  1. Hi Traveler

I understand that Elder Richard Maynes was closely involved in a business that specialised in industrial automation and I know that's where you spent most of your working life. Are you related to him?

Not that I know.  My father had 13 siblings and my mother had 8.  I have over 100 first cousins and there are now two additional generations - in some cases 3 generations.  Going  back to my great grand parents and their parents and I have a lot of relatives.   I have two brothers also involved in industrial automation - one has a photographic memory.  I will check with him and get back with you.

  4. Re: pens

    Hi Zil

One of the pillars of our stake is a super pen geek. He's in his 80's now and takes about 14 pills a day to stay alive, but he still turns out a lot of hand made pens every year. He's a true craftsman, not just a hobbyist and works to very high standards. I'm not sure if he does fountain pens. He's fascinated with exotic woods which he sources from all over the world, such as from long ago sunken ships, or rare trees, or wood that has been recycled from historic artifacts like hand carts and famous pieces of furniture. He then uses a lathe to turn the wood into pens, most of which he gives away to people all over the world. Most of them time when he shares his testimony, there will be at least a few references to pens or wood. He's not interested in making money from selling them, he just loves making pens. You can see a sample of the kind of wood he uses at  .http://www.penturners.org/forum/f13/conkerberry-peter-elegant-sierra-78218/  Peter didn't make this pen, but he provided the wood from which it was made.

Nice.  I love watching lathe-work.  No idea why, just love it.  I watched a YouTube video not that long ago of a guy turning a pen from wood recovered from a sailing ship that had sunk long, long ago - it was cool.

Most turners buy fountain pen kits (same as ballpoint or roller ball kits) and turn the body of the pen to match the kit.  I actually have one of those turned by one of my dad's friends.  The acrylic is beautiful, but I don't really like the pen itself - too heavy and the grip section is too thin and slippery (chrome or something).  So it sits there and looks pretty. :)

  5. Hello Zil, you seem to have been unusually quite lately. Is all well?

Yes, @askandanswer, all is well.  I had to go away for a while, but I'm back - though I probably won't post as much as I was.  Thank you for checking on me, I sincerely appreciate it.

  6. Well done Mirkwood, this is a job that needed doing.gingerbread man.jpg

But it looks like one got away Pam.gif

If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing well. So please, finish the job and make sure there are no left overs.

      That is so cruel. :P

  7. Loved your post to Repeat's request for help. I really hope he follows your advice.

  8. Sorry Pam, I couldn't resist ;)

  9. Pam yesterday at 2:35 pm: I would love to go on one of those Viking River cruises

Would you be thinking of coming back?

I would love for you to go on a Viking River cruise – or on a one way trek to the north pole; or for a swim in Shark Bay; or any other place, as long as its far far away.

If you're concerned about the cost you could try the DIY version, it involves hiring a canoe. The canoe could also eliminate the need for a plane if you have strong arms and a bit of spare time.

  10. Hello Catlick, its a pleasant surprise to see you back here again, I had occasionally wondered about you. I see you asked your question back on August 6, but I mainly look in the gospel questions forum and don't often look in the forum where you posted your question so I didn't realise you were back until just the other day. I'm not sure if you remember me; you and I exchanged a few messages a few years ago. I recall I spoke with you somewhat boldly about coffee I think? Or maybe it was about being indecisive, I'm not quite sure.

Two years and still investigating? hmmm. I'm not making and judgements here, everybody works at their own pace, and I'm pretty good at procrastinating and being slothful and its definitely not as easy when you are doing it on your own without your partner. Let me remind you of 1 Kings 18:8

    (Old Testament | 1 Kings 18:21)
21  And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions?  if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.  And the people answered him not a word.
I encourage you to reflect on this verse and hope that you will be kind enough to share your reflections.

Once more, its nice to see you again

Thank you for your message! I haven't logged on to this forum in weeks (kids started a new school year--so busy!). I so appreciate your advice--and yes, 2 years is a long time to be stuck. I do remember our conversations about coffee--and I still struggle with that, as I love coffee. Even if I could just switch to decaf--but alas, not an option. I will highlight the 1 Kings scripture and ponder it. It speaks directly to my indecision and my mulish stance at this point. I really do need to act on what God has whispered to me. Thank you so very much.

  11. I seem to recall that about January or February last year, some one you had a newly emerging interest in went on a mission. I guess she is back by now. I'm a little bit curious about what has happened to your interest.....

Nothing really.  She's not interested now, and after 18 months I'm not really inclined to try to get her interested again.
