment being affixed eternally opposite to the plan of happiness has always resonated with me, and again, I kind of think of it when I think of yin/yang. Worldly/cultural understanding of an eternal concept. Sorry if this isn't clear - too many things going on here demanding my attention!
  3. I have gone to TOFW a number of times and generally leave feeling very uplifted, particularly by the music. That said, there is a commercialization of the gospel aspect to it that bothers me, and I have yet to resolve that in my mind. This last year I actually worked as a cashier at the one in the Cincinnati area, and the amount of money changing hands is mind boggling. On the other hand, the attendees do seem to get a lot out of it. That said, I haven't met anyone else who is bothered by it!
  4. Hi, I'm Kerrie. I've been lurking for a long time but decided to register so I could occasionally comment on things. I'm not online consistently enough to be a super-regular poster - no time! - but will be here from time to time. I'm a lifetime member of the Church from the west coast. Moved east of the Mississippi nearly 20 years ago (when did I get that old?!) and live in a small ward here. Actually, it's a pretty big ward; we just have an abysmally low activity rate. I'm married and have 4 kids ranging in age from 22 to 13. My oldest has a 4-month-old son now (and a wife), so our family continues to grow. My 19-year-old daughter has Down syndrome, so we have the near guarantee of never completely being empty-nesters. Good to meet all y'all! :)
